Katsuya Jonouchi (城之内 克也 Jōnouchi Katsuya) is Yugi's classmate, best friend and fellow duelist. Once a cruel bully, Jonouchi grows immensely throughout the course of the story, going, literally, from zero to hero. Whenever written in English in Japanese versions of Yu-Gi-Oh!, his name is spelled as Jyonouchi.

[edit] Personality

A first class brawler by nature, Jonouchi is unafraid to jump into fights headfirst, regardless of how many opponents he is facing. He is assertive and impulsive, but also remarkably compassionate. It is his acute sense of justice and responsibility makes Jonouchi always willing to lend a helping hand, or fist.

The loyalty Jonouchi has to his loved ones is the stuff of legends. Throughout the story, his friendship with Yugi is a prominent theme, while the affection and the overwhelming sense of protectiveness he feels for Shizuka is often the driving force behind his actions. He values the bonds between people as the most important part of life. According to Kazuki Takahashi, his biggest weakness is his natural tendency to trust people, which makes him easy to fool.

Affable, sometimes to the point of goofiness, Jonouchi is often underestimated by his opponents – an unwise move, given his extraordinary skill as a duelist. His persistence is unfaltering. No matter how many times he falls, he will pick himself up and carry on all the stronger. In duels, Jonouchi, above all, strives to fight with honor. His quest to become a True Duelist plays a decisive role in the outcome of Battle City, and consequently, the recovery of Dark Yugi’s lost memory.

[edit] History

Jonouchi is a product of a broken home. His parents divorced when he was a child, and his mother moved away from Domino, taking Shizuka with her. Left alone with a father who divided his time between drinking and gambling, Jonouchi turned to a street life and joined Hirutani’s gang. In middle-school, he found a loyal friend and verbal sparring partner in Honda and eventually parted ways with his gang.

[edit] Early Manga

In his first manga appearance, Jonouchi is depicted as a loud-mouthed bully who is appalled by Yugi's meekness. He mocks Yugi's effort to assemble the Millennium Puzzle and even goes so far as to toss one of its pieces into a swimming pool in an attempt to teach his classmate "how to be a man." However, after being brutally beaten by Ushio, and witnessing Yugi stand up in his defense at the cost of physical harm, Jonouchi is so consumed by guilt that he promptly retrieves the puzzle piece and returns it to Yugi as an offer of friendship.
