Thread: Timeline of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Series

Another fact that could help us is Yusei's age during the Superman reference (Zero Reverse Pod Ejection).

Okay, so that means if the first Zero Reverse took place between 2006 and 2007, then that would mean the start of 5D's is somewhere between the 2023/2024 (if the gap between zero reverse and episode 1 of 5D's is in fact 17 years.)

That's not possible. GX's events were still ongoing during 2007, and the Animation Book confirms that all three series take place in the same world, so the AU theory is also void.

If GX began in spring 2004, it would have concluded in spring 2007.

And besides, that sign was around since the beginning of 5D's (the first OP). It's pretty obvious that at least one year has passed since the series' beginning. I think we can finally consider the 2021 theory Jossed.

Point, but that would leave virtually no time for Neo Domino City's development. There is no way the city would evolve into what we see in Episode 057 of 5D's in mere months. Plus, chances they would need time to discover Momentum and have Dr. Fudo invent the Yusei Particles.

According to a poster Yeager showed, the most plausible date would be 2029 for 5D's' present time, but we are not taking it into consideration as per consensus. (Namely, most dates were shown quite blatantly in previous installments, just throwing a day and a date in is just too vague compared to that.)

The original, pre-Zero Reverse city could have been also named Neo Domino City. (We don't have any proof on the contrary, do we?) Or that's how Yusei was recorded as. Who knows.

Also, I put back the link to the timeline in the first post. Looks like moving the Wiki content will take a good while, and until then, the timeline can be viewed at its original location.

In the 006, his birth place is noticed as unknown and in 116 this is NDC. Perhaps the security completed Yusei's data later in thinking he was born in NDC?

But in the depths of DESPAIR, I must have HOOOOPE!

...

Ooooooookay. Where do I start?

Apart from the fact that the events of 149 have screwed up a lot of things in the story, it's still the thread's job to make something, something out of this mess.

Let's see. Here is the info from 149 for reference:

Spoiler: Spoilering for length.

The subspecies to the Signers. They use the power of the Astral Forms feeding on the vitality of humanity, referred to as Wicked Gods, as their origin.
With a body having life, one will not become a Dark Signer, and so he or she must die once.

Wield Astral Forms referred to as the Earthbound Gods, but it seems they frequently end up feeding on their hearts, instead.
The Signers and Dark Signers wage war roughly every 5,000 years, and in the event that this war is won by the Dark Signers, the Earth will fall to ruin as a result of the power possessed by the Wicked Gods.
The method of battle varies greatly through the ages, and in the 21st century, it was waged using the "Duel Monsters" card game as its medium.

I do not wish to do any in-depth work until at least the Yusei vs. ZONE is concluded in case we get more information, and until these episodes have been subbed for proper understanding.

Now, to take note of the Animation Book's line:

"Duel Monsters" and "GX" are both set in the same world as "5D'S", despite the changing times, let's go over points that should be understood.
We have assumed before that it must mean that everything takes place in one, same timeline. However, it could imply that there could be multiple timelines, but no parallel universe/timeline branches involved with any series (e.g., the "5D's is an AU theory"). Something similar to the timelines of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.
1. The first one is the original timeline, the one in which Zone made himself into Yusei, met Antinomy, Paradox and Aporia, and vowed to change the bad future.
2. The second one is the current, altered timeline, thanks to the efforts of Aporia, Paradox, Antinomy and Zone. The Ark Cradle is summoned from the future into the present, ala Time Crash from Chrono Cross. (Alternately, the timeline is considered changed once again with the Ark Cradle's descent.)
3. The third timeline should be the one with the corrected future, in which mankind isn't wiped out at the hands of the Machine Emperors/Momentum, and the Ark Cradle's descent on Neo Domino City is averted. (Depending on how the next few episodes play out, the Ark Cradle may or may not actually collide with Neo Domino City, or at least causing damage to an extent.)

I'm considering this as a draft of some kind for the time being. I'll probably work on it after the Zone duel / conclusion of 5D's, as well as make a timeline graph to illustrate how it all plays out.

Lastly, since we have further confirmation that 5D's takes in place not that long after GX (with Ushio being the DM Ushio, for one), what shall we do about the Yeager poster incident? IT may not be a concrete evidence, but these blurbs of info from Episode 149 (as well as the WRGP poster) do show us that the in-universe information could be taken as expanded information on the YGOverse.

