Insector Haga (インセクター羽蛾 Insekutā Haga) is the Japanese champion at Duel Monsters (Magic and Wizards in the original manga), hailing from East Japan. He is a cunning trickster who has no qualms about cheating or misconduct in or around his duels. Despite this, he is actually a very talented duelist who plays with a deck of Insect cards.

[edit] Personality

'Insector' Haga has an amazing love of insects, which explains his Duel Monsters deck full of bugs. He will go to any length to rig a Duel Monsters match in his advantage, before the duel has even begun. He famously throws Yugi Mutou's Exodia cards into the ocean on the way to Duelist Kingdom and has a crony insert a Parasite Paracide into Katsuya Jonouchi's deck during Battle City, giving his own Insect cards a crippling advantage. Despite these great lengths, his cheating rarely works out.

Even though Haga is best known for finding ways to defeat his opponents unfairly, he is actually a powerful duelist. Whether it was through cheating or not, he gained the title of Japanese Duel Monsters champion. This title is rendered meaningless when he is the first duelist to be eliminated from Duelist Kingdom, and as news of his defeats spread his reputation is ruined. In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Haga and his squabbling partner Dinosaur Ryuzaki squander their fame as champions and grow to hate the ones who defeated them in the first place: in Haga's case, Yugi Mutou. In his state of weakness it is easy for the mysterious Doma Organisation to convince him to join their ranks.

[edit] Duelist Kingdom

After defeating Dinosaur Ryuzaki in the Japanese National Duel Monsters Tournament, Haga is invited by Pegasus J. Crawford to the Duelist Kingdom tournament sponsored by Industrial Illusions. Haga meats Yugi on the boat to Duelist Kingdom, and manages to persuade him to show him the Exodia cards. When Yugi hands them over, Haga promptly throws them into the sea.

Seeing revenge, Yugi challenges Haga to the first duel of the tournament. Haga leads Yugi into the forest area, where his Insects have a Field Power Source advantage. Knowing this, Yugi takes the bait and they begin the duel. Haga's first assault lines up some of his most powerful Insects for an all-out attack, led by Basic Insect equipped with Insect Armor with Laser cannon. Yugi's Holy Barrier - Mirror Force destroys all of Haga's bugs at once, and he is forced to rethink his strategy.

With his forces severely weakened, Haga sends out his Larvae Moth equipped with Cocoon of Evolution. He plans to bring out Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth, but Yugi destroys his Cocoon earlier than he expected, brining out instead the weaker Great Moth. Great Moth is still very powerful, and Yugi has trouble taking it down until he uses Makiu to treat the bug as a giant lightning rod for Demon Summon, defeating both it and Haga. Haga is eliminated from the tournament twenty minutes into dueling, the first duelist to lose. He is last seen rowing away from the island along with other eliminated duelists.

[edit] Battle City

Insector Haga prides himself on being an unbearable creep

During the Battle City tournament, Haga sets his sights on revenge against Yugi, starting with Jonouchi first. He bribes a boy to steal Jonouchi's Duel Disk with the promise of a rare card, and tells the boy to place a Parasite Paracide card in Jonouchi's deck. The boy does this, and although Jonouchi gets his Duel Disk back he doesn't realize that the Parasite cards are in his deck. Afterwards, the boy explains that his own deck and Duel Disk were stolen, and Jonouchi gallantly promises to defeat the culprit. The boy goes to Haga to tell him that the plan went perfectly and Haga repays him by spraying him in the eyes with bug killer (in the anime, it's web foam instead).

Haga meets Jonouchi at the town square and their duel begins, with a wager of two Puzzle Cards and one rare card. The loser will be eliminated from the tournament. Quickly Jonouchi draws the Parasite that the boy snuck into his deck and all of his monsters are turned into Insects. This puts him at a huge disadvantage against Haga's Insect Barrier. Haga summons forth his greatest monster, Insect Queen, which gains power for every Insect on the field. Jonouchi manages to win through a combination of Gearfried the Iron Knight, whose iron body is immune to Parasite Paracide's effects, and the Graverobber card, which copies the effect of Haga's Insecticide. Jonouchi uses the grave-robbed Insecticide to kill Insect Queen, leaving Haga defenseless. He is once again defeated and knocked out of the tournament, losing his rare Insect Queen to Jonouchi due to the ante rule.

In the anime, Haga also manages to summon for the first time Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth, although Jonouchi defeats it with the Angel's Dice and Devil's Dice cards.

[edit] Duel Monsters / Magic and Wizards

Haga uses nothing other than the Insect monsters which appeal to him. He plays using Traps and tricks, his original strategy being the summoning of the Great Moth, or even the Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth. He also focus on a tactic to infect his opponent's deck with the Parasite Paracide bug before the match, which turns all his opponent's monsters into Insects. This means he can stop his opponent from attacking altogether with Insect Barrier and turn them into easy prey for his hungry Insect Queen.
