    Default Yu-Gi-Oh! Information FAQ(s) V 1.0

This is the basic outline for the new FAQ that will be on the main site (along with a whole lot of other new content.) This is in no way finished and I basically covered points that have been bugging me for a while. The other stuff will notably and undoubtedly come later on. But this is basically for you all to get a feel of what will be. Yu-Gi-Oh! FAQ

    By Tatsunoboshi Horoko

    Notes

I have created this FAQ to quell the overwhelming ignorance amongst fans about "what is what" in Yu-Gi-Oh!. But, let me get this straight. When I say "ignorance", I don't mean that in an adverse context. I simply mean that there's a general lack of definite knowledge between people who say they know facts about Yu-Gi-Oh!. Since I've been a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh!, both in manga and anime form, for years now, I decided to spread my knowledge to the masses in FAQ form.

These are just general questions I've heard over the course of my fan-hood. Most of these mix-ups and fact bloopers derive from the dub produced by 4Kids, because, let's all face it--it is the number one reason there is as much misinformation there is today.

But this FAQ will prove to be a invaluable resource to those who just want some good ol' fashioned information. ;D

    THE ENGLISH DUB (4KIDS)

    [Description Here]

    Fan Misconceptions (Dub Anime):

    Q: "What are 'Shadow Games'?"

A: "Shadow Games", as called by the English dub and manga, are basically games performed by those possessing a Millennium Item. (Let's not skip ahead into later things or include filler/filler-like events. This, is basically what they are in their truest form.) Now, "Shadow Games" (or, as I like to call them because it's a bit more inclusive 闇のゲーム/Yami no Geemu or "Games of Darkness") are basically created by a Millennium Item. There are many kinds of Games of Darkness that a person can create. All depend on the wielder, the game, and most importantly, his imagination. So, Games of Darkness aren't just prohibited to Duel Monsters (Magic and Wizards to you manga fans), it can be applied to card games, dice games, games of chance, roulette, anything the owner of the Millennium Item wills it so. They also can inflict a certain "punishment" to those who don't abide by the rules of the game and/or lose these games. These are called 罰ゲーム/Batsu Geemu or "Punishment"/"Penalty Games." They will usually cause some sort of illusion/hallucination within the persons mind. Dark Yugi has used the power of his Puzzle several times over the course of the manga series. This includes such Punishment Games as "GREED - Eyes of Avarice" and "Mind Crush." Usually these Punishment Games don't go beyond a mere illusions, but some can affect the soul of an individual as well. But, once again, to reiterate, a Game of Darkness (Shadow Game) is a game created by a Millennium Item that can cause spiritual/mental damage depending on who is the player and the opponent.

Q: "The 'Shadow Realm' is real!"

A: 4Kids has a very bad reputation for adding in stupid things that originally weren't there and (I hope) everyone knows this. The "Shadow Realm" is the Yu-Gi-Oh equivalent to Dragonball Z's "HFIL", except FUNImation fixed their mistake, Yu-Gi-Oh!...not so much...okay, not at all really. (If you don't count the Uncut edition DVD's, which I have gripes over myself....) But, for the sake of argument, let us review how the 'Shadow Realm' is just a really bad dub plot-device. (Unlike most people when they try to prove this, I will, instead, give you facts to back my statements up instead of babbling "TiS HeLL!!1")

Now, when have you heard the phrase "Send you to the Shadow Realm!" in the dub? More than likely, it's a lot--a whole lot. Sometimes they use it and it looks like it makes sense (considering on the animation/sequence of events), which doesn't make it right at all, but at least it looks..."consistent." Like, in Episode 80 (not quite filler, but an "expanded" and "re-tweaked" version of what happened in the manga), in which the loser is sent to the 'Shadow Realm.' Now, I will quote Bakura's dialogue in that scene (originally.)

    Romaji Version:

    *Kotsuzuka falls down*

Bakura: Shikkari shi na...sou de nee to sannin to koko kara ikite kaeru nee ze.

    Satake (Black-haired guy): Omae...nani itte'ndaro?

Bakura: Motto kiite nakatta no ka? Mawaru yoku mitteru'nda na...

    *Creatures crawl everywhere*

Kotsuzuka & Takaido (Glasses): N-Nanda arya...?

Bakura: Omae-tachi no mukae ni itteru shinigami-domo **...Kore wa Yami no Geemu itta hazu da. Kono dueru de maketa mono wa, yami no sekai-e hikizurikomareru no **!

    Translated Version:

Bakura: Straighten up, now...If you don't, you three will never come out of here alive.

Satake (Black-haired guy): What are you talking about?

Bakura: Weren't you listening? Take a good look around you...

    *Creatures crawl everywhere*

Kotsuzuka & Takaido (Glasses): W-What are they...?

Bakura: They are the reapers that have come for you...I told you this was a Game of Darkness. The loser of this duel will be dragged to a world of darkness!

