Hiroto Honda (本田 ヒロト Honda Hiroto) is a longtime friend of Katsuya Jonouchi. He also befriends Yugi Mutou and Anzu Mazaki. Unlike his friends, Honda is not greatly interested in games and tends to be more practical. His personality in Toei Animation's Yu-Gi-Oh! is quite different: he is head of the Beautification Committee at Domino High School and is obsessed with two things: cleanliness, and Miho Nosaka, whom he blindly loves.

[edit] Personality
Honda is a cruel bully when he first appears, but he quickly turns into a more level-headed character thanks to the influence of Yugi. He and Jonouchi are friends with an intensely strong bond, and will often fight together. Honda usually has a fairly calm demeanor, but this will often break down when his friends are in trouble.
Honda is skilled with model guns, and owns an air rifle. He claims that when he was younger he could hit a ¥100 piece from 50 feet away. He is not talented at the games his friends play, but he is usually content to watch Yugi and Jonouchi play Duel Monsters (Magic and Wizards in the original Japanese manga). As a spectator, Honda amuses himself by poking fun at Jonouchi's attempts at dramatic statements during duels. In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, Honda also knows how to ride a motorcycle and uses the motorcycle that he has borrowed from his senpai.
In Toei Animation's Yu-Gi-Oh!, Honda is a great friend of Jonouchi but also likes to antagonize him (and is in turn antagonized by Jonouchi). As the head of the Domino High School Beautification Committee Honda sees it as his duty to keep the world clean, and despises such acts as littering. He also has a fanatical devotion to Miho Nosaka. In this series Miho is shallow and air-headed, and Honda's love is not deeply reciprocated. Their relationship seems to consist of Honda going to extreme and painful lengths to please Miho, who seems to have little loyalty to Honda at all (she falls for Ryo Bakura as soon as he is introduced). In the manga, Miho only appears in chapter 7 and has a much quieter personality: she is the student librarian often known as 'Ribbon' due to the ribbon in her hair.
Later on in the manga and in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, Honda instead has a crush on Jonouchi's sister Shizuka Kawai. It is Honda who takes it upon himself to bring back Shizuka to Domino from the hospital where she was having an important eye operation. He is forced to compete for her affections with Ryuji Otogi, but Shizuka seems oblivious to either of their interests in her.
[edit] Biography
[edit] First Appearance
When Honda is introduced in the first chapter of the manga, he and Jonouchi are unpleasant characters who bully Yugi. When Ushio the hall monitor inflicts his unrequested bodyguard services onto the two, Yugi tries to defend them, saying that they were only trying to make him into a man. For this, Ushio attacks Yugi. From that day on, Jonouchi becomes friends with Yugi, but Honda takes slightly longer. In Duel 7, Honda asks Jonouchi for help in winning the heart of Miho. Jonouchi brings Yugi in on the plan, and although Yugi's idea to use a message hidden in a puzzle fails to make Miho fall in love with Honda, Honda softens towards Yugi from then on.
[edit] Duel Monsters / Magic and Wizards
In the manga, Honda does not play Duel Monsters but simply enjoys watching Yugi and Jonouchi play. In the anime he has a deck and his favorite card is Commander (Cyber Commander). Despite this, he is not particularly talented at the game. The deck he constructed on the spot in the Virtual World consisted of militaristic machines and soldiers.
Despite his lack of talent he told Shizuka that he taught Jonouchi how to play the game; this lie was revealed when he could not hold his own in a duel against Big 4 (of the Big 5) in the Virtual World, with his real-life body as the ante. Despite having Ryuji Otogi and Shizuka on his side, Big 4 held the upper hand until Honda sacrificed himself to protect Shizuka. Before he lost his body, he admitted to Shizuka that he did not teach Jonouchi the game.