We have three options on this:
• Still not take the poster into consideration, and stick to the manga's 20XX date.
• List the poster's dates as a possible date, but not as a concrete date, and declare 20XX the definite date.
• Pick one of the poster's dates as the definite date for 5D's.

My thought is to list the possible dates of the poster with 20XX as the definite.

This in a era far far away...

17. Default Re: Timeline of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Series

I think we can assume that:

1996/1997: Duel Monsters (manga only)
2004/2007: GX (anime only)

I have a theory that Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's started in 2029, considering Darkness events at the end of GX, Kaiba think that is time to develop a new way of dueling, so he begans to develop the D-Wheel and then the Synchro Monsters, and also Domino City begans to be re-build so its possible to have Turbo Duels everywhere. At 2012, Zero Reverse occurs, 17 years laters, 2029, 5D's begans. At that time , Ushio and all the DM manga characters should be near 50's, GX characters are like 40's.

2029 is possible but we don't know If It is really correct. I'm intrigued by Kaiba. When he said that?

Everything is just speculation but in general makes senses, remember that Peagasus created Duel Monsters at 1989, GX ended in 2007, 18 passes, a change was needed.

So...

5D's has ended! That means the construction of the timeline can be successfully continued/completed. We've had a few timeskips. However, I'm still waiting to see if Ono spills any info we can use for the timeline, such as the ages of the characters. Ark is working on the Tweet translations.

I have seen others trying to figure out where Zexal fits into the current timeline, but for now, let's keep the timeline focused on DM/GX/5D's to make it easier and simpler. Unless we get confirmation (or have we already?) that Zexal takes place in the same world as the other three series did, I'd like to keep Zexal's timeline separate.

As if they will let us.

As much as we wanted 5D's to be separate and have dignity an let ppl accept it as what it was, they still slapped it in next to DM for really no good reason. To spite us and give us more headaches of all the inconsistency and retconing/adding parts and things that were never there.

I have a small timeline suggestion. In Episode 152, Aki was about to graduate. The Japanese school year ends in spring, right? So maybe that was meant to take place around the same time of year as the episode's air-date.

Also, why did the real-life Japan tragedy have to be at such a convenient date for my personal headcanon timeline?? It makes me feel so guilty...

OOOMPH necropost.

As some of you might be aware at this point, the Janime Wiki, by the current look of things, is toast. Gone. Lost Forever. Archive.org and Google Cache turn up nothing of use. I am currently waiting for the admins to weigh in on the existence of possible backups.

Now, the timeline of this project was also hosted on the Wiki, which means the fruit of our hard work is lost in the ether now. Unfortunately.

However, it appears I copied the source code of the page back in 2010 February, which means our information isn't gone completely. On the ugly side, said snapshot is an early version of the article, which means a lot of things that were filled in are also missing. Still, this is better than nothing.

In the snapshot, DM's date is listed as ambiguous, but in the thread we established it as 1996-1997, so that was the sole thing I edited in the snapshot. Everything else is as it was back then.

Spoiler: Timeline of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Series (2010 February snapshot)

The following is a timeline for the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! series, a chronological order of events occurring in the story.

==Overview of the series' periods==
*Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (as well as Yu-Gi-Oh! R) takes place between 1996 and 1997.
*Yu-Gi-Oh! GX lasts from 2004 to 2007.
**The first year takes place in 2004-2005 and contains the events of season 1.
**The second year takes place in 2005-2006 and contains the events of season 2.
**The third year takes place in 2006-2007 and contains the events of season 3 and 4.
*Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's occurs in 20XX.

==Helpful Notes==
*Dates stated in the series itself or by outside sources are used.
*Events whose dates are approximate are written in italics.
*In several cases, the order of events cannot be determined because it is impossible to begin with, such as events which occurred before the beginning of the story.
*For the sake of simplicity, the manga and the anime timelines for the first series are considered as one. However, the manga's dates take priority over the dates shown in the anime. If dates contradict in both mediums, the manga again takes priority. Filler arcs, such as Doma and KC Grand Prix are omitted due to the plotholes and writing errors they contain regarding the series' overall timeline.
*Explanations for some of the dates are listed in the References section.

