    Default 5D's Screenwriter Index

    Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Screenwriter Index

    Duel Monsters | GX | 5D's | ZeXal

Just as there is a specific animation team working on an episode, there's a specific writer (sometimes more than one) working on the script. Their names are listed as "Script / Screenplay" (脚本 kyakuhon) in the credits for each episode. The 10th Anniversary Animation Book and the episode opening credits also specify the writers responsible for the series layout.

Upon watching a really awesome / okay / absolutely horrible episode, you might start wondering who penned the script. Or, let's say you are watching an episode and you start wondering why the plot devices or the Tropes are so similar to another episode. Certain writers like to recycle the same concepts, so comparing the episodes' writers may help shed light on the mystery. It also helps avoiding misblaming a certain writer (or writers) for a certain arc, for example, as no arc was written exclusively by only one writer.

The episodes are listed by arcs as stated in the Animation Book. Where no arc name is available, unofficial (ie. Fanon) arc names may be used. Such arc names are marked by an asterisk (*).

Every writer is Color Coded For Your Convenience so you can pick them out more easily. I tried to pick colors to be viewable with both forum skins.

I do notice Yoshida, despite misblame on him to a point, however does sort of garner his reputation from these three topics somewhat deservedly. He does seem to get the job, for the most part, doing the show's biggest information/emotional impact wham episodes, specifically in 5D's with starting at the late Fortune Cup.

Indeed. I was surprised/shocked to see how the episodes came out, and now I feel rather bad for badmouthing Yoshida recently, as well as spreading incorrect information. Attributing him to an entire arc or series (especially just going by Wikipedia) is just pulling a Scapegoat Creator. Dx I'm hoping making these threads somewhat make up for my misblamings. And, well, correct everyone else who thought along the same lines. It's good to know the actual facts.

The general look of it to me is with 5D's, is that the Fortune Cup Arc was Atsuhiro Tomioka's job to set up and give a base line it looks to me, of the show's feel/basic mythology. And then the major beat episodes were given over to Yoshida, with Koji Ueda and Yasuyuki Suzuki working alongside him, with some help from Yoshifumi for this recent arc.

Though I'll bring up a previous point I've made: Yoshida seems to be very hate/like with, if he is running the overall scenario of the Emperors, the major plot beats he chooses to show. He seems to be quite a fan of softer/more surreal Sci-Fi / Fantasy then the basis Atsuhiro set up early on. (Then again, he didn't set up much besides: EVIL NAZCA GODS, MAGIC ARM MARKS, WEIRD ANCIENT CULT, and it looks then the show as given over to Yoshida for Compsition. Would it be possible to ask for specific sections these Series Compsitions consisted of if your sources list them, Arynis?).

Also if it'll help, I'll try to keep an English List of credits for Writer stuff and the like from now on if mrghost, myself, or another member can find summaries of episodes that list them, alright?

Yeah, it seems Yoshida's production does seem to be a case of love or hate. I mean, he did give us episode 57, which was considered by many to be one of the finest episodes, but the current season's direction could be a case of Your Mileage May Vary for many. It's still early to make a conclusion on that, I guess, especially with all the plot threads and Chekhov's Guns. (It could still turn out to be awesome. On the other hand, it could result in something Wall Banger worthy, too.) He certainly loves expanding on the card game's / the YGOverse's mystical aspects, though.

The Animation Book doesn't list anything besides "Series Composition: [Name] [Name] etc.". Nothing specific about their roles, either. Wikipedia does seem to state from where the Series Composition position shifted over (eg. for 5D's: Atsuhiro Tomioka 1-26 --> Shin Yoshida 27-present), but I don't know if there's an actual official source for it.

    And sure thing!

    Thanks heaps for the summary.

I personally am clueless to who the animators and writers are. Now, something to read when I'm bored, and to fill in on some knowledge...

    You are welcome, Hybrid Dragoness!

Actually, I don't think most people are familiar with the writers except Yoshida Shin, whose name popped up the most during such discussion.

As for the animators, Hara is the most well known because of his/her excellent animation, and a few other are known for their QUALITY productions.

Ah, I see. Well, I guess this thread gives us fans quite a bit to talk about.

I've heard of Hara. I've also been told by someone else he/she creates good quality stuff.

That's right! I'm planning to put up a profile of every writer eventually, or at least list other series they worked on.

Yeah, Hara is known as one of the best animator directors, if not the best.

That it was. Usually, the same writer is responsible for multiple part episodes, but it's not always the case. (Eg. Dark Yugi vs Dark Marik in the Battle City Finals had writers switching every episode.)

Lol, Shin Yoshida leads with only 1 episode to Yasuyuki Suzuki in 5D'S, unlike in the DM snd GX series. I guess his activity and participation in creating the scripts diminishes with each series.

Yoshida is he head director for episode 27 and on. Of course he doesn't do ALL of the episodes individualy, but he is the one in charge for the overall plot progression. It's kind of like with the animation team. Hara heads the team, so he's the one credited for the episode. Sure, we know "team Hara" did the episode, but rather than search for the names of everyone on the team, it's just much easier to say Hara.

