Default Stupid Anime Details: Duelist Kingdom

Since I've been translating DK for a while now (currently finished 15, starting on 16, but have 19 - 25 done...umm, don't ask,) there have been some fair share of weird things I've noticed over the course of my watching/interpretation experience. Some things that were different in the manga and some that...just didn't make a lot of sense.

    - Pegasus' unnecessarily long staircase: In the manga, the staircase is long, but it's a straight staircase going up. In the anime, it spans 50 feet and has two spots where it changes direction. Any reason for this? No. Important? Not really. Weird? Yeah, it's pretty weird.

    - Kaiba Corporation's key: Making it a card is well and good, but couldn't Pegasus, you know, read Mokuba's mind and get it that way? It made more sense in the manga where Mokuba ate the key with the only recourse of getting out being...well, you know...But, in the anime, the logic is sort of flawed.

    - Random Player Killer changes: Yeah...turning a ventriloquist into a clown, Player Killer of Darkness into a pyro, and changing around the key thing with the Meikyu Brothers (thus making the two doors on the Duel Ring inherently useless.)

Then, there are other random things like how in ep 16, Kaiba pictures Mokuba in his Soul Prison card when he doesn't even know what that even is until ep 22. Or how Saruwatari leads Kaiba halfway down a basement corridor just to push an indistinguishable stone panel.

But, anyway, does anyone else have any of these kind of oddities from DK they want to share (or discuss any of the ones I listed)? I just addressed these because they are fresh in my head at the moment, but there are others, I'm sure.

This is...the best thread ever. I've got some.

    - Turning Dark Yugi's two manga penalty games into Mind Crushes. Heck, there was even a third Mind Crush which leads to:

    - Addition of the random perverted gym teacher who blackmails Anzu. Yugi played a really quick game of 'draw the stronger monster' which was really an excuse to give him a Mind Crush. Not in the manga.

    - Killing Ryuzaki's Dinosaurs so that Red Eyes is his only card on the field and giving it Dark Dragon Nails. Seriously, it looked much cooler in the manga when Time Wizard turned Ryuzaki's field into a fossil bed. Not to mention the whole Honda sublot they added along with Evil Night Dragon, but I don't have much of a problem with that.

    - Honda getting into a suit of armour in a few seconds. I call bullcrap on that, anime.

    - Kaiba's secret lair with talking computer. I tell you, the manga's version of events where Blue Eyes stops attacking because Kaiba just came out of his coma was a million times better than that melting Blue Eyes virus rubbish.

    - Addition of Yugi versus Jonouchi duel. The manga offered a much cleverer explanation as to why they agreed not to duel, it was really just an excuse for the anime to show off cards.

    - Honda, Bakura and Anzu go on an adventure into Pegasus's chamber and see a weird Game of Darkness. I'll admit, the soul prison cards on the crosses and the church bells were pretty cool.

  3. Default Re: Stupid Anime Details: Duelist Kingdom

Ooo, what a lovely thread. Lord knows there's enough of these quirks to go around, but here's just a few off the top of my head:

-Replacing the penalty game Pegasus gave to Keith with the trap door that looks like something Wylie Coyote would think of. Even with Pegasus's obsession with American toons, wtf?

-The ridiculous height and clothing difference between Yugi and Dark Yugi. I mean, seriously, the clothes thing is just too dumb.

-The Honda-throws-away-the-ring subplot and Bakura's introduction in general. Most of it made no sense whatsoever.

-Duel rings popping up from the ground. Stupid and unnecessary.

Not to mention that it sort of cheapened their whole quest to duel each other in Battle City.

While I'm here, I might as well address one that totally slipped my mind:

Why, oh why, did they take my favorite scene out of the anime? Instead of what was in the manga, we instead got Kaiba karate chopping random guards unconscious as he traverses blindly through the basement of Pegasus' castle like some sort of super spy.

