Yugi Mutou (武藤 遊戯 Mutō Yūgi) is a tenth grade student whose alter ego is a former Egyptian pharaoh, Dark Yugi or otherwise known as Yu-Gi-Oh (literally King of Games). Yugi has a kind, forgiving nature that makes an impression on Dark Yugi. He is also a lover of all kinds of games, and rarely loses at them.

Yugi, is a pure, innocent, compassionate and kindhearted young boy who starts the series with an extreme lack of confidence, and being somewhat downtrodden by bullies Jounouchi and Honda. The only person at the time he truly opened up to was his Grandfather & Anzu Mazaki (His childhood friend).
As the series progresses, we see a great change in Yugi's confidence, aided of course by the introduction and development of his Other Self. The steady introduction and support of his friends, as well as gaining the ability to interact with his Other Self. Encouraging Yugi to be more open and vocal about his feelings, and of course bineg proud and condident of who he is.

Yugi grew up with his mother, father and grandfather in the upper floor of the Kame Game hobby shop. His father is noted briefly in the manga to be away on buisness, thus Yugi barely sees him (This explains his absence in the series), aproximately eight years prior to the start of the series, Yugi was presented with the Millennium Puzzle by his grandfather.
