Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Episode 001 - The Terrifying Blue Eyes White Dragon
From Janime
The Terrifying Blue Eyes White Dragon is the first episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime.
Yugi's grandfather, Sugoroku Mutou, is introduced as the owner of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, one of the rarest cards in Duel Monsters, a card that Seto Kaiba
will do anything to get his hands on. After Sugoroku refuses to sell
the card, Kaiba abducts him and forces him into a duel, which Sugoroku
loses, along with the Blue-Eyes White Dragon card that Kaiba tears
in
front of him. Appalled by Kaiba's actions, Yugi takes his grandfather's
deck and challenges Kaiba to a duel in an attempt to show him the Heart
of the Cards. What Yugi doesn't know is that Kaiba has a few more aces
up his sleeve. The duel starts in Kaiba's virtual simulator, and
Yugi swears on his grandfather's deck that he will be victorious.

[edit] Plot Summary
The scene opens to Yugi's high school, where he and a friend, Jonouchi, are playing a game of Duel Monsters.
Yugi beats Jonouchi, and adds that he's not such a strong
duelist, but that he has access to the strongest cards because his
grandfather is a card maniac who owns a game shop. He promises that
he'll take his friends there after school, saying that his grandfather
will probably even show them a 'super-ultra-rare' card he has. Seto Kaiba overhears this and decides to pay a visit to the game shop, as well, thinking that the card Yugi was refering to might be the Blue Eyes White Dragon.
The gang arrive at the shop, and Sugoroku
indeed shows them the Blue-Eyes White Dragon card. Just then, Kaiba
appears, and after a small argument with Jonouchi, he's shocked to see
that the card Yugi was talking about really is the one he suspected. He
offers Sugoroku an entire briefcase full of cards in exchange for the
Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Sugoroku refuses to part with the card, for
trade or cash, explaining that the card is valuable to him, not because
of its strenght and rarity, but because it was a gift from a dear
friend. Kaiba leaves the store in a fit of anger and thinks to himself
that he will get his hands on the card, no matter what. One of his
employees informs him that the remaining three copies of the card have
been acquired.
Back at the game shop, Sugoroku is visited by Kaiba's employees, who
tell him Kaiba has challenged him to a duel. Sugoroku wonders what would
happen if he were to refuse, and he is told that he would be taken by
force.
Yugi returns to the game shop to find it empty, and receives a phone call from Kaiba, telling him to come to the Kaiba Corporation
building and pick his grandfather up. Upon arriving there with his
friends, Yugi finds Sugoroku exhausted and on the floor, as Kaiba tells
him that the stimulation from the virtual simulator he invented was too
much for the old man. With the last of his strenght, Sugoroku gives Yugi
his deck and asks him to duel Kaiba and show him the heart of the
cards. His friends also encourage him to duel, saying that they'll take
care of his grandfather. Anzu
asks everyone to put their hands together and draws a smiley face
binding them, as a symbol of their friendship. As the ambulace arrives,
Anzu and Honda go with Sugoroku, sending Jonouchi back to cheer for Yugi.
At the dueling arena, Dark Yugi
swears on his grandfather's deck that he'll beat Kaiba. The duel starts
and Yugi is taken aback by Kaiba's solid monster images from the
virtual simulator, realizing that that's what shocked his grandfather
enough for him to be defeated. He counters Kaiba's Cyclops with his Fortress Guarding Winged Dragon, and Kaiba responds by saying that the duel wouldn't be interesting if he hadn't given Yugi that big of an advantage. He plays Saggi the Dark Clown in combination with the magic card Dark Generator and wipes out Yugi's dragon. Yugi draws the Right Leg of the Seald One
and thinks that it's useless against Kaiba's monster. Instead, he
starts playing monsters in defence mode, all of which are swiftly
destroyed. Kaiba taunts Yugi saying that he can practically hear
Sugoroku's dying breath coming from his deck, but Yugi protest saying he
can only hear the beats of his grandfather's fiery soul. He draws Gaia the Dark Knight and wipes out the Dark Clown.
Kaiba draws his trump card - the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, much to Yugi
and Jonouchi's surprise. After Kaiba destroys a few more of Yugi's
monsters and summons his second Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Yugi draws Sealing Swords of Light
and seals Kaiba's dragons for three turns. Kaiba wonders what good a
three turn delay will do him, and Yugi thinks to himself that Kaiba is
right. He looks at the cards in his hand, realizing that he can't fight
if he doesn't know how to use him.
Just as Yugi starts to lose faith, Sugoroku appears to him, saying that
he should look at the cards like they're pieces of a puzzle. Yugi gets a
clue and wonders whether his deck could possibly contain Exodia. Kaiba tells Yugi to stop stalling, or he'll forfeit the match. Yugi draws another piece of the puzzle—the Right Arm of the Sealed One. Kaiba plays Judge Man and destroys Yugi's defence monster. Yugi summons his Black Magician
and wipes Judge Man away, thinking that it's better than playing Black
Magician in defence mode and having him destroyed by Blue Eyes.
Kaiba draws his third Blue-Eyes White Dragon, destroys Black Magician, and asks Yugi what he'll do once the effect of his Sealing Swords of Light
expires in the next turn. Yugi is petrified as he draws his final card,
thinking that the odds are against him. His deck seemingly draws away
from him, and he realizes that he's afraid he'll draw the wrong card. He
sees the mark Anzu drew on his hand and has a vision of his friends
cheering for him. He thanks them and says he's not afraid anymore. He
draws the last piece of Exodia, and Kaiba's bewildered asking Yugi if he
managed to perform a miracle. Yugi attacks with Exodia, wiping out
Kaiba's monsters along with his life points.
As Mokuba
appears, unable to belive his brother lost, Yugi says that cards you
don't share a bond with are meaningless, regardless of how strong they
are. Kaiba is crushed, wondering how he could have lost. Yugi says he'll
crush the evil in Kaiba's heart. He gives him a penalty game Mind Crush and Kaiba falls to his knees.
In the hospital, Sugoroku wakes up calling out Yugi's name. Elsewhere in
a darkened room, a white-haired man is shown drinking a glass of wine.
Another man comes into the room informing him that Seto Kaiba of the Kaiba Corporation has been defeated in a duel.

[edit] Trivia
- This episode is an abridged amalgamation of manga chapters 09 and 10 (Vol. 2) and the Death-T duel between Dark Yugi and Seto Kaiba (Vol. 5).
- In the manga, Seto Kaiba ends up in a six-month coma, as a result of Yugi's Mind Crush.
- This is the only episode where Kaiba uses boku, a polite term for me, when refering to himself. After that, he would always refer to himself with ore, which is a boastful and rude form of me.
- In the opening scene of the episode, Kaiba is reading Also Sprach Zaratustra, a famous philosophical novel by Friedrich Nietzsche.
