Another stupid anime detail: Pegasus's death. Yeah. The reason why R can never have an anime, why the awful movie and large portions of the Doma arc were allowed to happen, why Dark Bakura's creepiest moment was massively toned-down for animation and why Ra returned for a highly underwhelming episode of GX. I love Pegasus: that's why the anime should have let him die.

I felt it was kinda sad that after Pegasus finally achieves understanding and regret for his past misdeeds, some albino madman comes in, yanks out his eye, and somehow kills him. Life is cruel.

I still can't wrap my mind around it. Was that goon in sunglasses just carrying his corpse, and didn't want to admit it? XD

And if Pegasus is dead, who's making new cards for Monsters & Wizards?! Is Yugi the CEO of Industrial Illusions now?!

I think that was only in the 4Kids dub. I don't remember Pegasus making any noise in the Japanese version, though of course I could be wrong (I haven't watched that episode in a while). What I think is really telling is that Bakura predicted death for Pegasus when he did that tarot-esque fortune telling.

Was this scene in the manga? Did Bakura predict Pegasus' future? Did Pegasus make a noise when he was carried away?

I think I'd personally go with whatever the manga hints at... dunno about Yu-Gi-Oh R either though, since that's not Takahashi's work.

In the Manga version of Jounouchi's duel with Esper Roba, Roba claims at one point that "I'm communicating with the spirit of Pegasus J. Crawford, the designer of Duel Monsters, who was tragically murdered a few months ago". I'd say that that's pretty decisive as to the fate of Pegasus, as it wouldn't work as a bluff unless Pegasus' death was common knowledge.

Whoa does he now? May I ask what chapter and stuff?

And granted one could say he *did* fake his death and disappeared but that is some strong hinting right there.

Going by how viz organized the manga, since I can't be bothered to convert it back over to the japanese organization, it was in chapter 97 in Duelist volume 11, just after Jounouchi drew Gracefule Dice.

I remember Viz took some liberties with that translation. It was supposed to be "the tragic Game Designer" which would still imply he's dead or deadish (hence why Roba is "channeling" his spirit,) but it's not as specific.

I surprised that they kept the scene with Bakura licking the eye sans blood. They didn't keep the flesh-eating bugs that were going to devour Mai in the manga, but then again the latter is more disturbing.

At the very least, Toei's lust for violence may have been enough to drive 4Kids away, although, the list of things in this thread would probably be MUCH longer. lol

The Toei anime was about as toned down as the DM anime was, only there was a bit more fist fighting. But the less talk about the Toei anime, the better. (I could start a other whole thread about what happened there that was infuriating at times.)

That's what I meant by violence, fist fighting, not the "Season Zero has teh uber insane YuGi!" violence.

...but, yes, back to the topic.

If Toei still had Yu-Gi-Oh every duel in the series would be composed of monsters with only one available animation movement rolling unconvincingly along the screen and breathing fire on each other. God Phoenix attacking Jonouchi would have looked like it was sitting on him repeatedly. Also, Alcatraz Duel Tower would turn out to be a hologram *reference to the stupidest, cheapest moment in Toei Death-T*

As I posted in the recent topic, I think R gives more than enough evidence for his death without brining graverobbing into the manga.

How about in DK the scene where they read Pegasus' diary, it shows Pegasus and Cyndia "In a chapel getting married".
Sure that might be like... symbolism but it makes people think that they actually both got married in a church alone in their regular clothes.

I'm really sad that Pegasus 'died' as well, but thats because Pegasus is dear on a personal level xD but thats a long story and definitely MY point of view is no reason to change the story. So.

Jokes aside, I really think Noa was a nod at the Toei series. But now that you mentioned it, yeah, almost all of the KC usurpers had green hair XD. It's a shame the Roba brothers weren't aware that they qualified for a much bigger role in the story.

The one with the watch was .. pointless .. Although first episode with the Cards deciding how far up you go was kinda cool.

But if Toei really still did the rest YGO. Ok, we might not have had Kazapon as Yuugi and Yami, but a hot sounding Megumi Ogata for Yami! Women can make good-sounding, hot guys XD Especially in japanese.

Well, Pegasus's involvement in D.D.D. was still a pretty dumb change, imo.

Just realised: anime Duelist Kingdom is responsible for the Blue-Eyes Blue Dragon. Even Toei had managed to get the colour right.

But didn't the Toei anime at one point literally call Blue Eyes the "Blue Eyes Dragon" instead of the "Blue Eyes White Dragon" ? =P

Hey, don't deny Toei their glory for the one time they used the right colour brush.

These things happen frequently throughout the series, don't they? Just off the top of my head, I remember that Mai's Shadow of Eyes had the green border and was played as a Magic Card. (Interestingly, 4Kids changed it to a purple trap card, but she still played it as a Magic Card. Okaaaay... weird.)