Now, the phrase "yami no sekai" (闇の世界) was used in that dialogue. This literally translates as "World of Darkness" or "Dark World." However, this phrase is not very consistent and just seems to be a general term for "a world of darkness." This seems different from the dub's use of the "Shadow Realm" because the "Shadow Realm" appears everywhere and is used for every single "Shadow Game" imaginable and is really vague in what in the hell it is. And that "consistency" thing plays a major part in disproving this as well. I will now quote the original dialogue from Episode 60, in which Yugi fights Pandora. (This was made into dub inconstancy at its finest, people.)

    Romaji Version:

Yugi: *Seeing the way Pandora shuffles his cards* Shoto Gan Shaffuru wa kaado wo itameru ze.

Pandora: Watashi ni wa kono yarikata ga narete ima****a ne...

    Yugi: Kaato wo sasete morau!

Pandora: Douzo...Ganburaa no aida ni wa furuku kara konna kotowaza ga arimasu...Tomodachi wa shinyou sube'shi daga kaado dake wa katto se yo...to ne.

Yugi: Fu...Tomodachi? Muri da na. Kisama-ra to nado!

Pandora: Fufu...sore wa zannen da na...Shikashi, sekkaku kono youna dueru no kikai wo eta koto desushi...yuukou wo fukameru imi demo anata ni wa zonbun ni tanoshi'n de itadakitai. Korekara hajimeru akumu no shoo wo ne.

*Floorboards retract and the two are placed in leg restraints*

    Yugi: Nani...!?

Pandora: Sou...watakushi me mo...Kore de tagai ni kono ba kara nigeru koto wa dekinai! Imakara anata ni wa watakushi Kijuutsushi Pandora no seiki no daidasshutsu no shoo wo o-me ni kakemashou!!

*Blades protrude from both ends of the Duel Ring*

    Yugi: Nani...!?

Pandora: Hehehe...Hyahahahaha!

Pandora: Sono toori! Maketa hou ga kizamareru akumu no geemu!

    Translated Version:

Yugi: *Seeing the way Pandora shuffles his cards* Shotgun Shuffling damages the cards.

Pandora: I'm used to doing it this way...

    Yugi: I'll cut!

Pandora: Be my guest...There's this old saying between gamblers...Trust your friends, but always cut the cards...right?

Yugi: Hmph...friend? I don't think so. Not with the likes of you guys!

Pandora: Heh heh...that's too bad to hear...However, going through to trouble to get a chance at such a duel...I want to deepen our friendship but for you to fully enjoy yourself. The Show of Nightmares begins now.

*Floorboards retract and the two are placed in leg restraints*

    Yugi: What...!?

Pandora: Right...the same goes for me...With these, neither player can run away from this field! And now, I, Pandora the Magician, present to you the greatest escape show of the century!!

*Blades protrude from both ends of the Duel Ring*

    Yugi: What...!?

Pandora: Heh heh heh...Ha ha ha ha ha! These are rotatory cutters used in large-scale magic tricks! You must already understand...The rules of this duel...There are numbers written on the cutter's guide rail.

Yugi: Grk...Life Points?! The rotating saws advance in the more they approach zero!

Pandora: Precisely! It's a game of nightmares where the loser will be chopped up!

Yes, people, that's right. Pandora's game would kill the loser. (To all of those who say "You can't die from getting your legs chopped off!", just...no. If you don't bleed to death, I'm sure the slow and grinding pain of each limb being dismembered by sharp and pointy saw blades would make you want to die. Of course, I'm being way too descriptive for my own good.) But, if you wonder where's the inconsistency, it's the fact that the dub made the rotating cutters...ahem..."Dark Energy Discs." Instead of chopping off your legs, the single touch of them will send you "into the Shadow Realm"...which makes no sense at all. I mean, seriously. Come on. Do you have to handle them with special "Shadow Realm Protective Gloves"? How does one make a "Dark Energy Disc" anyway? Do they have to concentrate their "Shadow Powers" to materialize them or do you take regular rotating saws and just make them glowified? And if the latter was true, wouldn't things spinning at that speed simply cut the person's legs off anyway? Call it over analyzing if you want, but these are probably questions running through every confused 8 year old and parents' worried minds.

    Q: "Did Atem's original back-story take place 3,000 or 5,000 years ago?"

A: The dub has skewed the timeline to go back another 2,000 years. The Japanese version does not have this inconsistency since the story is set 3,000 years ago, which would be in the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. (Which is a more appropriate time for the story to take place, actually.)

Q: "But I heard from my friend's mother's/brother's/uncle's friend that the original version said it was 5,000 years ago!"

A: Now, this is true. The original version (along with the manga) did state "5,000 years ago" in the short prompt at the beginning of Duelist Kingdom. (In the manga, it was in the first chapter, right before the chapter started as a filler page, really.) Now, here is the exact dialogue from those scenes.

    Geemu no rekishi,
Sore wa haruka go-sennen mukashi, Kodai Ejiputo made sakanoboru to iu,
Kodai ni okeru no geemu wa, ningen to ou no mirai wo yogen'shi,
Unmei wo kimeru majutsuteki na gishiki de atta.
Sore wa "Yami no Geemu" to yobareta.
Ima, "Sennen Pazuru" wo toki, "Yami no Geemu" wo uketsugi'dashi shounen ga ita.
Hikari to yami, futatsu no kokoro wo motsu shounen...hitoatari "Yugioh" to yobu.

