Aki Izayoi (十六夜 アキ, Izayoi Aki) is a powerful duelist who has the power materialize Duel Monsters into real creatures. This has led her to be known as a masked criminal called the Black Rose Witch. Aki, who is discovered to be a Signer, possesses a Dragon Birthmark and one of the Five Dragons, Black Rose Dragon. Suffering much anguish in return for her incredible powers, she is taken under the wing of a man named Divine, working for the Arcadia Movement - an organization of psychic duelists like herself.

[edit] Personality
Aki is a cold and seemingly sadistic duelist. She appears to be numb to the discrimination against her. Surprisingly, she feels nothing for her opponents despite knowing that the pain is horrible. Her personality is inspired by her past, which is full of rejection and anger.

Aki has pink hair which is rolled in the middle with some sort of hair clip or pin-like object. She has unusual, brown eyes which resemble those of a cat's. Her skin is pale.
Her wardrobe is inspired through military and Victorian influences; black gloves and stockings which seem to be connected to her undergarments by garter belts. The tail of her trenchcoat nearly reaches the ground and has a slit in the middle. The whole piece places emphasis on her upper torso, tightening at her waist and is extremely loose everywhere else.

In her youth, Aki caused accidents while dueling, often resulting in people's injury. Aki then later attended a Duel Academia as a young teenager, where she inadvertently caused more destruction due to the instability of her special powers. Because of these incidents, she became separated from most people and isolated herself, thus taking on the persona of the "Black Rose Witch".
Aki is later found by Divine, a mysterious looking red-haired man who claims to have powers of his own similar to Aki's. He displays a profound interest in her powers. Rua and Tenpei later decide to challenge the Black Rose Witch to a duel. It is during this encounter that Aki first sees Yusei Fudo and his Dragon Birthmark. She expressed surprise and hatred to the fact that there are other individuals who also possess such a mark. She notes it as a "wretched mark" and teleports away.
[edit] Fortune Cup
Like Yusei, Aki is a participant in the Fortune Cup tournament and faces Jill deLauncebeaux as her opponent for the first round. During the duel Aki proves her power to be true by making damages on Jill reality. She wins the Duel using her signature monster, Black Rose Dragon. By using that monster however, it helped reveal her as the infamous Black Rose Witch to the audience. Rex Godwin and Jeager wanted Jill to expose her as a Signer, however even with her using her powers, Akutsu's D-Sensor didn't receive a reading.
Aki's next opponent in the Fortune Cup for round two was the Duel Profiler, Kodo Kinomiya, a mysterious man who attempted to confuse and manipulate her with tragic insights from her dark, lonely past. Rex and Jeager are hopeful that this strategy will finally confirm Aki's existence as a Signer. After being pushed to her psychological limit by Kodo, Aki loses control and becomes even more unstable than usual, revealing her Dragon Birthmark. An intense aura appears around Aki making her hair-pin fall out, spreading her hair over her face. From watching her duel, Yusei senses that she was full of anger and rejection.
Aki is then claimed victorious against Kodo, and moves on to the Fortune Cup finals, in which she faces Yusei. Before the Duel, Yanagi Tenzen realizes how most of the spectators watching are now rooting for Yusei, despite their original dislike and mistrust of him when they saw his criminal mark in the start of the tournament - he continues to add that the crowd is thirsty for blood, and that they want to see Aki suffer. When the duel rages on several of the spectators closest to the Duel flee and duck for cover after Aki's assault on Yusei becomes a reality.
After her first crippling attack against Yusei, he realizes Aki's third emotion, that she finds pleasure and joy in the destruction she causes to others. With a slightly insane smile, Aki gasps for breath; replying that she is the "Black Rose Witch", a fearful lady who finds pleasure in inflicting pain to others. However, she wears this sadistic mask to hide her loneliness. Yusei then tries to break Aki free from her dark half by claiming she doesn't really want to hurt people.
Once she lost to Yusei, tears rained down her cheeks as she uttered the words "Help me.", before Yusei can say anything, the audience breaks out into mean slurs. Before long Divine took her away, saying she did well.
[edit] Post Fortune Cup
After the Fortune Cup, Divine makes note that her powers are weakening, most likely because she was thinking of Yusei's words during their Fortune Cup duel. Divine tells her to not expect Yusei to come and save her, and that she can only rely on herself.
One night, as she searches for Divine in the Arcadia Movement building, she encounters Misty, and the two engage in a Shadow Duel. During the Duel, Misty accuses her of killing her younger brother and seeks revenge. Aki protests against her accusation. Misty manages to summon her Earthbound God, but before she could order an attack, Carly (who was turned into a Dark Signer) finishes her Duel with Divine, causing enough damage to the building to send Divine fall several stories of the Arcadia Movement building. Aki sees his fall and cries in despair as she watches him plummet to the ground.Moments before the building collapses, Jack Atlas finds her unconscious on the floor. But it is too late, as she has gone into a coma and is taken to the local hospital.
While Aki was hospitalized, her parents come to visit hers and feel guilt for how they treated her. Jack tells them that Yusei may be able to save their daughter. When Yusei arrives to see Aki, their respective birthmarks throb, which wakes her up. However, recalling the events that happened prior her losing her conscious, Aki refuses his help and plans to destroy the world, because for her, a world without Divine is not a world worth living in. Yusei duels her, believing it to be the only way to reach out to her. As the duel progresses, Aki's powers go beyond her control, eventually her father stands in front of Yusei to protect him. He then tells her that he and her mother always loved her, and that they no longer fear her or her powers. Realizing that she has a place to belong to with her parents, she manages to gain control of her powers, protecting her father. She comes to forgive her parents, more so of her father and tells Yusei to end the Duel.
Afterwards, she becomes friends with Yusei and agrees to join the other Signers. Mikage, knowing that Aki was part of the Arcadia Movement, decides to show her the results of her investigation on the group. Aki is shocked to learn that the group often kidnapped children, and experimented on them, to check their psychic duelist potential, if any. Aki then thinks that Divine may be involved in the possible disappearance of Misty's brother. Mikage also reveals to her Divine´s true motives and plans involving the choosing of some selected psychic individuals with heightened abilities and the use of this as soldiers, with Aki being one of them. Despite this, she was fine with the plans Divine had in mind, as long as she was accepted by him.

