Johan Andersen (ヨハン・アンデルセン Yohan Anderusen) is a student from North Academy who comes to Duel Academia as an exchange student. Johan owns a duel spirit, named Ruby, who he carries around quite frequently. Johan is shown to be very close to his cards, even calling them his family. During a duel between Johan, Judai Yuki, and Martin Kanou, Johan sacrifices himself to bring Duel Academy back to where it belonged. As a result, Johan is sent to another dimension and did not return back with the others.

Showing up slightly past the series half-way point, Johan is introduced in the very first episode of season three. He first appears on the rooftop of Duel Academia, following after his duel spirit Ruby Carbuncle. It's at this point that he first meets with Judai, and the two seem to gain an immediate friendship. Although unknown to Judai at that point, Johan is one of the champion transfer students to show up at the school, along with Austin O'Brien, Jim Crocodile Cook, and Amon Garam. Duel Academia held an Introdution Ceremony later that day, to announce to the news of the new students to the school, but Johan showed up late, and was thrown into a duel shortly after arriving. With Judai as his opponent, and with almost the entire school watching, Johan was able to introduce his Gem Beast deck. It proved to be powerful enough, but had one very noticable flaw, that he quickly brought everyone's attention. He didn't have Rainbow Dragon. The duel ended with him wiping out his own lifepoints, after a bluff summoning of the non-exsistant Rainbow Dragon card. After the duel, he tells the students why he has yet to own it, and to help him out if any of them ever got any clues on it.