==Timeline==
===3000 BC===
*The earliest form of games originate from this period.
===1000 BC===
*The Egyptian kingdom is being attacked by invaders.
*Aknadin deciphers parts of the Ancient Book of Millennium Magic and prepares the ritual for creating the Millennium Items.
*Aknadin departs to Kul Elna with an army to slaughter 99 people for the ritual.
*The Millennium Items are created from the villagers' boiled bodies.
*Aknadin returns to the palace with the creations and gives each Item to their designated holder.
*With the help of the Millennium Items, the invaders are repelled and defeated.
*Egyptian magicians seal monsters in stone tablets and summon them to fight battles in the Pharaoh's court. Their legend is later recorded in the Book of Thoth.
*The Pharaoh seals himself into the Millennium Puzzle along with the Dark Priest (who manages to seal part of himself into the Millennium Ring) and erases his own memories.
===1920===
*October 4 - Sugoroku Muto is born.
===1960===
*Sugoroku visits the Valley of the Kings in order to play the "ultimate game". He obtains the Millennium Puzzle in the Pharaoh's Tomb.
===1966===
*August 12 - Bandit Keith is born.
===1968===
*Cyndia is born.
*October 8 - Pegasus J. Crawford is born.
*November 20 - Mai Kujaku is born.
===1972===
*April 5 - Ishizu Ishtar is born.
===1973===

==References==
*The first series' period can be determined from Kazuki Takahashi mentioning in The Super Long Interview With Kazuki Takahashi-sensei that Sugoroku Muto was forty years old when he went to Egypt to take part in the "ultimate game" and obtain the Millennium Puzzle. According to Battle 279 of the manga, this occurred in 1960. In the Gospel of Truth, Sugoroku is listed as 72 years old in the present day, therefore the series is set in 1992. After Duelist Kingdom, Yugi states that they have advanced a grade in school. With this information in mind, it could be said that the events of the series happened in about a year and a half.
*For GX, dates were occasionally shown in the anime, such as Marufuji Ryo graduating from the Duel Academia in 2004 and Judai Yuki starting his studies in 2004 (Episode 156).
*For 5D's, the date is explicitly shown in Ride 01 of the 5D's manga.
*The characters' birthdays are listed in the Gospel of Truth.
*Yugi, Anzu, Honda, Jonouchi, Kaiba, Ryo, Ryuji are listed as "second year in high school" in the Gospel of Truth. This would make all of them about 16 years old.
*In Vol. 5, Duel 40 of the manga, Mokuba mentions "When Seto-sama was ten and I was five...", making the age difference five years between them. Thus, Mokuba was born in 1981.
*Cyndia's day of birth was never stated, but it is known she died at the age of 17, shortly after Pegasus' 17th birthday. This would make her slightly older than him.
*Cyndia's death happened shortly after Pegasus' birthday. Pegasus stated that "for months he stared at the white canvas of his heart". Again, his birthday is in October, so after a few months of grieving a new year has surely begun.
*Ishizu said that the tragedy of the Ishtars occurred five years before Battle City. If we go by the anime, Pegasus met Ishizu when he intended to seal the God cards in Egypt, at which time she already had the Necklace. Before the tragedy the Necklace was kept in the temple along with the Rod. Therefore Pegasus could've created the God cards five years ago. When he found the Gods' tablet, he also claimed his game would be finally complete. Thus creating and finishing the card game in a span of two years would make sense.

Furthermore, Allana did some summaries of the GX arcs, which I added into the Wiki (albeit after I corrected some of the grammar mistakes and such), but her original posts can be found here:

That's all I could dig up so far, in terms of backing up.

Alright, update - it would seem that the Wiki has been preserved, and will be restored over the weekend! Which is great, great news. That saves us a lot of time, and we get back everything we had on the Wiki so far!

With that in mind, I ought to return to this project and continue working on it, as my hiatus got in the way and ignored the project for a long time. I see there's a fuss regarding the Zexal timeline, though. I guess I'll start with that first...

Is anyone interested in making a timeline for Zexal? From what it seems, its place in the timeline is very vague and ambiguous, so we could keep it separate from DM/GX/5D's until further notice. Or would you rather focus on the DM/GX/5D's timeline first?

Good new for the Wiki! For the timeline, we can complete the DM/GX/5d's timeline first and start Zexal next. Everything in his own time.
