Maybe they've got the kanji wrong.

I hate the misconception that the King of Games (Yuugi-ou) and the Duel King (Kettou-ou/Dueru Kingu) are the same titles. Seriously, you wouldn't believe the amount of misconceived BS spawns from this alone.

That, and people reckon that the effects are wrong because they aren't the effects of the cards in real life. Most people haven't put the thought into realising that these cards were obviously written in the manga before they were released in the real card game. The only real cheating in Duelist Kingdom is stuff like Bandit Keith's wristband which holds hidden cards.

Horoko: As if you could hand out the title 'King of Games' simply by winning a card game tournament XD

Bad Rumour, I think, but nobody except Ka.. Ta .. uh .. Can't remember his name .. Kazuki Takahashi, that's him, knows if it's true.

Actually, I believe Takahashi stated that Yugi's father is often away on business, which is why he's never seen in the manga.

I wrote that because I never heard about Takahashi saying that. Was that an interview or on a page before the english manga? (in the german, they don't have that)

  13. Default Re: Yugioh Clichs, Misconceptions and Other Related Nonsense

Yeah, he said it in an interview for Shonen Jump:

SJ: Many readers have asked where Yugi's parents are. Does he live with his father and mother?
KT: Of course, his mother appears in one chapter in Volume Five. Yugi actually does have a father, but he's living away from his family on business. That's how it is for the time being, [laughs] But in the Egypt episodes there will be a lot revealed about Yami Yugi's father.

I think Ryuzaki sort of mentioned this a while back, but I'm feeling a bit repetitive today:

4Kids only made visual and/or plot edits to remove violence or sexual innuendo/The dub is a respectful and faithful representation of the original anime or manga.

I mention this because (like Ryuzaki said) this occurs a lot in the Abridged forums. It's kind of hard to argue with someone about the dub when you're arguing about almost entirely two different things.

I believe that in the manga, in the beginning of each volume (or right before the chapter starts in Shounen Jump) there's a character and plot description. They had to give him a placeholder name, so they chose Yami no Yugi- Dark Yugi. It just kind of evolved as a fan name from that, especially with the dub.

Yami no Yugi i understand i think even in the original anime was called once or twice like that. Maybe even in the manga. But Yami Yugi is more a dub/fan name so i got confused. I mean why is the creator using the dub/fan names XD.
They should have translated it Dark Yugi directly so that would be less confusing.

I've no idea, I copied that from a forum where the interview was posted. Unless I'm mistaken, the term Yami Yugi or Yami no Yugi is never used in the manga, or the anime.

I believe it's used once or twice as a way to refer to the other Yugi and was definitely used in the Summaries before each manga volume. The term in itself was used in books, guides, and whatnot way before the dub, but the dub was the first to use "Yami" instead of just saying "Dark." (For what reason, I will never know.)

Oh, and that interview came from a Shonen Jump issue. Therefore, they use dub/English-fanbase-based names.

Oh, I know it appeared in summaries and whatnot, but in the actual story, I've only occasionally seen stuff like 'Yugi's dark personality' or something, I don't remember anyone ever adressing him with the name. There was one Anzu line from Death-T, but I think Viz screwed up there and put Yami Yugi instead of the other Yugi.

The weird part is that 'Yami Yugi' is also the official dub name, when no one ever calls him anything other than 'Yami' or 'Pharaoh' (or in worst case scenario 'Yugi,' which by dub standards just about means they have no clue he even exists). It's as though 4Kids didn't even read the script, but just looked up what everyone calls him on the interwebz, instead.

Ah, where was that Death-T line? I'd like to see if it's in the original manga as well.

I don't get why a 3,000 year old Egyptian entity would have an inherently Japanese "name" in the first place. (Especially where, in the dub, he refers to himself as such. So he's an Egyptian entity, with not one--but two Japanese nicknames, and speaking English. I could make a grocery list on how f**ked up that truly is, but I don't think I will.)

And if you wanna take it further, he lives in a letterless town that can't decide whether it's on Japanese or American territory. I saw a funny pic on the subject a while ago that had Yugi in a nationality crisis as he's holding the Egyptian, American and Japanese flags going "Which am I?" XD.

The line is in chapter 40, just after Yugi defeats Kaiba (it goes something like "Yugi... no Yami Yugi, you're not weak anymore").

edit: Come to think of it, there's a possibility that I screwed up on that. It might be from a scanlation or something.

Seeing as this gives me an opportunity to dig out the manga after a long while, Viz's translation for Anzu's line around the end of the duel is this:

"Yugi... or is it the other Yugi?"

Ah, glad that was cleared up. I thought my rage towards Viz would have to go into Full-blown Nerd Mode.

Also, Abridged Series in general seem to drag in a lot of haters. Especially those who don't get satire...

    Abridged Series haters?
*Ok, admits,* I was one of them. But I decided to watch them since I saw quotes (Like how Kaiba climps up with a briefcase in his hand) and I became a fan.

But there are people that hate that stuff. Their buisness. as long as they don't shove it into our faces..

The problem is the Abridged Series is'nt very subtle most of the time. Allso it's spawned a lot of abnoxius memes* like the infamous Childrens Card Game.

Allso some people tend to bring it up whenever we talk about the actuel DM series. (I usaly stop bothering to try to disscus things then)

*A suprisingly large number of which are'nt actuely taken as they were intended.
Abridged Series quotes are not funny.

  30. Default Re: Yugioh Clichs, Misconceptions and Other Related Nonsense

Well, parodies are hardly ever subtle. And, seriously, the 4Kids dub is so bad, it's just asking for punishment. The only problems with TAS come from people who either don't have a sense of humor or those that refuse to realize it's, for the most part, a parody of the dub specifically. In other words, it's a good show that has a substantial amount of annoying fans. Kind of like Yugioh itself. I can't believe the number of people who've seen like 10 episodes of the show and felt qualified enough to write a gajillion OOC yaoi fanfics. Hell, Yugioh fanfics deserve a misconceptions thread of their own.