In the manga, Kaiba walked right up to Pegasus' castle, looked Crockets straight in the eye and busted that f***er in the face with his duralumin case and then proceeded to kick even more ass until he got to speak with Pegasus.

-Kind of goes with what Dr. Watson said, Bakura's Ring being throw out and just reappearing was a bad plothole

    - Kaiba is able to stop a gun with a card bugged me out

    - Kaiba also can climb up a steep cliff while holding a briefcase

    - Bandit Keith's gang (of 3 people) is able to move a boulder to seal the cave, but Yugi's group (of 5 people) cant move it an inch, total BS

Hmm, well, the card-blocking-the-gun-trigger was in the manga, but it was used on a revolver--and Kaiba then used that revolver instead of going all Bruce Wayne. I always found that scene cool, though.

No fault with the second one. That was just insane.

To give the third one credit, imagine sticking your finger in a bottle with a small hole. Now, imagine trying to get your finger out. It's a tad bit harder, isn't it? (Plus, Bakura didn't help in the anime. Lazy pillock.)

Aww man, yeah. He had Crockett's head in the briefcase and was threatening to snap his neck. As if the gun wasn't a threat enough. The scene in the helicopter was great too. Not quite sure why the guards felt the need to fly in circles before they killed Kaiba though.

Actually, that was in the manag too. And boy was it badass. He snaps the guy's finger, utters a classic Kaiba quote ("You made me damage a rare card!"), kicks everyone off the helicopter into the sea and proceeds to fly to Duelist kingdom himself.

And he was able to sneak up on the guard and knock him unconscious without him noticing until the last second, how can he not hear him?

Something else I thought of, the Yami no Game between Bakura and Pegasus is bullcrap, from what I have read on another source, Bakura simply kills Pegasus and takes the Eye.

The changes and extensions in the anime version of the series have always bugged me a lot. It ruins a lot of the flow the manga built and some of the unnecessary scene edits and changes were really grating. The player killer edits in particular were just weird.

The ventriloquist was an interesting villain, but they replaced him with that weird gay clown impersonating Kaiba. The evil Kaiba puppet was just so much better!

Almost all of the ones listed here were on my mind when reading through this thread, so it saves me the trouble of posting them, but I must say...wow, ridiculous differences. Here's a few anyway...

    - That odd and out of place duel with Bakura to cover up the fact the anime skipped the DRPG.

    - Yami Bakura doesn't appear to try and figure out the Meikyuu puzzle.

    - Anzu dueling Mai because Yugi wouldn't accept her chips? Lame, even where fillers stand.

Here's a truly odd one I saw whilst in the beginning of ep 16.

In the anime, the Big Five informs Pegasus that Kaiba is heading towards the island and that they'll see to dealing with him, saying he'll never reach the island. Pegasus interjects and says that won't be necessary since the deal will go through once he beats Yugi and that they'll soon have everything Kaiba Corporation has to offer, blah, blah, blah, can't wait to see Kaiba-boy, etc, etc.

In the manga, Crockets informs Pegasus about Kaiba heading towards the island after the men who infiltrated Kaiba Manor contacted him. The Big Five thinks this throws a cog in the works but Pegasus disagrees and tells them once he beats Yugi, the contract goes through and they'll have Kaiba Corp and proceeds to tell them he's seeing to dealing with him, saying he'll never reach the island.

What the hell? What was the reason in flipping this around? They made it seem like Pegasus was more in control of things than he actually was.

Actually the very first Yugioh episode I saw was the Yugi vs. Bakura in Duelist Kingdom. It was pretty good back then, and I started to watch the series from the beginning. It was still a pretty good episode, but then I heard about the manga, which made a lot more sense in this plot(Table RPG). Ever since I read that manga part(couldn't find the whole version), I simply can't think the same way about that episode as before. Now I think it's just a LOL. (if anyone has that manga, PM me ^^)

    The fact that they removed the whole Kaiba-in-a-coma part of the manga, and they replaced it with the whole leaving-Mokuba-in-the-KC-tower-alone-for-some-friggin'-soulsearching really pissed me off, as it wasn't even a decent plothole, it watered down Kaiba's badass-ness in the Duelist Kingdom arc, and it involved gay clowns. >.>;;;

Continuing with Kaiba's entry to Pegasus' castle...

