Ryuji Otogi (御伽 龍児 Otogi Ryūji) is Yugi’s classmate and the inventor of the Dungeons, Dragons and Dice game (Dungeon Dice Monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime). Even though he’s introduced as an antagonist with a vendetta against Yugi, Otogi quickly becomes part of Yugi’s circle of friends and goes on to face Marik’s challenges in Battle City by their side.

[edit] Personality
Otogi is a smooth customer who impresses the girls with his talent for rigged games of cards and dice. He specializes in making bets on shell games (also known in Japan as bar bet games) where the odds are in his favour. He uses the shell games 'cup and dice' and 'four aces' to successfully fool Katsuya Jonouchi, although he himself is fooled by Dark Yugi's knowledge of such games.
He is also a genius game designer, the inventor of Dungeon Dice Monsters - D.D.M. (known in the original manga as D.D.D. - Dungeons, Dragons and Dice). Otogi sells the game at his family game store, the Black Clown (known as the Black Crown in the original manga, the spelling was corrected for the bunkoban releases). In the anime, Otogi was in contact with Pegasus J. Crawford of Industrial Illusions to produce D.D.M. together, but after the Duelist Kingdom tournament he had been unable to speak with Pegasus. He thinks that by defeating Pegasus, Yugi caused Pegasus to disappear and therefore holds a strong grudge against him.
In the manga, Otogi's grudge with Yugi is something that originated in the family. Otogi's father, known as Mr. Crown, was once a student of Yugi's grandpa Sugoroku Mutou who wanted to learn more about how to be an expert at all games. Hearing about the legends of the Millennum Puzzle, Otogi's father challenged Sugoroku to 'the Devil's Board Game', a cursed game which horribly deforms the loser by betting years of life. The winner of the game would get the Millennium Puzzle, and Otogi's father lost. He became hideously deformed, and held a grudge against the Mutou family from then on. Otogi was trained as a tool for revenge against that hated family, living only to pay back the humiliation his father suffered.
When the hatred has passed, Otogi becomes a valuable ally of Yugi and his friends. He frequently squabbles with Hiroto Honda over the affections of Shizuka Kawai, but he proves a great help with defeating the Big 5 in the Virtual World and travels across the United States to help stop the Doma Organization. Being somewhat of an expert in games himself, he often offers Duel Monsters advice from the ringside to his friends mid-duel.

Otogi never duels in the manga, however he does claim to love the game. In the anime, he duels a total of three times. The first time, he and Jonouchi assemble on-the-spot decks from brand new packs of cards. Jonouchi is largely overconfident because of his recent victory over American Duel Monsters champion Bandit Keith Howard and Otogi defeats him with little trouble.
Otogi uses a custom deck in the Virtual World made from the world's card database. He chooses cards which are references to D.D.M., such as God Orgoth and Dice Dungeon, along with existing cards which were used in D.D.M. such as Yaranzo. His opponent is Big 4, in a three-on-one duel with Shizuka and Honda at his side. He is plays well, having to protect the amateur Shizuka along with himself, but only wins thanks to the assistance of his teammates. Otogi uses a similar D.D.M.-themed deck in his final duel during Doma, where he goes against Valon. The duel is once again a team duel, and this time Otogi has Rebecca Hopskins on his side. Despite the odds in his favor against the lone Valon, he is defeated by Valon's devastating Armor deck.