    The history of games.
It is said to extend five-thousand years into the past, tracing back to Ancient Egypt.
In ancient times, games would foretell the future of men and kings and determine their fates in magical ceremonies.
Those were called the Games of Darkness.
Now, a boy has solved the Millennium Puzzle, and inheritor of the Games of Darkness.
Light and dark, the boy who holds two hearts is known to others as the "King of Games."

However, what can we draw from this? Since this was originally written way back in 1996, way back before the anime was made, way back before the thought of any proper story towards the Millennium Items was made, can we really say that Takahashi-sensei knew what he was saying? Probably not, because this is erected in later chapters where "san-sennen" (三千年) is used all the time. However, the anime kept using "5,000" for this same patch of dialogue even in the Pyramid of Light movie (however, they have never ever referred to "5,000" years in the anime itself, but "3,000" like its supposed to be.) The thing is, 5,000, for whatever reason is there, even though the real date (set by the author later on) is 3,000. Now, for whatever reason, the dub did not correct this, and instead, ran with it. (Like "The Heart of the Cards.")

So, in short, the dub is just perpetually f'ed in the grand scheme of things anyway--it's nothing new, don't you think?

Edit: An interesting point has been brought up that I neglected to bring up before:

I would like to give my theory about why the very first page of the manga mentioned 5,000 years ago. It didn't mention Games of Darkness specifically took place 5,000 years ago, but the concept of games in general. The earliest form of games were discovered as dating way back in 3,000 BC, which is 5,000 years ago. Since the title of the series is, in essence "King of Games", it would make sense if the blurb was specifically relating to games, and not so much about where the Millennium Puzzle or Atemu came from.

A thanks goes out to Yuki Ryu for this tidbit of vital information for our basic knowledge.

Q: "Is Yugi's title 'King of Games' or 'Duel King'?"

A: The dub (bless it's heart) decided that instead of having two separate names for two separate titles they would just merge them together. Yugi's title after he won Duelist Kingdom was "The King of Duelists"--the "Duel King." And "Duel King" is what he's usually referred to by other duelists until the end of the series. However, as seen above, the word "Yu-Gi-Oh" (King of Games/Game King) is used. So, which one is correct? Well, the former is. However, depending on what you're talking about, both are correct. When talking about Yugi's title as a duelist, it is "Duel King", but if you want to use an overall term for Yugi, you can use "King of Games" or "King" or "Dark Yugi" or even "Yam--"...better yet, let's try and avoid "Yami" for the time being. I'm getting to that next.

Q: "Is the other Yugi's name 'Yami' too? He said it once in one episode."

A: Ah, yes, the infamous "Yami." Where does this come from? Well, it's actually the untranslated shorthand form of the full regular term for the other Yugi, "闇遊戯"/Yami Yuugi, or "Dark Yugi"/"The Yugi of the Darkness." It "originates" from dub episode 41. Dark Yugi goes down a list of things he was called, "Pharaoh, Yugioh, Yami", all of which, if were true, would screw up the entire storyline (and it made the dub dig itself in a whole later on. I think their cover up to Dark Yugi's lost memory was "Oh, I remember, but I don't remember all that much.") But, anyway, this term wasn't limited to the dub. Before this episode aired, and before the show was even all the way dubbed, "Yami" has been a fan-term for the Dark Yugi for years before this. (Because people saw "Yami" from "Yami Yuugi" and used that. I guess it was better than "Dark"....) So, to make a long story short, "Yami" is in no way his official name...it's just more dub brilliance.

Q: "The Winged Dragon of Ra's chant is..."

A: The Ra chant...let's get into that, shall we?

The Winged Dragon of Ra (ラーの翼神竜/Winged Divine [God] Dragon of Ra) was one of the most powerful Gods of the tri-God hierarchy. However, unlike the other Gods, its effects only list "????" instead of an actual effect. This, however, is intended. Because of the secret Hieratic Text, only those who can read it can control Ra. Mai, obviously not being able to read a dead tounge, was helpless as Malik took over her newly aquired monster.

Now, the chant, originally, was...well, gibberish. Not the sort of gibberish Raiden from Mortal Kombat screams every time he does a Torpedo attack. (MK game players will get this....) But, I mean a sort of "convincing" gibberish. (Like a made up language in a sci-fi show.) In the manga, this would be shown by way of small hieroglyphs (obviously the same that are on the card itself if not different.) But, you basically get the idea that Malik is reading the text verbatim and not doing a translation. The dub, brilliant as it is, decided, "Hey, we should make this English...not only that, let's make it rhyme!" Because nothing says 3,000 year old dead language unless you make a rhyme out of it!