No, I mean that, even in the context of the manga (where Graverobber is still a Trap,) it's wrong. In that example, Seductive Shadow is a Magic card in the manga and thusly a Magic card in its part in the anime.

See? It's a different matter. It wasn't a matter of them changing stuff from the manga, it was a matter of whoever decided to do that not thinking on the straight and narrow.

Yeah that IS a big mistake. Considering even the real OCG card is a trap. But that maybe wont matter cuz the real version of that cards maybe was not out when this episodes premiered on TV.

Was Lightforce Sword(Hikari no Fūsatsuken) a magic card in the manga, IF it was shown there at all ?
Cuz it was used as a magic card in the anime but both in the dub and original its presented as a trap and its OCG version is of course a trap.

It was a Magic card in the manga. And I believe Yugi used it before his Draw Phase. (Of course, they were so busy stuffing Curse of Anubis/Pharaoh's Servant cards in that duel in the anime, they probably forgot to change the border like they did later on.)

I'm of the opinion that the Toei voices worked better when Yu-Gi-Oh was a series about kicking ass at games in general and not just Duel Monsters. I <3 Midorikawa too, but his "Horobi no BAAASUTO SUTORIIIIIMU" is just not the same as Kenjiro Tsuda's.

Toei voices were ok, but I think they lacked variety a little. Megumi Ogata kinda phailed as Yugi, IMO. Dark Yugi was alright (although I couldn't help going LOL Shinji the first time I heard it), but a tad psychotic, which probably wouldn't have worked later on in the story. Plus, the difference between their voices was over the top.

On topic, did anyone else think the duel between Anzu and Mai was really really cheesy and uneccessary? I mean Jesus Christ, the manga at least had some chapters that didn't involve solving life problems and psychological traumas with card games.

Agreed. It was like: "why are you two dueling again?" As far as I can work out, it was an excuse to show full-frontal nudity for anatomically-incorrect fairies. Seriously. Check out Friendship when it's been equipped with all Anzu's Magic cards. No wonder 4Kids gave it a dress.

Yep that episode, for me, even in the original was so dub like in the matter of plot. Its good that the BGMusic is alway great to make it not that noticeable.

Can I just reiterate how utterly retarded it was to make Yugi and Jonouchi battle in DK? I mean, really. They wasted two episodes showing a bunch of cards they both used already? Sheesh.

Oh, and in episode 35. Did anyone notice how Yugi got from down where the Duel Ring was, to the balcony, to behind the door he first came out of? Lol wut?

EDIT: 'Nother thing. How do you go to a top balcony to get a better view from where you're already at? This made sense in the manga since all duels proceeded on the floor and the final duel was on a Duel Stage up top, so they had to go up there to see anything. So, does this make Pegasus' castle infinitely tall as well? I guess it would have to if it houses a fuggin bottomless pit XD

I think it was just a filler.
But maybe they were just trying to show off a background story so people didn't get bored with the only dueling. And it get to show off 'powers' that the Sennen Items had.

And it looks that this "showing off of powers" of the M. Items wasn't enough so latter they made the Ancient Laser Beam Battle with Dark Bakura, XP.

Yep it makes sense now. Its the same stupid idea over and over again.

Hmm, I agree on the filler thing.

The only thing I could think of that scene was "See, this girl is somehow related to the game which I have created, which was based on ancient Egyptian magickz"... but still...

And as some of you mentioned it earlier, concerning the castle structure... It amused me for a while how fast did Pegasus get to his sanctuary, and Bakura catching up with him so quickly (despite he was like, the last person to leave that room/bridge... even if he had the Ring to show him the location of the Eye), then Crocketts and the guards getting to the place... before Yugi and co... Unless there was a time jump between the "Yugi's group leaving the duel platform" and "Yugi's group running on the castle walls torwards their destination" scenes. I guess the guards left as soon as they noticed Pegasus' disappearance, while it took a while for the group to notice, as they were celebrating Yugi's victory.

(Personally I consider both Episode 28 and 40 semi-Mind Screw episodes due to their "Wait, what was THAT supposed to be/mean/represent?" scenes...)

How in the hell did Bakura get from the main castle, the tower and back to the main castle all before anyone else did? Hm, maybe the Ring has magic "I can transport anywhere" powers like Shadi has? XD

Oh, and on a much more dorkier and self-indulgent note, I've officially translated all of DK. *Pities his own nerdiness* Well, with the exception of 28, since I found that episode just unbearable. (Well, beside the Blindfolded Tower Scaling part. That was gold.) And, well, you know, all those filler eps and DDM, but, yeah...filler.
