Thread: Does Yu-Gi-Oh! take place in Tokyo?

  1. #1

Default Does Yu-Gi-Oh! take place in Tokyo?

Volume 2, page 87 of the English manga says so...

One of Hirutani's goons says "We'll make them recognize us all over Tokyo."

Now, one could say "Waitaminute! How could it be in Tokyo when it's already established they are in Domino City!"

Well, to start with, Tokyo is not a city. It is a "Metropolis", a special prefecture. The eastern part of Tokyo is made up of the "23 special wards", which used to make up the City of Tokyo (which was scrapped in the 1940s after it was merged into the Tokyo Prefecture) - Western Tokyo includes cities, towns, and villages - essentially suburbs. Far Western Tokyo includes mountains. Also, some islands far off the coast of Japan are governed by Tokyo.

Horoko, what does the quote say in the Japanese volume?

I wish I still had that volume. (It's lost.)

Domino City (spelled 童実野町) could be somewhere around the Kansai reigon. It would certainly explain the character's dialects (with the exception of the characters such as Ryuzaki, Ryota, etc.) But (going truely by speculation since I can't find that volume), maybe that was just added in. Believe me, if I could find my Volume 2, I'd tell you (all I have now are some assorted volumes.)

Ah, just like I thought. So it was just Viz trying to fool the masses.

This isn't from the newly revamped books either - This is from the earlier works.

I'd still like to know what the Japanese passage says

BTW, Domino City is fictional. I was wondering if the author intended for it to be a fictional "Tokyo suburb" within the metropolis limits. I guess it was in no particular place.

I would think that most Japanese manga series take place in the Kanto area. I guess Viz assumed this was to take place in Kanto and slipped the Tokyo line in.

Also, the "町" in Domino city is usually rendered as town. Again, Tokyo does have towns within the prefectural limits, but the Japanese volumes suggest that Domino could be anywhere.

That basically is the Japanese passage.

Also, "町" can mean both "town" and "city." (It has the kun/on reading of "machi" and "chou".) Looking at Domino's size, it's obvious it's more of a city.

I've got the raws on my harddrive, and I singled out that panel:

Here is the transliterated text, along with my translation (differs slightly from Elf's):
城之内がオレのグループに入ってくれたのは大歓迎だな! (We've got to have a huge celebration, now that Jounouchi has joined my group!)
また昔みたいに暴れよーや!なあ!フフ (A riot, just like in the old times! Yeah! Heh heh)
とりあえずどのへんから勢力のばしますかね~ (And where should we extend our influence?)
    蛭谷さん… (Hirutani-san...)

I have no idea where you would fit 'Tokyo' in there. The kanji don't appear, and no mention of either Domino City nor any other city is made.

And I found another mention of Tokyo in the English-language manga.

Volume 3: Capsule Monster Chess - Page 4 (The page that introduces the characters)

The introduction paragraph starts as: "When an Egyptian museum exhibit came to Tokyo, an..."

I wonder what the Japanese Volume 3 states.

(NOTE: The English-language manga acknowledges actual locations as "Domino" this and "Domino" that, e.g. "Domino Museum", "Domino High School", and "Domino University" - Again, the English-language manga places Domino in Western Tokyo or a suburban prefecture in Kanto.

...Which is incorrect. It's just Viz spreading misinformation.

Really no different from 4Kids saying the dub takes place in America.

In my opinion, though, it's not as big of a deal as 4Kids changing the setting to the U.S. because:
    * This doesn't affect the plot in any meaningful way
    * In the end the characters and food are still Japanese
    * The whole "Tokyo" thing is only mentioned twice (so far) in the whole series
    * Domino as a place is still acknowledged

Also, I want to know what the character pages look like in the Japanese editions - Are the English character pages direct translations, or are they completely different?

Meh, I say it's like me calling Fukukoka "Kyushu".

As for your second question, I can tell you right now that they are completely different. I compared a few volumes just to be sure.

If someone has the Winny scans, they can (my volumes are already on death's door. I got them years ago and they've gone through some abuse.) I'm talking more about what's written than what is shown. If you're talking about what they look like, then no, they don't have any features missing. I think they even keep the furigana above "MAIN CAST" in them.

I didn't know which page you meant, so I uploaded both. In the future, could people please be the teensiest bit more specific (i.e. visually describe the page, give a panel number if it's specific dialog, etc.)?

    Douzo.

As for the 'VIZ randomly saying Tokyo', I have two theories:

    1) They're total screwups and can't decide whether to move the location to Tokyo or remain with Domino City, as in the original.
    2) This is some sort of conspiracy to confuse us.

A cursory Google search on the subject turns up no relevant information/speculation.

As I said earlier, it would actually make sense for Domino to be a part of Tokyo - Tokyo is NOT a city. It is a prefecture.

In fact, you gave me exactly what I wanted. Thank you so much! I'll send these to my cousins in Philadelphia (they own the English-languages volumes)

Huh? Actually most if not all of the character pages that I've seen are the same in English and Japanese.

I corrected myself in the corresponding post. My mind was still in the realm of "text" and not "visuals".

The U.S. Volumes 1-7 character page graphics are different visually.

VIZ ditches the Egyptian background for a blank background (since it is easier to read on a blank background) and the border is now a regular fade-in background. In the U.S. volumes, A white outline of Anzu's face is at the upper-left hand corner of page 5, while a white outline of Jonouchi's face is visible in the upper-right hand corner of page 4.

VIZ rearranged character images and used some different ones - Anzu and Honda have differing images (I can't imagine why they picked a different picture for Honda, since it looks so grainy). The kanji is rearranged, but without furigana (it's not like the furigana is needed, though)

Earlier printings mistakenly say that Anzu is Japanese for "Peach" - later printings correct this and say "Apricot"
