Thread: Why do you use "Atem"?

  1. Default Why do you use "Atem"?

It seems a lot of people refer to the other Yugi by his true name, Atem, all the time. Why is that? Do you just want to impress people that you're so knowledgable? I understand maybe it's easier to type and easier to understand over the internet than saying "Yugi" and "the other Yugi" all the time, but here are my reasons why I don't go around calling him "Atem" in normal conversation.

    1) It's confusing to people not familar with the last story arc. The other Yugi's original Egyptian name is not revealed until near the very end of the manga, so that's not what most people are probably used to him being called.

    2) It's a spoiler! The story point about Yugi's alter ego is that he's nameless. In the Memory World arc, finding the secret of the other Yugi's real name becomes a major plot point. People are spoiling by using it all the time.

    3) It's not naturally what people think of him. I'm willing to bet most people think of the name of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s main character as "Yugi," not "Atem." The other characters like Anzu and Jounouchi still call him Yugi even after they know his actual name. He'll always be "Yugi" to them because no matter what happened in his past life, he's created a new life for himself with new friendships and accomplishments since possessing Yugi's body. I think that's the impression the readers are suppose to have as well.

Well what do you guys think? Have you ever thought about this before?

I don't think it's showing off to point out that you've seen the end of the series this entire forum is based off. Yugioh finished a long time ago; the other Yugi's name is barely a spoiler anymore. 'Other Yugi' sounds cool, but it seems a bit outdated when we have his actual name.

I generally use 'Dark Yugi'. Anything but 'Yami' XD.

I use Atem because It's more simple to me to show the person which I'm talking: Yugi or Atem.

  4. Default Re: Why do you use "Atem"?

I think I mostly use Yugi when the context makes it clear which one I'm talking about. But I really don't see anything wrong with using Atem. It certainly beats Yami *cringe*

    "Pharoah Yami"....that was bad. xD

For the majority of the time, I just call him Yugi, with the occasional "Other Yugi" thrown in.
I tend to use "Atem" when talking about the character with others who are aware of the name.

Like Ryusaki mentioned, it might have to do with DM being over for awhile now, and people not caring that it is a spoiler.
Similarly to how everyone knows who dies in Final Fantasy 7 and Sheik's true identity in Zelda OoT.

I use "Dark Yugi" most of the time, I think I used Atem once or twice maybe. But usually I stick to "Dark Yugi". Even though he isn't... well... "evil", for that matter, especially post-Duelist Kingdom.

I use Atem because I love the name, especially when found out Atem means "divide god; god of light; god of good".

Well, personally I catch myself using much more "Dark Yugi" than "Atem", but I don't find anything wrong in using Dark Yugi's real name when we know it and when the DM series are over. After all Yugi and Atem are 2 different persons, no matter that almost till the end of DM both of them shared one name. So I think it's good somehow to differentiate them. And russ869, to be honest, I don't really understand why the fact that most people use the name "Atem" is bothering you. First - that's a matter of personal choice and second - "Atem" is very beautiful name.

I use both Yami Yugi and Atem, but I prefer Yami Yugi best.

I tend not to use Atem as i've always called him Yami Yugi. I guess i should use Atem with it being his true name.

For me Atem or even Atemu sounds a bit plain or too fangirlish(with the second).

I call him most of the time Dark Yugi or the Pharaoh or even go to Pharaon Atem(u) to sound more respecting to the character, but don't really like to use just Atem(u).

And Yami is a no-no for a long time for me now. I'm still trying to get that out of my system.

I use Atem only when talking about DM as it was in the past. If I was talking about something during the DM continuity, I would use Pharoah.

I know Atem was a spoiler at one point, but for people who followed the manga from the get-go, was him being a pharaoh ever really an unexpected twist? I recall knowing that factoid extremely early on when I was introduced to the series through the dub, and looking over the manga in the second chapter Yami (yeah, *******!), even mentions how they used dice in Egypt (I chalk this up to Takahashi not knowing where the series would go at that point, as is the case for most manga I have observed) so I really wonder if there was anyone who was actually surprised about finding that out.

Also, once again, Yami is the cool name for him. I kind of didn't like the manga giving him an official name, the nameless aspect of him was always something I liked, so **** that.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

  15. Default Re: Why do you use "Atem"?

I use "Atem" because it's an easy marker to tell the two apart--also because usually if I use "Atem," I'm referring to him post-Memory Arc. Prior to that time I use "YnYuugi," unless referring to him strictly in the past. I think wandering around saying he should be called "The Nameless Pharaoh" or "other Yuugi" is kind of pointless, really. If you're in fandom at this point, you probably know (especially if you got here via LittleKuriboh's Abridged Series, since he spoilered it at the end of his version of Season One), and if you don't, you've either been living under a rock or you know you'll find out eventually anyway.

Yeah, I can understand 'Dark Yugi.' And I would be inclined to use that too, except no one ever ever calls him that in the manga or anime. He's only called 'Yami Yuugi' in promotional material or episode summaries, like those on the back of the Japanese DVDs.

It's not. I was curious and I wanted to see what people think about this.

I get the feeling the line about playing with dice in Ancient Egypt is re-written in the Bunkoban version of the manga. It doesn't really made sense taking the rest of the series into account.

His name is pretty important closure for the series.

That's because it would be weird for most characters to refer to him as 'Dark Yugi'. Especially his friends.

Has anyone noticed a lot of elitism regarding the name "Yami" due to its dub origins (and used as an unofficial name for the Pharoah?)
Yeah I got in a mad fight with a washing machine.

Got this awesome scar to prove it!

It's probably because it's a name that encapsulates the carelessness of the dub. And it was even retconned in the dub, so it's not canon by any stretch.

Well, yeah, I thought it was stupid when used in the show itself.

But I think it's a perfectly acceptable fan-name that was catchy, plus I used it for like 8 years before he got his name. Don't see any reason why I can't still use it since everyone knows who it refers to.

  21. Default Re: Why do you use "Atem"?

I use Atem because that's his name. It's also shorter than "the Other Yugi" (everyone refers to him as this before they learned his name) and I hate the name "Yami" (<--blame the dub)
