Thread: Has the Toei Series Ever Been Officially Acknowledged Since It Ended?

  1. Default Has the Toei Series Ever Been Officially Acknowledged Since It Ended?

When there was that documentary for the anime's tenth anniversary, there didn't seem to be a mention of it, and I don't think I've ever heard it mentioned in an official English product. The closet we've been to an acknowledgment of its existence was when O'Brien looked on the Domino database and there were some Toei-only characters on it. I know NAS don't want to act like there ever was YGO before Duel Monsters, but surely it's an important part of objective history for the franchise.

No, aside from the few references in games and such, but most of those are more aimed towards the manga. The 10th Anniversary doesn't even acknowledge it, as it would have been a few years eariler. (Though I can't say 100% it hasn't been mentioned in like the 10th anniversary book.)

Well I think they do acknowledge the early manga, such as Ushio. But there's no real reason for them to do so, when it was made by an entirely different company, different animation and was essentially a different animal compared to Duel Monsters.

Well, it was acknowledged in season 4 of GX... I think.

I personally think that it SHOULD be acknowledged more, seeing how it was really close to the manga. Even the movie had the spirit of the original manga in it.

THIS is a good point. I am curious about it too!
I remember I was on the floor when I saw this pre-Duel Monsters periode reference too with the Monster World fun Park in 5D's...
I hope I'm not the only one to actually love this TOEI anime. Despite is serious lack of quality, it have some pretty good adjustments like the Raijinhai episode. It was the same concept of various game I was desesperately hoping before we won the "ZEXAL" thing (and I know the card blabla business rule, BUT this is love you see).
Did Takahashi himself have ever mentioned it in a interview?

Ryusaki, I don't know if it can be considered as official, but in the french release of the manga by KANA Edition, there are some kind of "articles" about it. But it's writen by our french distributor, so... bwe. I wonder if some of the old JUMP mangazines have some pages about it.

That's interesting, although unsurprising. The French manga was basically a maverick cop who played by his own rules, with little tainting by dub or TCG terms: they used the correct D.D.D. instead of D.D.M., they correctly spelled the final boss's name as 'Zork Necrophedius' instead of 'Zorc Necrophades', they used a logo similar to the Japanese manga and altered the colour each volume just like the Japanese managa... Hell, just checking now, the French GX manga uses the Japanese names -- even 'Duel Academia' instead of 'Duel Academy' and 'Osiris Red' instead of 'Slifer Red'.

I suppose I should add Noa's green hair to the list of references, but it's still pretty small. I though Aki's Violet Witch might have been a reference to Violet Hecate, but when the art and stats were revealed it seemed less likely.

I don't know about any interviews, but it was mentioned before that Takahashi originally wanted to make the entire Yugioh manga revolve more around games in general and not just the Magic & Wizards card game. That would have probably made the manga entirely more interesting since there are some duels that are tedious and after a while you kinda start to wish for a change. The first 7 volumes of the manga were certainly more original in this way. So no, you are definitely not the only one who loved the Toei series. Death-T and Monster World are what I miss the most from the Duel Monsters anime, which quite frankly yanks you into the Duelist Kingdom plot without any explanation whatsoever. The Toei series actually provides Yuugi's background as well as the explanation of just why Kaiba is his rival. The beginning of Duelist Kingdom makes me flinch and is probably the #1 reason that Duelist Kingdom is my least favorite arc of the entire anime (I have no opinion on the filler arcs because I don't acknowledge their existence).

Yet another change that makes me flinch, God name changes. This is one of the good things about French manga, generally it is more faithfully translated than english manga, which for some reason needs to Americanize (or bastardize) everything. I didn't read the french version of Yugioh, but it certainly sounds well done.

"Artist/author Kazuki Takahashi first tried to break into the manga business in 1982, but success eluded him until Yu-Gi-Oh! debuted in the Japanese Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1996...soon became enormously successful, spawning a real-world card game, video games, and four anime series (two Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! series, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's)."

Viz's summary of Takahashi in the openings of the volumes. So it has been mentioned in passing here. Most people probably wouldn't acknowledge that though.

There's some exception to the rule. In this case she remained on topic rather than post spam, and two months isn't that much of a difference compared to a year.

We've discussed it and decided the length of time since and type of post don't show purposeful necroposting. As long as it isn't a type of post that asks for info, rather than giving any, exceptions can be made.

in some guide book to the yugioh cards or mabye a shounen jump issue they gave an episode by episode short synopsis of each episode of the original yugioh series all 27 episodes of it. This might of only been released in america though.

That was a pojo book if I recall correctly, so it's not really offical. You are correct though, they did have an issue with episode summaries and titles.