There was an almost priceless scene removed from the anime that was present in the manga. Kaiba with Croquet's head INSIDE the metal briefcase, with Kaiba's foot atop it while he aims the gun at Saruwatari. Wow, just wow. That scene was so magnificent and made Kaiba look SO awesome.

Another oddity was that in the manga, Kaiba met Pegasus in his office when Pegasus revealed Mokuba's soul was stolen and such. In the anime, he met him in the dungeon for some reason. Why in the world would Pegasus go meet Kaiba in a dark dungeon where his life is sure to be at risk? The anime seems to like making Pegasus feel more omnipotent than he originally was.

I believe I already spoke high praises of the first one.

And, yes, I was thinking the exact same thing. It was like, "Dude, didn't this guy just Judo chop several of your armed guards into submission? What's stopping him from beating in your face with his briefcase?"

    I guess I've noticed a few things.

-For starters, how come Bakura was inside with all the other duelists if he didn't have a duelist glove or star chips while Honda and Anzu had to hide outside. If he needed to sneak on, then he would have to have a reason to. If getting the eye was that reason, he would need to steal someones star chips to get to meet with Pegasus.

In the manga Yugi, Jounouchi, Honda, Anzu, and Bakura all stayed in the same room as most of the other players.

-There was a seemingly bottemless area around a duel arena during the finals. In addition, when Kaiba was about to duel Pegasus it moved like crazy and took him by surprize. Couldn't he have fallen off pretty easily since he was near the edge and it was moving fast.

In the Manga its was about a ten foot drop. I only have 1-4 and 8 of Duelist Kingdom so I don't know what it was like for Kaiba's duel.

There's two portions, actually. Kaiba and Pegasus' duel took place on the upper balcony area (and so does Yugi's duel with Pegasus.) The semifinals take place directly below in a Duel Table area.

Oh, and since you brought it up, wtf was up with Keith's magically appearing couch?

I think it's safe to say the Duel Rings in the anime are pretty ridiculous in general. Bursting out of the ground, hovering above bottomless pits...some are tricked out with flamethrowers. I much prefer Duel Boxes.

Eh, considering these chapters have been around for...what? 7-8 years in Japan and a couple of years over here, I don't think anyone's going to get too wound up. They're all aesthetic differences anyway, not really plot spoilers.

It wasn't magic. He just moved it there from another room. With his shades indoors and his big muscles for a card player, would you put it past him.

I didn't like the whole read from Pegasus dairy in place of getting the story straight from him. Like Jounouchi had said in the manga, Yugi could have given him a penalty game. With that as a threat he could easily gotten that information then and there. Like he did in the manga.

Ha, Yugi wasn't really threatening him, though. It was more like 'Imma gonna send you to hell anyways, so you might as well tell me what this whole shabang was really about.'

Another thing that bugged me was all the stuff they added to Shadi's intro, after Yugi saves him. And how Yugi just wandered into Dark Yugi's soul room every now and again for no adequately explored reason. 'O hai! Im in yer mindz nao.' What the hell?

  21. Default Re: Stupid Anime Details: Duelist Kingdom

Another oddity that I spotted, why does Pegasus (in the anime) turn Sugoroku into a card instead of trapping him into a tape like he did in the manga, it's a pointless change

Here's something else I noticed...In the manga, Duelist Kingdom appears to be much...shorter...and I mean, altogether...as an island.

In the anime, it apparently takes Kaiba several hours to traverse the forest to Pegasus' castle.

In the manga, it takes Kaiba a while, but not all that much time (it's 2:30 in the morning by the time he gets there.)

