Anzu Mazaki (真崎 杏子 Mazaki Anzu) is Yugi Mutou’s childhood friend. Cheerful and optimistic by nature, she is always willing to offer support or lend a helping hand. Anzu rarely, if ever, takes part in the games Yugi and Katsuya Jonouchi play. Instead, she aspires to raise enough money to study dancing in America, to which end she takes up various part-time jobs that often seem to get her into trouble. It is through one of those troublesome jobs that she first encounters Dark Yugi and develops an infatuation for him, something that would become a defining point of her character for the rest of the story.

[edit] Personality

Anzu is level-headed and pragmatic, often acting as the voice of reason in the group, along with Hiroto Honda. She is vigorous, supportive and hardly ever in low spirits, though her unrequited crush on Dark Yugi often presents a source of some confusion and even heartache.

Like Yugi and Jonouchi, Anzu possesses a competitive nature in her own field of expertise – dancing – which is perhaps why she is so understanding of their ambitions as duelists. Still, when she feels the games they play are ultimately more trouble than they are worth, she is not afraid to speak her mind and confront them about it.

[edit] Early Manga

Anzu in Vol. 4 of the manga

In the manga, Anzu is introduced as a hardy, but kindhearted girl who acts as something of a protector to Yugi, swiftly putting an end to Honda and Jonouchi's bullying attempts. During her time as a part-time waitress in Burger World, Anzu finds herself a hostage of an escaped criminal, who in turn falls victim to one of Dark Yugi’s Games of Darkness. Being blindfolded at the time, she only hears the voice of the person who rescued her and becomes obsessed with meeting him.

In Volume 3, Anzu is again taken hostage, this time by the mysterious Egyptian Shadi who wagers her life against the outcome of a Game of Darkness he forces upon Dark Yugi. After Yugi wins the game, he aids Jonouchi in rescuing her, and it is the first time Anzu catches a glimpse of the “other” Yugi’s face.

Anzu’s disastrous Burger World career ends when she punches a customer for making inappropriate advances at her, and she starts working for Kaiba Corporation as a guide for the first attraction of the Death-T theme park. However, upon Yugi, Jonouchi and Honda’s entrance, and their revealing of the true purpose behind Death-T, she promptly quits her new job and goes on to face the rest of the attractions along with her friends.

In Volume 6, Anzu ends up in yet another hostage situation when her attempt to bring out Dark Yugi by seemingly putting herself in danger backfires. Again, Dark Yugi rescues her and she insists on continuing the date she started with Yugi, causing the spirit of the puzzle to blush.

In Volume 7, Anzu, along with her friends, quite literally becomes a token in an RPG Game of Darkness Dark Bakura orchestrates.