A long time ago, I had written down a “chant” of sorts based off of what Malik said in the Japanese episodes. Please note that those are entirely hearsay and don't take those as fact if you happen to see it floating around the Internet somewhere. (Even I try not to acknowledge it.) The real chant changes episode to episode. As you can hear in the following examples.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Episode 92 - The Mystery of the Hieratic Text

Anzu: Nani? Nanika no jumon na no? (What? Is this some spell, or something?)
Jonouchi: Yugi! Are o miro! (Yugi! Look at that!)
Yugi: Raa no kyuutai ga katachi o kaeteiku! (Ra's sphere body is taking shape!)
    Kaiba: Kore wa...? (I-Is this...?)

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Episode 97 - One Turn Kill

Bakura: Nanda? Nani ga hajimaru!? (What? What's happening now?)
Malik: Wakaranai. Ano hieratikku tekisuto, hajimete kiku kotoba da! (I don't know. I've never heard that Hieratic Text before.)
Dark Malik: Ore no shujinkaku wa Sennen Roddo no shin no keiji o ukete wa inai...Ore dake ga Kami no tokushu nouryoku o kaidoku dekiru no da! (My host side hasn't gotten the Millennium Rod's true revelation...Only I can decipher God's special ability!)

    Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Episode 139 - Activate Devil's Sanctuary!

Dark Malik: Miru ga ii! Inishie no jumon ni yori ware ni ataerareshi chikara o! (Behold the power this ancient spell has bestowed upon me!)
    Yugi: Nani!? (What!?)

    Yu-Gi-Oh! (Manga) - Battle 269

    Yu-Gi-Oh! (Manga) - Battle 274

As you can both hear and see, Dark Malik does not recite a dead language in English poetic prose. How one can even do so is beyond me, but it's hard enough trying to do that in a widely spoken language like Spanish, less known a dead Egyptian one.

What really gets me is that the English version of the Pyramid of Light movie actually uses a sort of variation of the Hieratic chant that was recited by Malik. Now, why couldn't they have done this for the TV series anime? I can't answer that. I'm chocking it up to 4Kids being 4Kids. They make less sense the more they go on with a series.

    Fan Misconceptions (Dub/Other):

Q: "I hate the dub! This "Heart of the Cards" BS really gets on my nerves! That was never in the original!!"

A: Woah, woah...slow down there, camper. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, shall we? Now, I know the dub throws around the expression "Heart of the Cards" as much as dub Pokmon throws around "Gotta Catch 'em all" (Well, "Pokmon GETTO da ze" is really two ends of the same odd, so it sort of evens itself out because both are catchphrases, but that's beside the point.) Anyway, yes, "Heart of the Cards." Well, for everyone thinking this is just another case of dub brilliance...you're half right and half wrong. You're half right because 4Kids did take the phrase, pump it full of "catch-phrasium" and slapped it on t-shirts, lunch boxes, bookbags, magazine articles, because every show needs a catch-phrase! You're half wrong, because the phrase was in the original version! *Shock and awe* However, it was not used as frequently or as moronically as it is (was) used in the dub, it was there.

Let's start from where it originated from. Chapter 9: Sugoroku shows off his mighty Blue-Eyes White Dragon to his grandson and friends (Jonouchi and Anzu) when all the sudden, the baddie for the week, Seto Kaiba, comes in and offers to trade for it (to no avail.) Sugoroku tells him that once there's a card you truly value, it grows a heart of its own. Kaiba later steals the card and then uses it as his own against Yugi in their Game of Darkness. However, the card did not recognize Kaiba as its rightful owner and simply destroyed itself as a result. Then, later on, in Magic and Wizards' second appearance in Death-T, Chapter 28, the Heart of the Cards/"Kaado no Kokoro" (カードの心) as it was called, was brought back.

But, "cards having heart" means that the cards have their own feelings and such and "faith" is sort of the link between them. But, beyond the first episode in the anime (and some misc. episodes) and a few more chapters in the manga (and some misc. chapters) the phrase "Heart of the Cards" isn't uttered. (All of you buying the Viz version of the manga can see this plain as day, as well as the whole "Shadow Realm" hullabaloo.) Characters with their eyes closed and fingertips on their decks usually will murmur "Trust in the cards"/"Kaado wo shinjiru" (カードを信じる.) So, you just add "heart of--" in front of "cards" and...boom! You get a catch phrase for the next 223 episodes!

Oh well, "Get your game on!!", everyone!! D:

Q: "The dub is stupid!! They take all the blood and stuff out!!"

A: This is the number one complaint of the misinformed fan. The kind of fan who hears that all forms of anime are editted and cut out blood and dialogue for the greater purpose of toy sales. They think that Yu-Gi-Oh and its "Season 0" (I hate this phrase, by the way,) and manga are filled with sex, drugs, blood, and cursing that would make American ******bers from the late '90's look like Girl Scouts sweetly trying to persuade you to buy some cookies.

Now, let's just start with the manga. Ah, yes, the manga. It has gone through more retconning than you can shake a stick at (as much as I love it to death, it has. You have to admit it.) But, the manga...the manga was generally...a tad bit more graphic than both the Toei animated series and the NAS animated series. Earlier chapters involved games of chance that would usually end up in very grim circumstances. (A sting from a scorpion, a heart attack from an illusion, and yes, the infamous "prisoner on fire" game.) So, to set the record straight--Yes, the manga is generally more graphic than the anime(s.) Now, does this make the manga a blood-piss-gore-fest? Heavens, no. However, you will find scenes with more blood than there is in the anime. (It’s rare to see any blood in the anime, by the way.) Does this make it cooler? Should you read it for that purpose and that purpose alone? Well, if you're a masochist into manga for that stuff only, I guess.

