Thread: 'JURA', or 'The References in GX'

  1. Default 'JURA', or 'The References in GX'

Seeing some of the comments about most of the non-dead GX topics being about, well, you know, I thought I'd try my hand at adding some variety, and maybe pointing out some of things GX referenced in its 180 episodes of...

...varying quality. You might learn something.

    - Scab Scar-Knight is pretty clearly based on an Evangelion Unit
    - I don't think it's a coincidence that we got Daitokuji when Fullmetal Alchemist was at the height of popularity
    - Neither is it a coincidence that the Shinigami spirit card looks like that guy from Bleach
    - Dr. Zweinstein's Brain Dragon is a boss from Konami's Xexex game
    - Obviously, Zweinstein himself is the second Einstein
    - The Duel Zombies arc referenced almost any zombie movie clich ever used (except the good ones)
    - Jim Crocodile Cook is pretty clearly the Crocodile Hunter
    - The Mr Ts carried pretty heavy Matrix references
    - Kenzan wore a t-shirt carrying the Jurassic Park logo (although instead it said 'Jura')

That's just a small selection to start us off, please go on and add your own finds. GX was full of references, and they often don't require much suspension of disbelief.

There was a movie in the 90's called "The Truman Show" that was pretty similar to "The Matrix", except "The Truman Show" was a comedy film I believe(though it wasn't parodying "The Matrix", or satrical). Interesting, huh?

Jun, Shoji and Chosaku are all named after a comedy trio named レツゴー三匹 (which they reference to in ep 12.)

Nice to have a non GX-bashing topic.

One I remember being quite neat is how Pot of Greed was used quite alot by Judai early on, but when it was banned irl it never appeared again. I thought that was a nice reference to the ban-list. They referenced the ban-list again in the duel with that Yami Impersonator irc, mentioning Envoy of the Beginning.

Also Chronos mentioned Audrey Hepburn in that one episode.

Was this a dub episode by any chance?

No. It was in the original.

I forgot which episode, but it was in the Zombie Arc. Chronos made a pun off of "odori" I believe.

    Ah, from episode 126:

DD's Blood Note was a pretty obvious little reference to Death Note.

Kenzan going for 100 Duel Disks, and Judai defeating him causing him to become his friend was meant to parody the story of Benkei, who also has a card named after him.

A few of Kabukid's cards referenced that story as well irc.

    Ah, from episode 126:
Ah, that must have been one of those weird things he says under his breath that I didn't pay attention to, then. ("オードリー・ヘップバーンは奇麗なノーネ")

EDIT: Wow, no, it wasn't. He said it really loud. Wonder why I didn't catch that the first time around. (Lol @ Jim's "TAKE IT EASY! 落ち着くんだ!!" btw)

Oh, here's a pretty exciting one that I myself just found out recently upon watching Season 4. O'Brien at one part is looking at a list of students that Trueman has defeated, including Ushio and many other "Season 0" characters that were Domino High School students.

Oddly enough, it seems weird they'd still be Domino High School students...

While GX was pretty awful as a series, it was a literal treasure trove of great references, lol.

Some more obvious ones would be Necro Darkman who was a reference to the Super Hero Spawn (much like Zombie before him.)

Jinzo appears in his coat and hat from DM again in the Jinzo episode, which originally was a clear reference to appearence of The Shadow. This was parodied much closer in DM because he even appeared on a bridge just like The Shadow did, lol. Comparison from a site: http://www.shadowsanctum.net/interac...Comparison.jpg

Jinzo itself is also a reference to Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid, all the way down to his signature coat, which Psycho Mantis is seen wearing in concept art.

Camilla's deck is full of Castlevania references, with Hellvania being a direct reference to the Castle itself. Vampire Genesis is supposed to represent the Demon form that Dracula always takes on in the Castlevania games after he's defeated as a vampire, with Vampire Lord itself playing the part of Dracula, lol.

Death Swordsman of Lithmus in Misawa's deck is a reference to the Litmus test in Chemistry, much like how his Hydrogeddon, Oxygedon, and Water Dragon along with Bonding H2O are an obvious reference to the molecular structure of water. His deck also contains numerous other references to scientific stuff, being that is was basically a science deck, lol.

Ayer's Rock Sunrise in Hayato's deck is a reference to Ayer's Rock, a large rock formation in Australia.

Judai's Black Panther Neospacian is a reference to the Black Panther monsters from Castlevania Symphony of the Night. The Black Panthers can also vanish and reform into a gelatinous ooze, kind of like a shadow, much like the GX Black Panther.

Napolean is a reference to Napolean Bonaparte, and his deck of toy soldier's represents the French Army. His key card, Toy Emperor, looks very akin to the real Napolean Bonaparte as well, and its support card The Emperor's Coronation references the fact that Napolean was made the King of France.

The episode where Hell Kaiser scales the snowy mountain in China to reach the hidden monastery of dueling martial artists atop it was a reference to Batman Begins. The fact that Hell Kaiser was now a vigilante dressed in black and forced to fight his old master was also a reference to this movie where Batman has to fight Ras Al Ghul, who trained him, in the end of the movie.

Door to Mirrorland in Alice's doll deck was a reference to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Alice herself, along with her cards Alice the Wandering Bisque Doll, and Ecila the Dainty Bisque Doll (lol, Ecila is just Alice backwards!) were also references to the titular character.