So, either Kaiba parked his helicopter a lot closer to the castle or Duelist Kingdom is gigantic in comparison to the manga version. (I mean, it would have to be! Where would they store all the Duel Rings!?)

I'm not that familiar with the manga sadly enough, but from what I do know, the entire Duelist Kingdom story arc in the anime was a strange mashup of what happened in the manga up to that point. However, I do know enough to be bugged by a few things:

    - Bakura. Or as I like to call him, Mr. Walking Plothole. I don't feel like I need to explain it anymore.

    - Kaiba was overfriendlified. Posts above me cover this well enough. DM rewrites it so Kaiba was never an insane loon who tried to kill Yugi and his friends and family because he couldn't beat him in a card game.

    - Jonouchi and Yugi's friendship is just something kinda taken for granted; the second episode's flashback of the original story made it seem like 'you took my millennium puzzle piece but i forgive you lol let's be buds' when it wasn't quite like that.

    - Flashbacks in general seemed to be pulled out the ass. "Let's play Strongest Duel Monster." :/

    - The whole Shadi-in-Yugi's-mind-room was a mashup of a manga storyline, yeah. What I want to know is, did Yami Yugi save Shadi like the Toei anime depicted? Because I found it annoying that Little Yugi saved him in DM.

Yeah, Toei pretty much got that one right. NAS picked a hell of a timing for Shadi's intro, too. The way they did it makes the whole find-my-soul-room the last Game of Darkness Yugi initiates, whereas in the manga, it was the one he played with the Player Killer of darkness, IIRC. Then again, they also removed Pegasus's speech about the evil presence in the Millennium Items and made Shadi seem like quite a friendly Egyptian chap who just happens to wander into people's brains. It amuses me how much Yugi-tachi disliked him in the manga up until half way through Memory World.

You guys have already posted most of the differences.

But one thing that hasn't been mentioned(that I'm sure most people already know about anyway) is how Pegasus went ahead and just killed Kieth with a Penalty Game. (well, until Yu-Gi-Oh! R anyway...) The anime just had him fall through a classic fake bottom and into the ocean so that they could use him as a part of the "Butcher Dungeon Dice arc" plan later. The battle stadiums were really weird to. It was never really explained how they went about finding these underground duel fields in the anime either. In the manga, there were just Duel Boxes. I really hate how they reduced Kaiba's coolness level to.

And Bakura's Dark Game with Yugi&friends was sort of a hint to how they would "Duel Monstrify" everything else not card game related in the series. But something in the manga that I thought was really cool was how Sugoroku was just trapped inside a video tape. Yugi could talk to him in his video camera and everything. I thought it was pretty neat. But the anime had to go and put him in one of those weird cards...

Kaiba's wierd behavior wasn't really elaborated that much on either. I guess its not entirely NASs fault though, as this was originally linked with the Death-T arc in the manga.

Yeah, Croquet in Briefcase was cool. "And since I took my cards out, you won't defile them when you fill it with your blood" (I only have german version of manga, so I have no idea how it's really said in english version)

Most of the stuff's been said.

But what about Keith's couch? What couch?

And they made Pegasus put Sugoroku into a card because they need to sell cards. XD

Before Jono's fight with Keith, Keith is lying on a magical couch that appeared out of nowhere. (Probably from Yugi's house, since it looks just like it.) In the manga, he was just sitting with his feet propped up on the Duel Table, showing off his bad-ass biker boots.

I wish they didn't switch from Duel Boxes in the manga, to Duel Stadiums in the anime. It made the manga more realistic and much closer to the actual game (despite having different rules, which the anime intepeted, badly).

I also found the "Bakura stealing Mokuba body sub-plot" to be pointless, other than to break away from the action. Anybody else think so?

I think that was a dub change. I think Bakura wanted the key for some reason I don't remember now.

Yeah, that was dub only. Although the original subplot was pretty damn useless, too.

