Ryo Marufuji (丸藤亮 Marufuji Ryō), is considered to be perhaps the strongest duelist at Duel Academia. His dueling ability is referred to as 'perfect', and despite his unfeeling exterior he actually cares a lot for his younger brother, Sho.

Ryo is a top notch duelist at Duel Academy earning him the nickname of Kaiser Ryo. In every duel he was ever in at Duel Academy, he never lost except to Carmilla & Yubel and also had a tied match with Judai. After he left Duel Academy and participated in Underground Duels, he adopted the persona of Hell Kaiser Ryo. He then started act evil and even treated Sho with no respect.

[edit] Seven Stars
When Judai & Sho were caught sneaking into the Abandon Dorm, they were punished into a tag duel against the Paradox Brothers. Sho didn't want to duel, because of what Ryo said. This caused Ryo to duel against Judai. Ryo showed no mercy against Judai with his Cyber Dragons and defeated Judai. When it came around the time for the duel against North School, the Cronos chose Ryo to duel against them like they always had, but he decided to sit out for that year allowing Misawa or Judai to duel instead.
Later on during the season, the Seven Stars started to appear. Ryo was trusted by Samejima to protect a key so the Seven Stars wouldn't get to it. After Judai successfully defeated the first of them, Darkness, Carmilla appeared. After she successfully defeated Cronos, Ryo decided to try to defeat her. At first he brings out his infamous Cyber End Dragon, but had to use De-Fusion to negate one of her traps. Later on he brings out two new monsters, Cyber Barrier Dragon & Cyber Laser Dragon. But in the end, she captures Sho and puts his soul in her resurrected Cyber End Dragon which makes Ryo forfeit his duel. Afterwards his soul his sucked up into a little doll just like Cronos. It wasn't until after Judai defeated her that he returned to normal.
At the end of season, it was Ryo's last year at Duel Academy. He then had to choose an opponent for a graduation duel and it was Judai. Both of them put on a spectacular duel. Both of them pulled out every stopped against each other. Ryo even pulled out some two new monsters known as Cyber Giraffe & Cyber Phoenix. Neither of them would back down. Towards the end of duel they both had strong monsters. Ryo had his Cyber End Dragon at 36,900 while Judai had his Shining Flare Wingman at 20,900. But Judai played Final Fusion which caused both players to lose points from the battle causing the duel to end in a tie and ending Ryo's time at Duel Academy.

After his departure from Duel Academy, Ryo entered the Pro Leagues with top notch duelists from around the world. His first duel in the Pro Leagues is none other than Edo Phoenix. Ryo does everything he can to win this duel so he can ascend in the Pro League world, but lost to Edo Phoenix's E-Heroes. After that he went in a downward spiral losing duel after duel. It wasn't until he was offered to enter in Underground Duels. His first match is up against a guy named Mad Dog Inukai. He uses his Slime Deck which mobilizes most of Kaiser's monsters. In the end Ryo was forced to bring out a monster known as Chimeratech Over Dragon. It allowed him to win the duel, but it caused to become darker. He then adopted the persona of Hell Kaiser Ryo.
After winning countless matches in the Pro Leagues, Ryo decides to obtain some cards that are like the darker side of the Cyber Dragons. So he goes to the Tibetan Mountains and then climbs all the way to the top and sees Master Samejima there waiting for him.