Now, the anime. The anime generally is a watered down version of the manga...(sort of ironic 4Kids makes something already watered down into something more watered down, in my opinion.) The anime doesn't show as much blood, changes a few of the dialogue wordings around, and adds filler/filler episodes(many people don't mind filler, but I'm sort of indifferent towards it all...or I try to be at least) but generally it's a faithful port of the manga with the similar name.

But, we must also address the aforementioned Toei anime series. Of course, if you're one of those people who think that the manga was a blood-piss-gore-'n-guts-fest, this would be as well...right?

Well, no. Not at all. The Toei anime followed the manga very...loosely. Sometimes whole Games of Darkness would be replaced and some events went out of order. And, yes, even the precious Toei series had filler...quite a lot of it too. Since they only had 7 real volumes of the manga to work with, they had to add something to fill the gap. (IE: The Shi-tennou, or the "Four Heavenly Kings"/"Four Elites" of Games.) But, to reiterate, the Toei series was not really all that big of a deal when it comes to violence.

To sum it all up, people just like to hype up things not really that big a deal in any normal anime into a big deal because of their inaccessibility to it. That's all, really. Besides, violence and swears aren't everything in a series, you know. There's an actual story, plot, and a whole cast of characters, too!

Q: "Is the dub really all that different? I mean, I heard Yu-Gi-Oh! ain't all that bad..."

A: In my honest opinion? Not even getting into visual edits, the scripting and dialogue tweaks are absolutely atrocious. While I don't have any dub episodes to sit and compare with, I can recall a very serious scene with Jonouchi telling an unconscious Mai (or someone) saying something like "I'll get you back here!" Well, when it came to the dub, it turns into, "Dur, hey 'der Tristan, you betta' not be tellin' 'bout my dream wit' 'da monkey 'n 'da bananna puddin'!!"

And then there's the brilliance that are the dub characters. Some just have character personalities so radically different from what they are it's like watching two different shows. (They are two different shows, but you get what I mean.) The two in particular that seem to have the most drastic in personality changes are Kaiba and Jonouchi (but all the characters are morphed in their own ways.) However, these two...Dub Jonouchi ("Joey Wheeler") just seems to get dumber and dumber as the series progresses...it's like he can't have one serious moment without throwing some stupid joke, and that makes him really hard to take him as a character. Dub Kaiba just seems to rude 24/7...even in a particular scene in Doma, the original version of Kaiba just asked where Yugi was (Anzu telling him Paradius), and looking at the souless Jonouchi and saying something along the lines of "Him too? Hmph, that Bottom-dog..." ("bonkotsu" = "underdog"/”bottom-dog”/”common person.”) Dub Kaiba uprights says "Aww, what's the matter, baby needs his bottle?" and doesn't even ask where Yugi is. There are (many) more examples of these strokes of dub brillance, but I could start a whole section on that itself.

I wish I was exaggerating, folks, but I'm really not.

But, in my opinion, I'm completely indifferent to those who like either version of the anime. I like what I like, you like what you like. Depending on how far you are willing to learn about the series is all up to you. I can tell you right now, it won't be from the dub. Not this dub, at least.

Is my opinion on this question biased? Oh, hell yes. Does it make it any less creditable? That's up to you to decide.

Q: "I'm willing to seriously get into the series. But, reading your FAQ, I'm curious to who 'Jonouchi' is...or 'Anzu'..."

A: Here's a complete list of main character's names. Given as "flipped version" (kanji - literal name) and the English name next to it. These are all you need to essentally know. There are other supporting characters, but these are the main six.

    Japanese Name: English Name:
Yugi Mutou (武藤遊戯 - Mutou Yugi) Yugi Moto
Katsuya Jonouchi (城之内克也 - Jonouchi Katsuya) Joey Wheeler
Anzu Mazaki (真崎杏子 - Mazaki Anzu) Te Gardner
Hiroto Honda (本田ヒロト - Honda Hiroto) Tristan Taylor
Seto Kaiba (海馬瀬人 - Kaiba Seto) Seto Kaiba
Mokuba Kaiba (海馬モクバ - Kaiba Mokuba) Mokuba Kaiba

Further names can be viewed on the main site under the "Characters" sections.
    GENERAL ANIME/MANGA

    [Description Here]

    General Anime/Manga:

Q: "I see this thrown around a lot...What is 'filler'?"

A: Since Wikipedia has a much better explanation on the subject than I do, I will link to it and give an explanation. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filler_(media)]

So, filler in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters is basically anything not in the original anime. Although, since Duel Monsters sort of fudged the majority of the story up until the anime really got rolling, you can pretty much pick anything from the talk Yugi and Jonouchi had on the roof before they went to Duelist Kingdom or Yugi and Bakura's duel in Duelist Kingdom (but, if you want to get technical, those are events based off the manga.) But more "fillery" stuff includes: the trips to the Virtual World, Rebecca Hopkins, all of Doma, you know, the more obvious stuff. ;D
Q: "What is the small text above the kanji in the manga? What purpose does it hold?"

