Timeline of the Yu-Gi-Oh! series
From Janime
(Note: The timeline is still under construction, expect several things to be missing and/or inaccurate. Discussion thread can be found on the Janime forum. Please discuss your changes there before making them, or use the article's discussion page. Thank you!)
[edit] Guidelines
- Dates stated in the series itself or by outside sources are used.
- Events whose dates are approximate are written in italics. By default, all birthdates are estimates as only the day and month of birth were stated by Takahashi, but the year of birth was not.
- In several cases, the order of events cannot be determined because it is impossible to begin with, such as events which occurred before the beginning of the story.
- For the sake of simplicity, the manga and the anime timelines for the first series are considered as one. However, the manga's dates take priority over the dates shown in the anime. If dates contradict in both mediums, the manga again takes priority. Filler arcs, such as Doma and KC Grand Prix are omitted due to the plotholes and writing errors they contain regarding the series' overall timeline, but will be noted minimally regardless.
- The Viz version of the manga translates parts of the Japanese manga differently. A notable edit is Kaiba stating Duel Monsters was created in the mid 90s when he's talking to Ishizu in Volume 10 of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist. However, this line is absent in the Japanese manga, meaning that Kaiba's statement was merely a choice on the translator's part and is not canon.
- Explanations for some of the dates are listed in the References section. Proper citation will be implemented upon the implementation of the Cite extension.
The tiers of canonicity are listed below. Lower tiers are canon only if they do not contradict the evidence presented in any of the higher tier sources.
For Yu-Gi-Oh!:
1. The original Japanese manga. The revised bunkoban version
takes precedence over the tankobon version in the event of a
contradiction.
2. Statements made by Kazuki Takahashi. (For example, in the Gospel of Truth.)
3. The English version of the manga released by Viz. If a clue is found
in the Viz version, the original Japanese version should be checked
accordingly to see if the edit in question was not a choice on the
translator's part.
4. The second series anime made by NAS in its original Japanese form.
For Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and 5D's:
1. The anime series made by NAS in its original Japanese form.
2. Official supplemental sources made for the anime.
3. The manga adaptations, which actually have their own continuity. They should be relied on only as a last resort.

[edit] References
- The time period of "the 1960s" is given as the time that Sugoroku Mutou finds the Millennium Puzzle in chapter 279 of the manga and episode 199 of the Duel Monsters anime. In the Gospel of Truth, Kazuki Takahashi mentions that Sugoroku was 40 years old at the time.
- For GX, dates were occasionally shown in the anime, such as Marufuji Ryo graduating from the Duel Academia in 2004 and Judai Yuki starting his studies in 2004 (Episode 156).
- For 5D's, the date is explicitly shown in Ride 01 of the 5D's manga. The anime does not state the year the series takes place in.
- The characters' birthdays are listed in the Gospel of Truth.
- In Vol. 5, Duel 40 of the manga, Mokuba mentions "When Seto-sama was ten and I was five...", making the age difference five years between them. Thus, Mokuba was born in 1981.
- Cyndia's day of birth was never stated, but it is known she died at the age of 17, shortly after Pegasus' 17th birthday. This would make her slightly older than him.
- Cyndia's death happened shortly after Pegasus' birthday. Pegasus stated that "for months he stared at the white canvas of his heart". Again, his birthday is in October, so after a few months of grieving a new year has surely begun.
- Ishizu said that the tragedy of the Ishtars occurred five years before Battle City. If we go by the anime, Pegasus met Ishizu when he intended to seal the God cards in Egypt, at which time she already had the Necklace. Before the tragedy the Necklace was kept in the temple along with the Rod. Therefore Pegasus could've created the God cards five years ago. When he found the Gods' tablet, he also claimed his game would be finally complete. Thus creating and finishing the card game in a span of two years would make sense.
- In Episode 14 of GX, it is stated that the students went on a winter break. Therefore, the new year rolls around between episodes 13-14.
- The title of Episode 66 of GX is Judai's New Year Dream Duel. Therefore, the new year rolls around between episodes 65-66.
- New Year occurs between Episodes 116 and 117 of GX.
