The Millennium Items are instruments of black magic created in Ancient Egypt three millennia prior to the events of Yu-Gi-Oh. Apart from granting their wielders the power to create Games of Darkness and deal Penalty Games, each of these items has its own unique ability, such as mind control or precognition. Additionally, the Egyptian God Cards can be controlled only by the possessors of the Millennium Items.

The souls of Dark Yugi and Dark Bakura are sealed into two of these seven items (the Millennium Puzzle and the Millennium Ring, respectively).

According to Pegasus, the Millennium Items have an evil intelligence and are able to act semi-independently from their users.

[edit] Origin

3000 years ago, the Millennium Items were created to keep the ancient magic of the Shadow Games locked up for eternity. When the kingdom was being attacked by invaders, Aknadin turned to the Ancient Book of Millennium Magic for a solution. He was able to translate parts of the book in which a special technique was written. The technique allowed one to make special metal which then could be used to create seven treasures with a concealed power of darkness. He prepared the ritual with three sorcerers. Akunumkanon realized the world might be lead into darkness if that power was released. However, he trusted his brother, so he left him to do whatever he wished.

After leaving his wife and son behind, Aknadin gathered an army and headed for Kul Elna. The ritual required 99 lives as sacrifices, so they slaughtered many villagers which consisted of thieves and graverobbers. Their bodies were boiled and used as a material for the Items, which were then contained in the Pharaoh's Memory Tablet. Aknadin brought back the creations to the palace and gave each Item to its designated holder. They managed to defend the kingdom from the invaders by summoning monsters.

[edit] Individual Items

[edit] Millennium Puzzle

The Millennium Puzzle was originally owned by Akunumkanon, which was inherited by the Pharaoh. Yugi is the present day owner of the Item. It was written in the Book of The Dead that whoever solves the Puzzle will inherit the Game of Darkness, dispense justice to all and judge the evil.

In 1960, Yugi's grandfather found the Puzzle in the Pharaoh's Tomb, when he was looking for the "ultimate game". Eight years prior to the events of the series, Yugi finds the Puzzle stored in its box in a corner in his grandfather's game shop. He believes whoever completes the Puzzle will have their wish granted. When completed, the Puzzle looks like an upside-down pyramid. When Yugi completed the Puzzle, he gained Dark Yugi as his alter-ego, as well as the friendship of Jonouchi and Honda.

It was shown in the manga that only the chosen one is allowed to put the Puzzle together. During the Dungeon Dice Monsters Arc when Otogi's father tries to put the pieces together, the Item traps him in an illusion which knocks him out causes him to drop it.

[edit] Millennium Ring

The Ring was Mahado's property until Dark Bakura's past self took it from him. The present day owner of the Ring is Ryo Bakura.

In the present, the Ring was kept safe in the underground temple of Kul Elna, in the Pharaoh's Memory Tablet. Shadi brought in a thief to see if he was worthy enough for the Item. However, the Ring deemed his spirit to be useless, stabbed the man with its prongs and burned his body. The Ring is next seen with a merchant, who sells it to Ryo's father. He then gives it to Bakura as a gift.

The Ring's powers include sealing souls into inanimate objects and the ability to detect other Millennium Items.

[edit] Millennium Eye

The Millennium Eye originally belonged to Aknadin, the Item's present day owner is Pegasus J. Crawford. The Eye grants its wearer the ability to read a person's every thought. This allows Pegasus to know what cards his opponents are holding in their hands and what tactics they have in mind. The Eye's powers also allow him to seal people's souls in foreign objects, such as a television or Soul Prison cards as part of his Penalty Games. However, the souls can be restored to their respective bodies. In Ancient Egypt, the Eye was used to show the real appearance of a person's Ka.

The Eye is capable of granting a wish of the wearer at the time they insert it into their eye sockets. Aknadin wished for his son to be the Pharaoh, while Pegasus wished to meet Cyndia again. For both of them, this eventually ended in tragedy.

According to Kazuki Takahashi, the Millennium Eye may have brainwashed Pegasus into creating Duel Monsters by taking advantage of his skills as an artist.

[edit] Millennium Key

Owned by Shada in Ancient Egypt, this Item belongs to Shadi in the present day. The Key allows its owner to open and enter a person's Soul Room. The Soul Room reflects said person's soul, nature, strengths, weaknesses, complexes and traumas. Shadi uses the Key to determine a human's power by looking at their Soul Room. He can also rearrange the room to his tastes, allowing him to change its owner's personality. In the anime, the Key was used to grant Pegasus and his group invisibility when they were looking for the God Cards' tablet.

In Ancient Egypt, the Key was used to look into a person's heart and look at their Ka.

[edit] Millennium Scales

Another of Shadi's Millennium Items, the Scales originally belonged to Karim. The Scales were used only once, during the Game of Darkness with Mr. Kanekura. According to Shadi, it weighs sin and punishes the guilty.

In the anime, the Pharaoh used the Scales to fuse himself as Chaos Soldier with Kaiba's Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon.

[edit] Millennium Rod

The Millennium Rod belonged to Priest Seto in Ancient Egypt. During the ages, the gravekeepers kept the Item safe, along with the Millennium Tauk. Five years prior to Battle City, Marik Ishtar took the Rod when his hate for the Pharaoh gave birth to his alter-ego.

The Rod has the ability to brainwash and take control of a chosen target(s). Its bottom part also serves as a dagger.

[edit] Millennium Tauk

Originally owned by Priestess Isis, with the present day owner being Ishizu Ishtar. She acquires it sometime after her brother takes the Rod with himself.

The Tauk allows its wearer to look into the future.