A: That is called "furigana." Furigana gives the reader of the text a more implied meaning of the word below. Sometimes this makes the reading more accurate and easy to understand. (There are some odd chances in which the furigana will be in the wrong word order though, but that's usually not the case at all.)

    SPECIFIC ANIME/MANGA

    [Description Here]

    Specific Anime/Manga:

Q: "Kaiba has two suits which follow him around in the anime. What are their names?"

    A:
In the manga, there is only one person who is present at the Battle City Finals. His name is Isono (磯野) and he serves as the MC (master of ceremonies) of the tournament until the end. In the anime, there is one more person with brown hair. He helped fly the Battle Ship to and from and also found out information about Leon in the KC Grand Prix. His name is Fuguta (河豚田.)

Q: "When does Orichalcos and KC Grandprix occur in the manga?"

    A:
Those are examples of filler. The word "filler" is explained in detail in the previous section of this FAQ.

Q: "Does this mean that filler doesn't involve the main story at all?"

    A:
This is the funny thing: filler can both affect and not affect the storyline. This is because, most of the time, events from filler episodes are recapped and not made as if they never existed. Sometimes they fit and sometimes they don't. And without having to go over this without going into an overly long explaination, I can tell you that YGO doesn't really like to make filler and then not refer to it later on. So, whether it be stuff like Rebecca's appearance or the whole Doma arc, they fit when talking in confines of the anime.

Great FAQs Horoko. I love the bit about the banana pudding.

Nice description, but it seems you have forgotten about the eye that appears on Yami Malik's ( Yes I am calling him that because that is how I differentiate him) head creates a Shadow Game as well in both anime and manga.

Another interesting thing is that the eye on Yami Malik's head may be connected to the Millennium Rod and Yami Malik himself, as his eyes and the millennium Rod's eye piece turn light pink at the same time, when the power throws Yami Bakura against the wall before the episode Yami vs Yami. I just find it really interesting because that is the only time it does that.

^It is true that the Millennium items create shadow games, but I feel that the eye on Yami Malik's head does as well. I am not trying to repeat myself just trying to get my point across. I do have a disability.....

I thought that the glowing eye on Yami no Malik's forehead was always there no matter what. I seem to recall seeing it a lot outside of Games of Darkness or even duels altogether.

Also, excellent post, Horoko. It was very informative. I particularly enjoyed the direct quotes given as examples.

The eye glowing doesn't mean that the eye on his forehead creates the Game of Darkness.

Yeah, that, too, could be the reason. (4Kids did something similiar by translating the first line as "The history of gaming." For some reason, that doesn't suit my fancy enough.) Of course, the story has been retconned so many times...

I'll make sure to put that in the FAQ as well. I want to expand more into the more problematic misinformation passed around the YGO fandom.

It could if I can find some snap shots I can show you the expression on his face and the brightness of the eye glowing before Joey's duel with him. The Millennium items have dark magic in them and being on the forehead shows it is the symbol for the Millennium Rod. I also remember when Malik uses the same symbol on his mind puppets. The eye on the forehead shows control over its victim by the use of the Millennium Rod therefore, the eye on Yami Malik's forehead is no doubt could do the same thing.

Whether or not the eye on Malik's head is connected to anything is a nonissue in this certain discussion. The fact of the matter is that Malik cannot make a Game of Darkness by himself. The Millennium Rod activates the Game by Dark Malik's will; the same as all the other Millennium Items. That is the point that is trying to be made.

Just to add to this... There was an interview with either a cast member or a producer (I forget who ) in which they commented on this. They said that "Yami" was selected because they needed a two-syllable word (or a word that could be used with an animation of two mouth flaps) that Yuugi could use to refer to the spirit that resides in his Puzzle. "Aibou" was the word used in the Japanese version. I really wish I could find this interview again, or at least remember which interviewee said this so that you could cite it in your FAQ, but I don't have or remember the source anymore. Maybe someone here will dig it up one day.

Good start on the FAQ, btw. It's got a lot of potential and I can see it getting huge and rich with information.

Actually...Yugi calls the Dark Yugi "mou hitori no boku" (about 5 flaps) while Dark Yugi uses "aibou" (2 flaps.) Dark Yugi doesn't really refer to himself as "aibou", because that would be weird.

Unless I'm reading something wrong there....

Hey, you're right about that! Hmm, I'm positive an interview describes the reason for using "Yami" as a result of the need to have a name for two mouth flaps, but now I can't remember the reason they give. I thought they said that it was a substitute for "aibou," but like you said, it's Yugi that is referred to as "aibou," not the Pharaoh. Doh! Now this will bug me all day unless I find the interview again, which is doubtful. :-\

Just a thought: I see discussions every so often as to whether or not Yugi's friends (or anyone else, for that matter) can always differentiate between the two Yugis. You know, questions like 'How come that all through Duelist Kingdom no one notices that Yugi grows two feet and gets extra eyelashes when he duels?'