Sorry, haven't seen orginal episode yet,

Anyways, to add to the dicussion. After I read the manga and watched some of the anime again, I felt like anime DK tried to mash together plots from the early manga with its own story. The entire first episode, Ushio flashbacks, Bakura's Shadow Game duel, and Shadi's introduction all felt uncomfortably inserted in.

Well, I, for one, could understand what they were trying to do, but it just seemed very...tame...in comparison to the manga. I think if they had made Shadi appear in a flashback for his appearance, it wouldn't have seemed as awkward as him popping from magic portals and Mind-Probing Yugi.

Here's another issue I've noticed: Harpy Lady's armor color. Is it black? Is it gold? It just seems to be whatever color it wants to be.

^ I understood why they did that, I just wished that they would have done the early arcs of the manga, so that the series would flow more smoothy and didn't need insertion of the plots of the early manga

If you mean Cyber Bondage, it seems that when there is a solo harpy lady, its purple, if harpy's sisters are on the field, its gold.

Actually, when dueling Anzu and dueling Yugi, it's randomly gold, which is why I posed that rhetorical question

The important reason for the Duel Boxes was that Kaiba hadn't invented the Solid Vision System that allowed for displaying monsters without a screen until the "Frisbee Duel Disk." Before that all the monster were 3-D images on the screen walls of the box (much like current hologram technology). The huge duel arenas clearly have volumetric displays, which shouldn't have even existed before the duel disk.

Think about it. When Yu-gi-oh!: Duel Monsters introduced the Solid Vision holograms, didn't it leave you wondering what was the difference?

  36. Default Re: Stupid Anime Details: Duelist Kingdom

Well the most important difference between one system and the other in both manga and anime is that with Duel Discs, you could duel anyplace (not just on secluded islands that have unreasonably large holo-emitters bursting from their perfect Wimbledon grass). And no Duel Disc=no Battle City=a lot of phail.

    And apparently, anime!Pegsy wanted a portable dead-wife-o-gram .

  37. Default Re: Stupid Anime Details: Duelist Kingdom

Russ869 makes a good point: when I first started the Battle City anime, my first thought was "Hey, the images made by these Duel Disks are just the same as the ones made by the Duel Rings. In fact, I think they're actually a bit worse..."

It was a much bigger leap in the manga, where we go from tiny little creatures in the Duel Boxes to life-size Solid Vision masterpieces of technology in Battle City. Which brings us, I think, to Stupid Anime Details: Battle City.

Well, let's not jump ship just yet, I still have a few more episodes of DK to go

Here's another thing that sort of bugged me: Brain Control. I found it hilarious that they made it so a brain controls the monster. (Even I could see that it's the hands controlling some random brain.) The fact that they actually made Brain Control a brain (sometimes with hands) is just...wow.

Also, I found it funny how eps 25 and 26 were the only ones with consistently good animation in all of Duelist Kingdom. (And what I mean by that is that the art stayed nice looking, not that the same animation team animated both episodes.) Saint Fire Giga sent chills down my spine at how awesomely epic it was

One thing I didn't like about Duelist Kingdom in the anime was how they changed when Honda decided to go out and search for Mokuba.

In the manga, it made total sense for Honda to decide to sneak around Pegasus's mansion AT NIGHT while everyone was sleeping...

But in the anime..in the MIDDLE of the final duel where Yugi was up against Pegasus...in the middle of the day..Honda gets the bright idea of trying to save Mokuba and Grandpa to "ease Yugi's burden." Even though its the middle of the day, and the Pegasus's goons would definitely be on heightened alert seeing as how their master is in the middle of a game.

Also, I can't stand how in the anime, Ryo Bakura is just essentially written out of the group. He goes from close friend and "part of the group" in the manga, to the "outsider." In the original manga, Ryo is part of the group shot of friends blocking out Pegasus's "Mind Scan" but in the anime..he is conveniently omitted. I have no idea why that happened.

