    Default A Short Interesting Read

At least it was to me:

    http://www.comixology.com/articles/6...-Edited-Before

Editor Jason Thompson talks about his work on the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga (among other things).

    I didn't know Yu-Jyo.net used to host Yugi/Jonouchi slash .

"This cross I've carried for so long... the cross of collectible-card gaming defeat!"

I'm not going to lie. That is a pretty bad change. It sort of ruins the whole dramatic impact of the scene.

The weird "Duelist-era" changes baffled me as well. Like "If you want to kill me...you have to kill the cards as well," or some of those odd-ball, descriptive insertions (like comparing Kuribohs to boils on Thousand Eyes Sacrifice's body and stuff like that.)

It's good to hear that he enjoyed working on the series, though.

Why do I find it so sad that I am far more interested in the Savage Love post he linked to?

Was it so wrong to change Kaiba's vengeful-rival line "This cross I've carried for so long...!" to "This cross I've carried for so long... the cross of collectible-card gaming defeat!"

    Yes.

"Clustering minds will now call upon"---bah, you get it. XD

Oh, I forgot to mention another odd-ball reference/change in my first post: Yugi calling Mai "Miss Shiranui." (LOL GET IT? LIKE THE BIG BREASTED VIDEO GAME CHARACTER OF A SIMILAR FIRST NAME? FUNNEY.) The random "Leave The Attack Name in Japanese For No Reason" thing he did for Flame Swordsman and Axe Raider kind of irked my nerves, too.

I donno, maybe it's because after 4Kids, everything seems better, but I can't really register any major complaints about the way Viz handled the manga. Sure, there's a lot to be desired, but even with all the name mix-ups and occasionally huge word baloons and weird translations and whatnot, it's still ok and manages to get the point across fairly well, unlike the anime. And it warms my heart to know this guy holds the series in such high regard.

Oh, of course, it's lightyears better than anything 4Kids can compulsorily pull out of their collective anuses, but it's just one of those "bitter old nerd" things for me, I guess.

JoJo's truly is the greatest of all shonen mangas, yay! Kakyoin ~<3

On an unrelated note, its nice to see he enjoyed YGO. Shame 4Kids had to destroy the anime and capture the manga in its slimy grasp or maybe we'd get an even better translation of it. I still can't help by shiver when I hear "Ishizu" or "Maximillion Pegasus J. Crawford."

Spoiler: Long-ass Jojo's Bizarre Adventure comment
The adaptation of Jojo's is actually pretty good. (Sans the unavoidable name changes--though, the new names do sort of throw a wrench of inconsistency into the cogs of the Capcom fighting game adaptation's translations, but, eh, can't be helped.) Dunno why they didn't go for 1 and 2 first, considering that after 3, everything else is pretty much non-doable (with copyrights for Stand names and Araki's refusal to let them change the names.)

But, anyway, I can totally appreciate anyone who has a love for what they do. And at least the guy admits there are some things he could have done differently, so at least he's humble unlike some people in similar positions.

Is it only me who sees his mention of Yu-Gi-Oh R as a hint that it may be being translated at the moment?

I wonder if there's any plans to translate R anyway. it just seems to have gotten lost in the tide of GX/5Ds. I actally like this guy for his effort at remaining solid to the story. Well, for the most part. I don't think it was necessary to put that collectible-card game bit into Kaiba's line. It just souded too silly.

Eh. I never liked the Viz translators. o_o

Like Sasuke's "Touch Me Not" Jutsu and Don Patch as Poppa Rocks. And Vegito as Vegerot.

    It's just that they sound weird and could've been better. o_o;

That was an interesting read. It's rare for us to hear an opinion on the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga from a third party since manga reviewers tend not to talk about it. Because they're jerks.

It's great to hear such passion and the fact that he's giving links to prominent Yu-Gi-Oh sites suggests that he did his research. I never had a problem with much of the dialogue in the Viz editions, my beef was with those damn Viz Boxes O' Doom, which I doubt were his department.

Overall, it's just nice to hear someone sing the praises of this wonderful manga. Great find, Watson.

That really was a good read, and I do like his humbleness and how he's a fan like the rest of us. Personally I've never had too much of a beef with YGO's manga translation, or for that matter Dragonball's or Uzumaki's (although I do think out of the three Uzumaki suffered the most). I think it's a mixture of what Dr. Watson said and that the translations really not being that bad.

After eating human waste for 2 years in YGO, a box of ritz crackers is gonna taste damn good. Hence Viz's translation being quite enjoyable. ^_^ So thank you Viz, I really appreciate it.

I actually lol'd at the change 'This cross I've carried for so long... the cross of collectible-card gaming defeat!'.

Viz, I thouhgt, did a pretty good a enjoyable job of Yu-Gi-Oh! and I liked collecting it a lot.

We never got stuff like Tsunade's "Private Potion' or Rock Lee 'Going Loopy' like they did for Naruto.