Shortly after, she, along with the rest of the Signers, accepts an invitation from Rex Godwin to his residence. She shows some hesitation, as she recalls how Rex forced Yusei to participate in the Fortune Cup. There, the Signers learn more of the legend of the Crimson Dragon, as well as the Dark Signers. Rex also tells Aki that her powers aren't a curse, but more of a gift, and that without them, she would have never the other Signers. After realizing her duty as a Signer, she joins Yusei and the others to Satellite, to face their destined battled against the Dark Signers. Shortly after arriving to Satellite, Rudger appears and challenges Yusei to a duel. She decides to join him and watch the duel, Afterwards, the Signers then learn of the 4 towers that serve as controllers to the Old Momentum, the 4 cards of the Signers being the keys. The Signers decide to split up, with each Signer going to a different tower.
Aki goes to the fourth tower to duel Misty, accompanied by Mikage. Once they arrive at the destination, they're surprised to see a an old, abandoned KC carnival. Aki finds Misty in the House of Mirrors, and is trapped there.
As their duel continues, Misty tells the tale of Toby's death that was caused by her through the use of her Sad Story Spells. Aki learns that long ago, Toby was a Black Rose Witch fan, following her to the Arcadia Movement, matching her hairstyle and even going over to watch her duel at the Daimon Area, where her powers destroyed buildings, the debris landing on Toby and killing him instantly. Misty´s Bad End trap card showed to Aki that news of Toby's death caused Misty to have an accident, hospitalizing her. Not wanting to die without avenging Toby's death, she was reborn as a Dark Signer.
Aki, unable to handle the pressure of having murdered someone, loses the will to continue the duel. Divine awakens her powers as the Black Rose once again. Misty summons her powerful Bad End Queen Dragon, inflicting more damage to her. Aki remains unaffected and snickers after the attack. As her other sinister persona in the end has found a way to unleash Black Rose Dragon, and ultimately its destructive appearance in combination with her psychic powers has shattered every mirror in the vicinity. The two of them finally confront face to face.
[edit] Duel Monsters
She has defeated her first two matches in the series; one against Jill de Lancebow and another against Kodo Kinomiya. She lost against Yusei Fudo during the Fortune Cup Finals and a second lose to Yusei Fudo in the hospital where she was confined to.
Her deck is a black rose themed deck. It focuses mainly on summoning her ace card the Black Rose Dragon. She also has some cards to cause effect damage such as "Rose Flame" and so on.