  31. Default Re: Yugioh Clichs, Misconceptions and Other Related Nonsense

To be honest I do'nt think it would be hard to pardoy the Dub without going completely over the top. (All you would need to do is make some of the voice acting* more over the top and some of the things said more cliche)

    * Though that would require a good array of voice mimicary which would be hard if the creater do's most of the voices himself.
Abridged Series quotes are not funny.

  32. Default Re: Yugioh Clichs, Misconceptions and Other Related Nonsense

What, doesn't he do a good enough job imitating most of the voices anyway? I think his Dark Yugi voice from the earlier episodes is vastly superior to Dan Green's. Then again, that's not exactly hard to accomplish...

As for the other thing, what makes TAS appealing to both fans and non-fans is that he mixes in all these other references into it. If he were just going by the show itself, I doubt it would be so popular outside the fandom.

I hear that. If anything, 4Kids' dialogue changes are worse than their visual edits/cuts. It's as if they run the original Japanese script through a machine that removes references, brand names and characters explaining themselves, then make the result as vague as possible.

    My made-up example line:
    Japanese:
"Say, Honda, where did you get that motorcyle?"
"I got it from the storehouse round on Wiggin Street. I get a lot of my gear from there."
    Dub:
"Tristan, we have to find Joey."
"That's right, Joey has to be found!"

The Abridged Series would have a lot less fuel for inconsistencies in the series if 4Kids actually read ahead in the Japanese scripts.

The Abridged Series is a great laugh, but I can't help but see the flaws in a whole forum dedicated to it... Amen on the 'good show', 'annoying fans' quote btw.

I can't even call that censoring. I honestly don't mind the visual edits that much. Sure, invisible guns were dumb as hell and I don't quite get the logic behind removing ENGLISH text and even numbers, but dialogue is what really pisses me off. Especially all the lame jokes they threw in there. There's only so much humor you can cram into a show that doesn't really have any humor in it, before it turns into some retarded wankfest where people pump out more inapropriate jokes than John Cleese did on Graham Chapman's funeral (only not nearly as funny).

    2. Plus, it's damn funny. (Episode 3 made me laugh out loud .. and that means something, people!)

There's only so much humor you can cram into a show that doesn't really have any humor in it, before it turns into some retarded wankfest where people pump out more inapropriate jokes than John Cleese did on Graham Chapman's funeral (only not nearly as funny).
Yes, 4Kids dialogue generally ruins everything, both in DM (where every plot becomes "save the world", "Joey" dreams of giant donuts and is "Da Godfaddah of Games", Kaiba is a giant prick even to his brother, who sometimes calls him "Kaiba" o_o).

Let's not talk about GX (where any opponent of Jaden magically becomes a jerk).

    mmm... more things

    - The Yugi’s hair does not change even if he is sleeping or swimming.
    - Yu Gi Oh! The Movie was made for 4Kids but still it has cut scenes that can be seen in the Japanese version.
    - Throwing cards to someone can injure considerably. (Kaiba and Mai know it best than anyone)
    - Rashid is an excellent tattoo maker if he made his tattoo in his face himself.
    - Kaiba of YGO has green hair but in YGO DM he has brown hair. On the other hand his stepbrother, Noa, has green hair.
    - Kaibaland in the manga has a giant statue of Seto Kaiba in middle of the park.
    - The Battle City ban list limited Monster Reborn card to 1 and forbade Hinotama but permitted 3 copies of the Exodia pieces.
    - Mako Tsunami gave to Joey the Legendary Fisherman and Fortress Whale cards in their duel but Mako did not give him the Ritual Spell Card for summon the whale.
    - Insect Queen and Legendary Fisherman only was used one time in the Joey duel story.
    - Fortress Whale was never used by Joey.
    - Kaiba has a Blue Eyes White Dragon Jet, meanwhile, in the manga, Kaiba only has a Jet with eyes and mouth painted.

Okay, the last one I don't know what that is. I don't get it.

Wasn't it so that the japanese version added some scenes and not english version got them cut out?

I believe it's the other way around. There was one print of the movie which contained every scene portrayed (which was the Japanese version) and during post-production, some of it ended up cut (which was the American version.)

By the way...a lot of the stuff on that list was true...unless you're just talking about cliches...and even then...

I shall search out the episode number in a moment. (possibly the episode when the creation of the items are talked about but as I said I'll check)
Abridged Series quotes are not funny.

Kaiba: It's a glitch in the hologram!

    Tea: I need female friends...

Everyone ever: You don't stand a ghost of a chance!

Yugi: We'll defeat this evil together!

Pharaoh: This MADNESS has to STOP!

I swear to god, those lines are there in every other episode.

1 of the YGO! TAS had a clip taken from the official DUB DVDs.
It was a clip made from some(we know that there are a lot more) of the HEAVILY overused lines up to BC finals in YGO! .

Misconceptions from me if someone didn't mention it.

Yami(I'm talking about the dub after all) has 2 Ra Cards in his deck.

I wonder if I would be able to start the world's biggest Faberg egg collection if I received a Faberg egg for every time a line in the original was changed to include the words 'save', 'the' and 'world'...

Lulz, to quote Dub!Kaiba, "If I had a dollar for every time you said 'fate of the world,' I'd be even richer."

Well, judging by that movie screencap, it looks suspiciously like he does .

Bah, something else from the abridged forums, because I have nothing better to do:

    Konami created Yu Gi Oh

Usually towards the anime (since most of the same people don't know what manga even is).