If GX is anything to go by, I'd say Shin Yoshida does a good job on episodes of importance, but I wouldn't ever trust the overall plot to him. I mean, Yusei vs. Kiryu 1 was one of the best duels in the episode, and look at which one he did. The episode where Rally and co start throwing cards around and get naked. He doesn't balance comedy and seriousness very well, imo.

Personally, I think Atsuhiro Tomioka had a better grasp on what Yu-Gi-Oh! was intended to be, well, Yu-Gi-Oh! with card games anyway. lol

Nice work posting these three threads, Arynis. I agree, it seems Yoshida should get more credit than badmouthing, judging from this, but since he's the head writer now, I'd suppose it's easier to blame him for the direction of plot lately. I did like the episodes Atsuhiro worked on, though. Things seemed more balanced back then, giving 5D's a mix of a bit of a darker theme with the usual card games on motorcycles/standing card game shenanigans, as well as the focus on mythology and everything that got me hooked on the series.

@Jake759: Yeah, that's how I got the idea myself. And banners would be great! Thanks!

@Lil_Yugi: *nods* But I'm wondering, is there any confirmation on that besides Wikipedia? (Or alternately: Where did you get your information from?) Not that I don't trust the Japanese, it's just odd that there's no page or description or whatsoever on the head writer switch. Or if there is, I haven't heard of it yet.

I'm sorry if I seem too nitpicky, I'm just curious about this whole series composition thing.

@Lance: Indeed. It's also true that Tomioka's episodes had a different feel to it as well.

By the way, does anyone have writer description suggestions? I could write for Yoshida at most, I can't say I'd be able to write anything else about the other writers other than the other works they ever worked on.

I got my information from some stuff Horoko said in passing somewhere here. I just kind of went with it, since he's "the YGO guy". If you want official confirmation, maybe he would know. lol

EDIT: One thing I would like to know is why exactly Tomioka left. Did he quit? Get fired? Something come up?

Actually, I noticed as I was watching today's episode that the opening credits actually list who is responsible for the series layout... So that's how Horoko knew, probably. Lol, I feel so silly now for not noticing it before. XD I checked the openings of episode 26 and 27, and yes, it's indeed Tomioka -> Yoshida.

But that means I can look up the exact information for the other series as well.

EDIT: Finally updated the DM and GX posts.

What the hell, forum. It appears a large bulk of my main post vanished shortly after adding the screenwriters for 127, 128, 129 and 130, only to be replaced with %a. I sure as hell did not make that edit. (Illiaster, get out of the forums! Or the time cracks, for that matter...)

Thank goodness for edit history. Having to recheck every single writer again would have driven me nuts. Anyway, it's restored.

I removed the Writer Profile section, though. That idea didn't really go anywhere in the end, heh.

Oh, so it's a bug or something? Well, damn. Better back up my posts from now on. XD

I will so do that. Thanks for the advice, Jake.

Ah. This is the first time I saw this happen, which is why I was so baffled. Though, that means I should watch out for my other topics as well.

At least we can rely on the edit history which I almost never use myself in case we mess up a copy/backup attempt. XD

Right, so we finally hit the end of the WRGP arc. The 10th Anniversary Animation Book designated the WRGP arc starting from Episode 065, and by this logic, it can be assumed that the WRGP arc ends with, well, the end of the WRGP. The question is, should 137 be listed as the next arc or the final episode of the WRGP arc? Or, the WRGP concludes with Aporia's defeat in 136, with 137 being the prelude to the new arc.

Ark suggested me that splitting with 137 is the best way to separate these arcs, so that is how I will go with this.

Also, we need a name for the new arc, but I think Zone / Ark Cradle is a fitting one.

But yeah. WRGP arc. Depending on how we count, it clocks at 71 or 72 episodes, making it the longest arc in the franchise. Battle City from DM comes second with 66 episodes.

Did not know that, but it seems Yoshida was in charge of all the major episodes in the Fortuen Cup, like the Bomber Duel, and the Finale Duel, and the Lockdown Duel. So basically the Pokemon guy did the light heart episodes of the Fortune Cup.

Just to note though, that the screenwriter role means they write down the dialogue for most part, while working together with the episode director and the series compositor/structure person and the main supervisor.

So there were episodes which were worked on by Tomioka himself mainly, along with the episode director. The ones Yoshida and the others worked on were possibly under Tomioka's supervision and with the episode director while they lay down the dialogue. All of this, I assume, being supervised/directed by Katsumi Ono.

None of the Screenwriter threads are stickied, actually.

    ...Was I supposed to go request a sticky? ^_^;

    Ah, thank you Geno! ^^

I have been thinking about this for a while now, might as well bring it up. I was considering expanding the information, such as listing overall staff for each series (although the Janime Wiki has it), and expanded staff info for each episode, such as storyboard and director roles, not just the screenwriters.

Would be there any demand for expanded episode staff info? I wouldn't mind hunting down the information for every episode when I have free time to do so.

The list has been finalized, now that we know the screenwriters for every episode.