Now, I know that the anime messed this up a bit, and the dub messed it up even further, but in the manga it's pretty clear that Jounouchi, Anzu and Honda notice the physical change, as well as the change in his voice when they all have their respective first encounters with Dark Yugi. On the other hand, I didn't read every single issue of the manga, so I might be mistaken. Either way, I think it would be nice to shed some light on the subject, seeing as how it's the question I get asked the most by non fans .

This is something I've wondered. How long were Atem and Yugi together? Battle city doesn't seem to have taken more than two or three days. Same with everything else. But I think they were together for far longer, and I don't exactly trust that the movie's time of three years is right.

It's not explicitly stated in the manga or anime. Could be a couple of years or so depending on whether you mean the anime and the manga.

The anime has screwed up the timeline so bad that you really can't be sure of anything. The manga would tell us somewhere inbetween a year/two years or so (counting up from the events of the beginning of the manga, which probably took up most of the time.)

Also, just for information's sake, that line in the English movie wasn't uttered in the Japanese version of the film. Of course, the plots of both films were in drastically contrast to one another, but still.

I can't for the life of me remember where or when, but I think I've read an interview with Takahashi where he stated that all events of the Yugioh manga take place within one year. Not sure about it at all, though, so if I find a link, I'll post it.

The events of the DM anime last from 2-5 days each (Doma being the longest). The qeustion is, how much time passes between DK and BC, and from KCGP to Egypt. Doma is pretty much straight after Battle City. As for the manga, from what I can tell, everything after Death-T happens in the space of 8 months or so.

BTW, the movie isn't the only place the dub goes bananas with the timeline. At the begining of the Egypt arc, Tea says something about the Pharaoh remembering only 'the last couple of years,' aka, since Yugi put the puzzle together. Although, who knows, she might have meant something else, seeing as how the dub couldn't decide whether he remembers something, nothing or everything about his past >_>.

    Holy crap!

Yeah, I didn't forget about your question, Watson.

I was translating episode 24 (yes, despite the constant work on 5D's, I'm still doing other things) when I came across this line:

Anzu: "The other Yugi...the sharp-eyed Yugi, in order to win...would he!?"

Pretty sure this line is in the manga as well, but I'll check that later. But, it does seem that Anzu, at least, can tell the difference. I can probably elaborate more on this explanation once I gather some more examples, but this one just stuck out since I was doing it anyway.

Actually, I've been re-reading the first few volumes of the manga (courtesy of trying and failing to start a Shadi article on the wiki ), and I came across a few examples myself. There's one in chapter 20 at the end of the dark game with Shadi, when Anzu and Jonouchi first see Dark Yugi. Jonouchi says (paraphrasing) 'Yugi's face looked different before,' and Anzu says she saw it, too. And then there's some at the end of Death-T. First when Dark Yugi takes over for the match with Mokuba and Jou and Anzu go 'ZOMG, the other Yugi,' and later when he switches with Yugi, and Jonouchi comments how 'that guy changed back without even noticing' or something. Oh, and Honda also asks Jonouchi if he noticed something different about Yugi.

Although, the latter chapters make it blatantly obvious that not even Takahashi-sensei could make up his mind about whether anyone could tell the difference XD.

Also, as much as it rocks that you're subbing 5D's regularely, I'm glad to hear you're finding time to work on DM, as well .

Yeah, I figured the majority of it was from Death-T. There's also the Card Bomber and Love Detector (or whatever) chapters too. Then you have the battle with Bakura, but I'm pretty sure they ignored that as a dream (or maybe that was just in the anime...they really did a piss poor job trying to recreate those chapters and I just recently did it, so it's stuck in my mind...) However, by Battle City, I think the majority of the group knows that Yugi has two persona.

Oh, and thanks. I want to see if I can get DK all translated before June ends. Haven't touched a GX ep in ages...really would like to, but then I remember that I'm sort of in that slump of episodes where nothing particularly interesting happens. (Well, to me, anyway.)

I think the dream thing was anime-only. I distinctly remember a panel from Duelist 1 where everyone freaks out over Bakura still carrying the ring around, so they must have had some memory of the whole "WOE! Sealed into innanimate objects!" fiasco. But the manga/anime differences tend to #@%! with my brain, so I can't be sure.

(yay for retconned unfaithful transitions >_>)

Oh, right. That was Volume 8, if I remember correctly. And then the trend continues from that point on.

*Sigh* I really need to update this thing. It's been too long.

    Manga/anime differences ftl.

You know, sinceTakahashi went to such great lengths to reword apparently minor lines between Seto and Akhenaden in the Bunkoban volumes, I wouldn't be surprised if some of these lines about Dark Yugi are changed too. They are the definitive volumes after all, and since Mr. Takahashi re-read the entire series he probably would have noticed these things. He certainly noticed that the Dark R.P.G. made no sense and fixed that.

