    Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Screenwriter Index

    Duel Monsters | GX | 5D's | ZeXal

Just as there is a specific animation team working on an episode, there's a specific writer (sometimes more than one) working on the script. Their names are listed as "Script / Screenplay" (脚本 kyakuhon) in the credits for each episode. The 10th Anniversary Animation Book and the episode opening credits also specify the writers responsible for the series layout.

Upon watching a really awesome / okay / absolutely horrible episode, you might start wondering who penned the script. Or, let's say you are watching an episode and you start wondering why the plot devices or the Tropes are so similar to another episode. Certain writers like to recycle the same concepts, so comparing the episodes' writers may help shed light on the mystery. It also helps avoiding misblaming a certain writer (or writers) for a certain arc, for example, as no arc was written exclusively by only one writer.

The episodes are listed by arcs as stated in the Animation Book. Where no arc name is available, unofficial (ie. Fanon) arc names may be used. Such arc names are marked by an asterisk (*).

Every writer is Color Coded For Your Convenience so you can pick them out more easily. I tried to pick colors to be viewable with both forum skins.

The scripts for each episode are as much important as the animation itself. The words are significant for each scene, and even more - they identify the characters' nature.
Wonderful and very useful thread Arynis! Congratilations!

    Thank you Lia! =D

To be honest, I was quite surprised that Shin Yoshida did only half of the Doma arc (roughly), contrary to the Japanese Wikipedia claiming he did the whole arc. He may have been the head writer of it, though. (That wasn't actually stated anywhere, was it?) But still, there's quite a difference from what we may have known.

EDIT: The four writers listed in the Animation Book were also the ones with the highest episode count. It still makes me wonder if they are also the head writers, or listed because of their episode count?

Nevermind, I forgot they were listed under "Series Composition".

It's always better to have the real facts. At least now we'll know which exactly writer to thank for the really epic dialogues that were accompanied by some really epic scenes. x) Many of the DM characters (and not only) became memorable because of their words after all. That's why I sincerely admire this thread. Thank you for making it.

Indeed! And you are welcome, I am glad you like the thread!

I'm working on the GX version as I am writing this. Should be done in a few hours.

All projects started for one of the series should be done for the other 2 too, shouldn't they? xD (whenever we have enough info to work with) Then again - congratilations for the wonderful thread. I love when we start that sort of useful YGO projects. x)

For me at least this is a bit more useful than the animators thread.
The other thread kinda confuses me. And I think it only really matters mostly for DM, cuz of its memetic animation some episodes have and made us laugh many times in the MAD videos and such.
And maybe 5D's season 3 animation.

This thread is worthy for a sticky.

This thread is great! All my congratulations Arynis!

We have the name of each person, for each episode, who has think each dialogue. It's pretty interesting! To be scripter isn't easy, he must think to each character and his/her specificity.

I'm surprising there two scripters for episodes, 99, 124 and 154. I'm amazing there two scripters for the duel Yugi vs Marik even If they alternate one episode both. It must be difficult to write a part of several episodes when it had been already started by another scrpiter. I think there just one person, like Yoshida Shin who had written the duel against Dartz. I didn't know he had also written episodes 222 to 224!

And I'm not so surprised by his "absence" in the KC Grand Prix arc.

Very interesting, Arynis. Thank you. It's quite hard to judge who's the best writer as far as I can see, considering DM writers were simply able to often copy the manga dialogue for much of certain arcs. And 50% of filler dialogue was Anzu saying "Yugi!". However, Atsushi Maekawa seems to have a reasonably good track record.

Shin Yoshida has written a heck of a lot of YGO anime episodes. Junki Takegami, whether he was actually in charge of the changes or not, seems to have a penchant for changing things around from the manga and adding stuff in.

Ditto Masashi Sogo. He wrote some of Duelist Kingdom's most altered parts - Yugi vs "Gay Clown" instead of the Puppeteer, Mai vs Anzu (not in the manga), freaking episode 28 (climbing a tower in the most Fridge Logic-ey way, wine illusion floor and robed people army with lots of Evangelion level religious symbolism, WTF?), Yugi vs Jonouchi (as they decided not to fight in the manga) and Yugi vs Rebecca. Hmm...

...Oh, and shirtless Seto and Atem.

Also, reposting to avoid double posting: Series Layout information has been updated. Now each writer has their respective episodes listed.
