Thread: The Power of the Millennium Items

  1. Default The Power of the Millennium Items

I was having a discussion with a friend, and I was wondering what exactly are the powers of the 7 Millennium Items, and what exactly gives them the "powers of darkness?" And can the items be used only in a Game of Darkness or can they be used anytime? I'm mostly looking for information directly stated from the manga. Can anyone help me out?

One time, Bakura gave a penalty game to a teacher without playing any game.

Oh, an interesting topic! I'll try to answer what I can.

[...] and what exactly gives them the "powers of darkness?"
Hmm... I always thought the "powers of darkness" came from the sacrificed human souls and the dark magic used during the Items' creation. According to Isis (Battle 146), disasters were caused by evil monsters which lived in people's hearts. It was stated (Battle 308) that the ritual is used to create treasures which would allow the holders to obtain mysterious powers, an agreement between god and demon. I kind of thought that the "powers of darkness" is the monsters collected from people's hearts, but...

...Yeah, I'm not really sure either. To be honest, I haven't really seen this question asked/answered before, so I'd like to know the answer as well. :P

I was wondering what exactly are the powers of the 7 Millennium Items, and can the items be used only in a Game of Darkness or can they be used anytime?
I think they are used to initate Games of Darkness. To add further examples to the "anytime use" part, Pegasus punished Keith after his duel with Jonouchi. There was no Game of Darkness involved (unless Keith's duel counted as one already, but I don't think so), Pegasus simply jumped to the "Punishment Game" stage. (If that's possible?)

As for the Items, I'm only familiar with the Eye only, I'm afraid.

    The Eyes powers are:

    *Read people's minds.

*Trap people's souls in objects. (Stone tablet, TV, soul prison cards?) However, when Atem was ported into ancient Egypt, the Eye was used only to bring out the ka of the person, while the Rod was used to seal it inside a stone tablet.

*Grant the wearer's wish. This seems to be an one-time power, and is usually used when the person receives the Eye. This was observed twice, with Akunadin and Pegasus.

*It can probably influence the wearer. I don't really know about Akunadin's case, but (anime only) Pegasus was likely manipulated by the Eye during the God Cards' creation.

However, most Items can be used to deal a Punishment Game, or at least punish people to various degrees (Puzzle, Eye, Ring, Rod, Scales(?), maybe the Key as well, if you count destroying people's personalities) and they all seem to have a mind of their own to an extent. Pegasus confirmed the latter, and it's shown in the case of the Millennium Ring thief (Battle 132), where the Ring didn't accept him and burned him instead. It is also shown in the case of the Eye when it drew on the darkness in Pegasus' heart (namely, his wish), and showed him an illusion of Cyndia.

I'm not entirely sure about the whole "gather all seven items" part. If my knowledge is correct, in the Dark RPG, Zork could be summoned if all of them were placed back into the stone slab in which they fit in. They are also required for the Ceremonial Battle.

    I hope this helps. Alternately, if I got something wrong, corrections are welcome... because I'm not sure about a few things myself. ^^;

The Millennium Puzzle also has a power to grant the person who completes it a "wish." (Although, the rest of its specific powers are rather obscured, to the best of my knowledge.)

Bakura says something about the Millennium Items and the gathering of the remaining six back in the DDD arc (which I believe was swapped with that whole Malik-controlling-Keith-lawl-filler-sorta thing.) He also specifically mentions Kul Elna, too, if not mistaken.

Oh yeah, the Puzzle and the "wish" thing.

Concerning the Eye, I don't understand how Pegasus' Mind Scan was blocked by Yugi's friends. Power of Friendship, Because Plot Destiny Says So, or...?

Yeah, pretty much. Showing that their friendship can overcome anything, etc, etc.

A-ha. Well, it would make sense to be that simple, seeing how one of the major themes of the series is friendship. Thanks!

I always assumed the pealty game was for Keith cheatng in his duel against Jyonouchi. Pegasus mentions it before he penalty games Keith.

The powers of the Items seem to differ in Egypt and the stories setting. The eye extracts Ka, while the rod seals them. The scales alllow fusion and the puzzle bends the gods to the will of the pharoah, ect. ect.