Dark Yugi has a line in chapter 2 about how his people used to use camel bones to play dice, I wonder if that stayed. It's a shame Cindy is the only one with every single volume, and comparing every volume of the Bunkobans with every volume of the Tankubons would be an ultimate pain.

I generally don't mind anime adaptations differing from the source material at some points, but only when, you know, those differences don't make the anime version of the events in question suck >_>. And somehow, in Yugioh, they almost always did.

Yeah, those early volumes could definately use some sorting out. Makes me wonder whether Grandpa's story about the Puzzle's origin in Volume 1 was retconned. Although I suppose you could write that one off as gramps trying to freak Yugi our for lulz or something.

And does anyone know wtf was up with those ankhs Yugi wore on his sleeves? They seem to vanish without a trace somewhere in Volume 2.

Pfft, you're too awesome, Cindy. Don't hurt yourself over it though (hurt someone else instead...). I doubt anything could be as epic as the Zorc edit anyway.

Remember in the Toei series, where they actually showed it being discovered? Makes me think, when an anime is being made of an unfinished series, do they actually think about upcoming events? I know 4Kids don't, but Toei seemed pretty shortsighted too. And you can't blame the fact that they knew they'd be cancelled, this was the first episode. There's another thing that's ftl.

They were cool, I want them back. Darn first two reprint covers, inexplicably using later costumes.

Vaguely. It's been a while since I watched the first series. Toei did so many wrong and stupid things that it really makes me wonder where all the praise for that series comes from ('LULZ! Closer to the manga! Blood and violence!'). Out of 27 episodes, 10 had nothing to do with the manga, and the rest were mostly rewritten into a cheap derivative of the manga games. I mean, it's one thing to make a filler when you don't have anything to adapt, but to just disregard a crapload of perfectly good chapters for no apparent reason is beyond me.

And there was one weird line from that Aileen episode where Yugi starts yapping about the origin of games and says that he has '5000 years of Egypt's knowlege.' Bleh.

Far be it from me to deny their coolness, but they just strike me as the sort of thing NAS was doing in DK, with Yugi's sneakers and shirt VS Dark Yugi's boot-pants and lack of shirt. In other words: :-/.

LOL (I have a few people in mind, too...)

Nothing really has been as epic as Zorc's edit, although I did just post a redo of a certain flashback (yes, I finally updated ^__^;; ).

My running theory is, attaching them was ruining Yuugi's uniform, and Gramps was threatening to whip some Yami no @$$ over new clothes bills. Why else would he have, like 3 outfits?

(The ankhs aren't edited out of the Bunkobans, BTW)

Sweet. That Shadi line makes a lot more sense, and I can't believe I didn't see the flashback edit coming. That destroys an incontinuity that has long since been explained by the fans as 'the Dark R.P.G. isn't an exact recreation of the real events'. I suppose what I'm interested in now is if Bobasa still says he's a servant of Shadi (since he turns out pretty much to be Shadi). It's not like Bobasa had a fat-man coffin next to the R.P.G. table like Yugi and all his friends. XD

Wow, this FAQ is amazingly done. Thank you so much for this.

I have a question about Bakura/Thief King Bakura.

I've read all of the Millenium World saga, and in it, we see a young Bakura witness the slaughter of Kul Elna and its this event that fuels his hatred for the Pharaoh and his desire for the powers of darkness.

Now given this knowledge, why does the anime, in episodes 215 to 218, say that Bakura IS Zorc himself? How is this possible? The manga shows Bakura as a child before he aquires the powers of darkness. Granted, when you do gain the power of Zorc, you do seem to gain some sort of connection with him, as shown by Dark Priest Akinadin, but...Bakura wasn't always just Zorc was he?

Do you think you could explain this Tatsunoboshi Horoko? I'd love to hear your thoughts. ^^

Well, to the knowledge I've gathered from the manga, Bakura is but a piece of Zork sealed in the Millennium Ring by Zork, the Dark Priest, before. And the Aknadin is also a part of Zork, the Dark Grand Priest. Zork the Dark Lord is another entity separate from the two and is the true form of Zork. This is the best of my knowledge, but there are still a lot of things concerning the Memory World Arc I have to add to this FAQ.

So who is Thief King Bakura...the boy who witnessed the slaughter of Kul Elna village and tried to kill the Pharaoh but got beat back and chased away by Obelisk?

I mean I know that Bakura houses a piece of Zorc within him, and is using Zorc's power, but...I'm just confused as to how the individual who was Bakura...can just end up being Zorc. XD

Did Bakura's original soul get so corrupted by Zorc that he just ended up being "absorbed" by Zorc?

Well, he does mention his "true identity is also Zork Necrophades," so he could be both. I remember a line in the manga that also says "If he [Thief King] dies, then I shouldn't be (/exist) here," so he could be both.

I also said that the Dark Priest sealed his soul in there. But I think it might be the Dark Lord, the true Zork, that did that.

Well, it could or couldn't be correct. Not sure what the Viz manga had. And I'm not exactly sure what the anime says (because they made some changes.) But once I get an all around consensus, I'll add a new portion to this FAQ.
