Judai Yuki (遊城十代 Yūki Jūdai) is a carefree student at Duel Academia who has the ability to see Duel Spirits. He is a natural duelist and incredibly talented. He scores low in tests, because his real ability is only revealed in the heat of the duel. Other students find Judai's carefree attitude either fascinating, or frustrating.

In the beginning, Judai is a happy-go-lucky, carefree sort of person. He duels for enjoyment. His personality is very cheerful, and he never gives up. After the incident with Yubel, and once he returns crashing to the Earth looking like a meteor, he is darker and more serious.

Judai Yuki was a student attending the dueling school, Duel Academia. Upon being late for his entrance exam, he bumps into Yugi Mutou, who gives him the card "Hane Kuriboh." After defeating Cronos de Medici, he enters as an Osiris Red student. Over the course of his attendance at the academy, several odd events happen.

Yubel was originally a friend of Haou Judai, the Supreme King. However, she became a dragon in order to protect him while he matured. Judai as the Supreme King in his former life vowed to love her, and her only. Afterwards, in Judai's current life, he gets Yubel's card as a young child. She becomes his favorite card, but Yubel is sent into space, after causing strange incidents whenever Judai dueled anyone with Yubel in his deck. After Judai has recurring nightmares of her, his memory is erased.

During her stay in space, Yubel is corrupted by the Light of Destruction. Upon re-entering the atmosphere, she is almost destroyed, with only her arm remaining after the landing. During the third season, Cobra tries to resurrect Yubel; believing that Yubel will return to him his dead son. After Judai defeats Cobra, Yubel kills him ("reuniting" him with his son) and sends all of Duel Academia into an alternate dimension. She takes possession of Martin, and starts turning the students into "Duel Zombies". She finally reveals her real form while dueling Judai and Johan. When Duel Academia is finally returned to the real world thanks to Johan's monster, Rainbow Dragon, Johan gets left behind. Judai and his friends then attempt to return to rescue Johan.

Once they arrive in a different dimension, the Dark World, they discover that duels are deadly; whoever loses the duel dies. This leads to Judai trying to take one every single opponent they meet, to protect his friends. Eventually, during his duel with Brron, Mad King of the Dark World, Asuka, Fubuki, Manjoume and Kenzan get killed off. This leads to Judai's hidden side, Haou, to emerge.

In the following episodes, Judai becomes the ruler of the Dark World, commiting genocide to complete the Super Fusion card that Brron left behind. Jim tries to bring him back using his Eye of Orichalchos, but fails, and eventually O'Brien has to duel Judai. He succeeds in stopping Haou, but pays for it with his life. As Judai is despairing over the atrocities he comitted as Haou, he witnesses Amon summon Exodia by sacrificing Ekou. Edo tries to stop the sacrifice, but gets defeated by Exodia and dies. To top it off, Johan reappears, now possessed by Yubel. In the following duel, Hell Kaiser dies, fulfilling his dream of having his last duel against a worthy opponent.

In the next duel, Judai finally takes on Yubel/Johan and discovers that Johan's soul is trapped within Rainbow Dark Dragon. By using Super Fusion to fuse together Elemental Hero Neos and Rainbow Dark Dragon, he frees Johan's soul. The duel ends in a tie, but Yubel acquires Super Fusion.

Finally, in the last duel between Yubel and Judai, Judai discovers his and Yubel's past, and finds out that he is Haou, the Herald of Gentle Darkness. He also remembers how Yubel sacrificed herself for him, and how he promised to love only her. He stops Yubel from using Super Fusion to destroy all twelve dimensions, and instead fuses together their souls, thereby also ridding Yubel of the influence of the Light of Destruction. After fusing himself with Yubel and returning, Judai's design changes, and he is shown sometimes with glowing "Yubel" eyes.

Judai demonstrates his badassery with his newly acquired powers.

After the incidents involving the Light of Destruction, the demons, and Yubel, Duel Academia is once again about to undergo a major event. It begins with tainted cards that don't show up on the field after being placed into the Duel Disk. There is also a mysterious student called Fujiwara Yusuke who seems to be able to hypnotize students. Afterwards, the Fujiwara who showed up turned out to be a card spirit called Honest, the favorite monster of the real Fujiwara. The time for the graduation duel then came. Judai recieves a call from O'Brien telling him that everyone in Domino City had vanished, and hurries off, but too late. When he arrives, he is saved by Takuma Saiou, only to be challenged to a duel. Saiou used the Arcana deck and The Fool, which he slipped into Judai's deck while pretending to be searching for tainted cards. Saiou eventually loses, and Judai escapes from the building with the help of his powers from Yubel and Elemental Hero Neos. Due to the tainted card that Saiou had also slipped into his deck, Judai is lead to believe that Johan was Trueman. Halfway through the duel, the card gets ejected, and Judai instantly returns to his senses. Back at the Academy, just about everyone has vanished, except for Fubuki, who is now dueling the real Fujiwara. After Fujiwara uses the powers of Darkness to make Fubuki lose, Judai and Johan step up to duel him in a triangle mode. Judai eventually wins, with the aid of Johan's Rainbow Dragon to create Rainbow Neos. However, then Darkness shows up, and Judai duels once more. Near the end of the duel, Judai calls out to everyone within Darkness, and they respond, returning. Finally, Judai finishes the duel with God Neos. Darkness was defeated.

In the manga, it seems to take off after the first episode of the anime, but then the story changes. Judai does not use the same deck as in the anime, but different Elemental Heroes, such as Forestman and Ocean. He still bases the deck off Fusion, but his trump card is actually The Earth, not Flame Wingman.

Judai considers Winged Kuriboh as his partner. However, he can see and talk with all the spirits in his deck and the duel spirits of other people.