Gin Ryusei's entire deck is based on the Gradius series, and he's even seen playing Gradius at the beginning of the episode! xD

Rei Saotome was a reference to Ranma 1/2, where the main character Ranma Saotome, changes genders when splashed with water. Since Rei herself is in disguise as a male until revealed its obviously a nod to it.

Dr. Collector is a reference to Hannibal Lector, who was also a dangerous psychotic genius who was kept wrapped in a straight jacket. Dr. Collector's deck contains only female Spellcasters as a reference to Silence of the Lambs, where the killer (who was not Hannibal himself, although Hannibal is in the movie) only preys on females.

Parker's Bacchus card is based on the Greek god of wine, who was also known as Dionsys.

The Arcana Force cards and Saiou himself are heavy references to Lovecraftian mythos. The Wave of Light is very similar to the insane god Azathoth, who is also described as a formless white hole in space that causes madness and destruction throughout the universe. Saiou is much like the god Nyarlathotep, who was a servant of Azathoth, and was known to take the form of a well spoken man and gather many followers, creating cults and is said to possibly cause the end of the world.

Oh yeah. Also, the Duel Academia's reference sake is a mosque in Turkey, the Ayasofya. (Woot, go go Takahashi.) In addition, the Blue dorm takes after the Chteau de Chambord in France practically to the letter.

Yep, there really are a lot of references in GX. I love these kind of topics because, while I know most of the references, there are always more than I had no idea about. Like Rei, or Duel Academia being a mosque. And I never made that connection to Batman Begins before, lol.

Might as well mention one that everybody knows - the many, many references in the Destiny Heroes. Departedguy is most likely the Darkman, or possibly even the Invisible Man. The Clock Tower is clearly the Palace of Westminster. Doubleguy is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dreadguy is the Man in the Iron Mask. Diehardguy may just be a reference to the Die Hard movies, although in name only. Devilguy gives off vibes of Jack the Ripper, and perhaps even Mysterio. D-Time is a reference to the practice of fortune-telling using tea leaves, and so an equally fitting name would have been D-Leaves XD.

There's no doubt many more. The Destiny Heroes are all most likely references in some way or another. They started off British (except Diamondguy), but by the end they seemed to be pretty much whatever they wanted (see Discguy).

Darkness and his solar eclipse business is also similar to Evangelion's Instrumentality. Eva had a "Black Moon", which kind of reminded me of Darkness' eclipse thing behind him. Then there's Darkness trying to gather everyone's consciousness into one being which would be ideal for everyone.

And here's a comparison of End of Evangelion's poster and a scene from the Darkness episodes.

    Spoiler: Also...
Truman = Rei? There's a lot of both of them, anyway... XD Or Darkness = Giant Na... Wait, I won't go there. :x

Don't know how much of a reference this is, but Jun Manjoume is also the name of the main character from Ultra Q.

...That is stunningly accurate. Kudos to you, Takahashi.

I think there were a few references in the episode titles during Season 2, from what I read on ANN, but not having seen a few of the series they parody, I couldn't pick up on them. XD

But there was a Death Note reference in GX? I like.

The boss monster of the Inquisitor in 5D's looked very much like L. He even sat like L and held a black notebook in his hand. Not that that has anything to do with this. lol

Johan's Advanced Dark field card seemed to be a shout back to DOMA's Orichalcos. Hell, even the Duel between Diciple of Darkness Johan and Judai followed a simillar pattern to Yugi v. Dartz, where the main chasracter had a little spiritual vison of csorts, then destroyed the field card and then ended the duel a few turns later.

Speaking of Saiou, the way he shouted "ZA WARUDO" and the little forcefield it emitted reminded me ALOT of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's villain, Dio.

I believe Takahashi was inspired by JoJo in the first place actually.

Oh, and one of the Pro Duelists in Season 2 was based off Golgo 13.

The Mad Poet is reading these threads in all three forums and assuming that the 'references' in question are more about pop culture than being a phenomenal nerd of any other kind. =B

That being said, Fubuki's VA was also previously seen in the role of narrator in a series called Magical Arcade Fubuki, or somesuch. Delightful coincidence, I'm sure.

I used to have a pretty good handle on the Big Picture in life.

Then I got distracted by all the small shiny parts.

I am very sure that this is a complete coincidence, but Zweinstein is also the Dutch name for Hogwarts ^^

Also, I seem to recall Mr. T making an Alice in Wonderland reference in one episode, but I don't remember when exactly.

Saiou was just a big Dartz clone, with a little Malik thrown in, but I was refering to the structure of the duel against Yuhan and the duel against Dartz.

The duel between Judai and Yubel itself is also comparrable to Yugi vs. Dark Malik.

I strongly disagree. Judai vs. Yubel ended with Judai FUSING himself with Yubel to cure her sadness, while Yugi wanted to kill Dark Marik without killing Marik.

I really don't see how they're simmilar. Besides being big, season-ending duels.

I don't get how Saiou was like Dartz either....

I was actually talking about how the duel flowed up until that point, with Yubel and its forms acting as Ra, Rainbow Neos as Obelisk, and Neos as Black Magician.

Judai used his big god-like giant to battle Yubel, the character, who even fused with her card in the final form, but being forced to give up his god-like monster and summon his 2500 ATK ace.

Saiou and Dartz were both leaders of a cult bent on purifying the world by destroying it. In the end, boith of them were actually being possessed by the powers they displayed through their arcs.
