Austin O'Brien (オースチン・オブライエン, Ōsuchin Oburaien) is one of the four exchange students who arrives at Duel Academia. Austin runs a fire deck and is very loyal to those he trusts. He is a strong soldier whose lessons come mostly from the army and his own father.

Austin arrived at the academy from South Academy along with Professor Cobra. He is shown to be always on his guard and often trains himself by hanging upside down. His first duel occurs between him and Judai Yuki. Professor Cobra had asked him to drain Judai's energy and by using Sho Marufuji as bait, Austin lured Judai into a duel. As the duel progressed, Austin drove Judai into a corner while continuously threatening him with cutting the rope that held Sho. Tyranno Kenzan and Johan Andersen eventually save Sho, letting Judai be able to duel Austin will all of this ability. Austin is revealed to have let Judai win in the end to give enough duel energy to Professor Cobra. After the duel, both Austin and Judai fall down due to weakness and the drainage of duel energy. Austin immediately senses something wrong and due to his strong body, he is able to recover from the lack of energy and he goes to Cobra's hideout to seek for answers.
He arrives at Cobra's hideout a few episodes later, however, Cobra had already foreseen his visit and thus was able to trap him in a little room. Austin eventually finds a way to get out of the room by drilling at the brick underneath him, but to his surprise, there was a huge gap between the floor that he was on and the floor down below.

Austin appears during a phone conversation with Judai. He is later revealed to be in Domino City trying to investigate activity there. One day, everyone disappears from the town, and Austin tries to find the source of the disappearance. Mr. T comes out and challenges Austin to a duel. Austin is reminded of his childhood in the duel and finally loses to Mr. T. He is then controlled by Mr. T and multiplied. The controlled Austin visits his parents and erases his existence from their memories.
