[edit] Personality

Paradox treats his entire mission as an "experiment". He appears to hold a dislike for humans and does not understand their destructive behavior. He believes only he can change and save his future.

Atsushi Tamura in an interview commented that a common trait between him and Paradox is that if they say they are "struggling with the grief" or they "don't recognize their own selves", that remark comes out as a joke. In a later interview when he was asked how he views Paradox's role, he stated that some time ago people would have called him a villain; but Paradox has peculiar motive to battle, he doesn't want people to watch and think he is "just the usual evil character". He added that Paradox acts while he is carrying grief on his shoulders.

[edit] Biography

Spoiler warning: Plot details and/or ending follow.

Paradox with Sin Paradox Dragon, not quite resembling each other.

A mysterious man from the distant and ruined future, Paradox desires to prevent the world from being destroyed. He travels back in time in order to change and experiment with history to save the future.

He is possibly the person given the orders to eliminate the Creator of Duel Monsters, but who gave it to him under what circumstances is not known.

He first encounters Yusei in Neo Domino City and steals his Stardust Dragon in a duel by sealing it up in a blank card, turning it into an inverted Duel Monsters card. He explains Yusei he will perish with his era, then travels into the past, leaving Yusei and the others behind. He is next seen in Judai's time in Venice, Italy. He attacks Judai with Cyber End Dragon and Rainbow Dragon, but he is protected by Neos. Unable to break through Judai's defenses, he summons Stardust Dragon to take thim down. Stardust's attack heavily damages Neos and sends Judai crashing into the wall. Stardust Dragon attacks them for a second time when Yusei arrives with Crimson Dragon to protect them from the dragon's attack, catching Paradox off-guard. Noting this era will be also eliminated by his experiments, Paradox disappears.

He ends up in Domino City, Yugi's time, where Pegasus is attending an event to hand out cards for the children. He once again summons Cyber End Dragon and Rainbow Dragon and attacks the gathering. Cyber End Dragon's blasts damage the nearby buildings, causing them to collapse on the crowd and kill everyone, except Yugi. Before he manages to finish Yugi off, the Crimson Dragon appears and takes Yugi away.

Thirty minutes back in time, Paradox arrives at the gathering's place, only to find the three protagonists waiting for him instead. When Yugi asks what kind of person he is, he explains he is from the future which was destroyed by Duel Monsters. He intends to destroy the game and experiment with history until he can change the bad future. Yusei and Judai argue with him, but Paradox doesn't listen to them, declaring their answers nonsense. Yusei then challenges him to a duel, which he accepts, saying he'll destroy their trusted Duel Monsters, marking the start of the ultimate showdown between the four.

Paradox starts with playing Sinful World - Sin World, turning the entire city transparent and surround the field with purple space. He gains an early advantage in the duel by summoning Sin Cyber End Dragon and Sin Rainbow Dragon later on. He pushes the historical duelists in the corner, he even manages to summon Sin Paradox Dragon, his signature monster. However, Yugi makes a comeback and destroys his dragon with his Black Magicians and Black Twin Birth. Paradox then activates Sin Paradigm Shift, paying half of his Life Points to summon Sin Truth Dragon while offering his body as a sacrifice, fusing into the being. He declares his grand experiment has been accomplished and says goodbye to his enemies. When Yusei finds the situation hopeless, Paradox taunts him with his earlier words, saying he's overcome with despair. But the heroes manage to take back Stardust Dragon from Paradox and unite their powers to take him down, destroying Sin Truth Dragon. Paradox asks himself if his experiments were a mistake then disappears as well.

[edit] Paradox's D-Wheel

Paradox's D-Wheel, looking like something which would complain about being a vehicle any second.

Paradox's D-Wheel is an unique model, capable of time travel and transforming into a flying machine, flying above the ground. Paradox traveled in time using it, as confirmed by the 10th Anniversary Animation Book. It is also much bigger than an average D-Wheel, about twice the size of Yusei's D-Wheel.

[edit] Quotes

  • "If I let history be, the world will be destroyed. I have come here to change that hopeless future."
  • "Why do people act like this? They will just continually destroy the environment, cause disputes, hate each other, discriminate the ugly species! This world must be corrected!"
  • "My experiments... Was it a mistake?"

[edit] Duel Monsters / Magic and Wizards

Paradox's deck is based around the corrupted form of the monsters he has stolen called Sin monsters. They are Sin Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Sin Red-Eyes Black Dragon, Sin Stardust Dragon, Sin Cyber End Dragon and Sin Rainbow Dragon. He also owns Sin World, a Field Magic Card which allows him to add Sin Monsters to his hand and bring them out more quickly. He possesses three unique Sin Monsters, Sin Parallel Gear, Sin Paradox Dragon and Sin Truth Dragon.

[edit] Trivia

  • The movie trailer's tagline refers to Paradox as the "most powerful enemy".

  • Some of Paradox's laughs sound like Hiruma's from Eyeshield 21. They also share the same voice actor.
  • His buckle resembles the Eye of Wdjat a little.
  • Paradox wears his Duel Disk on his right arm, suggesting that he is left-handed, making him one of the very few left-handed duelists. The other known left-handed duelists are Lucciano and Dark Glass.
  • The head design on Paradox's D-Wheel carries aspects of Paradox's main dragons, such as the gem on Sin Paradox Dragon's tail or Sin Truth Dragon's eyes.
  • Along with Pegasus and Fujiwara, Paradox also uses a Magic Card with "World" in its name to support his deck theme.
  • Sin Paradox Dragon and Sin Truth Dragon are a reference to the nature of paradoxes, while Sin Paradigm Shift is a reference to paradigm shift. Sin Parallel Gear could refer to the concept of parallel worlds, which may be possibly created during time travel.
  • The kanji (真 shin) used to write "sin" in the 02/2010 issue of V-Jump stands for "truth" and "reality". The 10th Anniversary Animation Book describes "sin" as a pun, derived from "new" (新 atarashii) which can be also read as shin.
  • Paradox's name comes from paradox, a group of statements which lead to contradiction, or a situation which defies intuition. Time travels are prone to paradoxes because of the possibilities that can occur during traveling in time.