That's just some of my pet peeves over it.

Actually, I'm glad you brought that up. Because the anime annoyed me with that whole "Let's go see if Pegasus is cheating yeah guys totally awesome" episode. Because they could have took that episode to do what they did later on.

You got to love how the anime made Keith a total kung-fu master and Jonouchi a total flake. Jonouchi had Keith crawling with his tail between his legs after he beat the snot out of him in the manga.

...is all I have to say about the level of manga!Jou's GAR. That the anime made him unable to beat the crap out of a p***y like Keith is a bloody disgrace. Then again, everyone had more GAR in the manga.

    Except Keith, apparently. XD

Did Jyonouchi actually flip Keith off in the original DK anime? He did in the manga, but I never got to see the Japanese DK anime.

Not DK, technically, but the slaughtering of D.D.D. really got on my nerves. Especially Otogi's "Even though I hate this guy, I'll give his favorite card super broken powers in my game! Hellz Yeah!"

    Puzz FTW!

Heh, fraid not. There was no flipping off at all in the anime, except for those times when a card is held behind their middle finger, of which 4Kids has actually recently started editing in an extra finger to make it look less suspicious (seriously).

I re-read manga DDD the other day. Absolutely kickass. In a perfect world, we'd get a special episode re-enacting the events faithfully to the manga, but this is Yu-Gi-Oh and we never get things like that. What, I just wanna see Honda's dog animated, alright... Also, the panel where Sugoroku hears Yugi complaining about the Kame Game store is absolutely lol.

Which meant that they also had to cut Keith pretending to be Jonouchi when a sleepy Yugi asks "who's there?" Keith slams him into the door. Little Yugi's another character who has less GAR in the manga, apparently...

I don't think so, sir. DDD alone is enough of a proof that his manga GARness >>> his anime GARness.

  45. Default Re: Stupid Anime Details: Duelist Kingdom

I suppose you're right. Anime Yugi was just better at not being hit. As for Dark Yugi, we all know how bad he was at not being hit. *hints at possible best moment of Doma*

Another stupid anime detail: Pegasus's death. Yeah. The reason why R can never have an anime, why the awful movie and large portions of the Doma arc were allowed to happen, why Dark Bakura's creepiest moment was massively toned-down for animation and why Ra returned for a highly underwhelming episode of GX. I love Pegasus: that's why the anime should have let him die.

A long time ago, I bought vol. 1-7 of Yu-Gi-Oh! and vol. 1 of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist (actually vol. 8), but I stopped when I found out Viz (the distributor in the U.S.) was getting a bit too heavy-handed with the edits/censorship. Reading this thread makes me want to go and buy the original Japanese manga.

It sounds like the differences between Kaiba in the manga and anime were due to an obligation to edit out the violence. I mean, based on what you are all describing, Kaiba sounds like a dark, dangerous, sexy individual in the manga, bashing in goons' faces and threatening to break their necks while he doesn't even break a sweat and his coat tails flap in the wind and he gives trademark cocky smile and says "Hmph." Yeah... *rawr...* Certainly they couldn't show that in the anime. It'd be too gruesome. In the stories prior to Duelist Kingdom, Dark Yugi seemed a lot more badass too.

But yeah... in keeping with the topic of this thread... I always did feel that Bakura was a bit out of place in Duelist Kingdom anime. (Not having read the relevant Duelist Kingdom manga chapters.) That duel he had with everyone and their favorite cards... ugh, why? It seemed like a mish-mash of the Monster World chapters from the manga. And his brief obsession with Mokuba... was this really needed? I think you've all already brought up the other reasons why Bakura is just kinda left out in DK.

BTW, I don't think that clown you're all talking about was really gay. I think that's just an Abridged Series thing. XD

I'd say people still call him the Abridged Series' gay clown name out of contempt for the fact that he replaced a much cooler manga Player Killer.
