Yugi Mutou is an introverted high school freshmen with a passion for games. Even though he appears to be well-liked by some of his classmates, Yugi shies away from taking part in group activities and spends his time trying to assemble an ancient Egyptian artifact called the Millennium Puzzle, instead. His only friend and something of a protector is Anzu Mazaki, while classmates Katsuya Jonouchi and Hiroto Honda regularly engage in bullying him. When Yugi is offered protection by a notorious high school monitor Ushio, an unlikely chain of events that profoundly change his life sets off.

Despite Yugi not being able to remember what happened last night, he is still pleased he was able to complete the Millennium Puzzle. As Yugi continues down the school corridoor, Jounouchi is waiting around a corridoor. They exchange welcomes before Jounouchi tells Yugi about a treasure of his that he can't show Yugi "It's something you can show but Can't see"! Yugi looks confused, giving up Jonouchi tells him the answer "It's friendship" Yugi smiles, Jounouchi quickly blushes wondering how he could say something so "Corny". Running away to save himself any further embrassment, Jounouchi leaves his shoe behind. Leaving Yugi running after his new friend.

[edit] Games

[edit] Items
  • Knife
  • Pile of bills
[edit] Rule(s):
  • Players take turns placing the bundle of money on the back of their hand and using the knife to pick as many bills as possible without injuring themselves
  • Players must pick more than one bill in each turn; the players keep all the bills they collect this way
  • The game continues until all the money is gone and the winner is the player who collected more bills
  • If a player tries to take the money by hand or quits, they forfeit all the money to the opponent
[edit] Summary

Yugi gets the first turn through a round of rock-paper-scissors. He stabs the bundle and picks ten bills saying that not many stuck despite him using a lot of strength. As Ushio prepares to take his turn, Yugi warns him that the object of the game is controlling one's greed and that stabbing with too much strength will result in injury and subsequent loss. Ushio ignores the warning and manages to pick more than 100000 yen. He boasts about it saying that using more strength is alright, but Yugi says that controlling his greed will get harder as the game progresses. Less and less money remains in the bundle with each turn and eventually, Ushio is unable to stop himself from stabbing too hard. At this point Yugi informs him that a Game of Darkness reveals a person's true nature and thus determines their fate. Upon realizing this, Ushio decides to resort to cheating and and tries stabbing Yugi with the knife. Yugi dodges the attack and concludes he was right in assuming his opponent wouldn't be able to follow the rules. As the eye of Wedjat appears on his forehead, he calls Ushio a greedy bully who hurt his friends and try to steal money from him.

[edit] Penalty Game

Yugi calls for the Penalty Game Greed (Illusions of Avarice) and Ushio suddenly starts seeing money in rubbish surrounding him. In a fit of glee, he frantically tries collecting the bills as Yugi walks away with the real money saying that considering Ushio's greed, the Penalty might just be a happy ending for him.

[edit] Anime Adaptations

[edit] Yu-Gi-Oh! (Toei series)

This chapter was closely adapted into Episode 1 of the Toei series, entitled "The Violent Battle - A Shadow Game".

[edit] Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters

Segments of this chapter were partially reconstituted into a flashback in Episode 3 due to the decision to skip most source content from Volumes 1-7 of the manga.

[edit] Trivia

  • The game Ushio and Dark Yugi play in this chapter is reminiscent of the prologue page at the beginning of the chapter.
  • The inside of the Millennium Puzzle's box appears to be lined with material of some sort throughout the course of the chapter, this is not seen again in future chapters.
  • Ushio the bully would later appear as a police officer in the anime "Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 5D's"
  • In this chapter it states that the Millennium puzzle was taken by "A team of British Archeologists" from a crypt in the "Valley of the Kings", this is disproved by Duel 279, Whether this was an unintentional mistake simply Sugoroku Mutou making up stories to cover his past is debatable.
